I can totally see where people could get this vibe, but after I completed the game, I saw things a bit differently. I really felt like Fang thought she was obligated to take care of Vanille since she was older, and because of all they went through together becoming l'Cie. I saw their relationship as more of the older sister/younger sister. In some cases, when children are orphaned, one sibling becomes the more dominant one becoming more nurturing, stern, et cetera...All the traits that would be expected from a parent. Does that make sense? Anyway, that's how I saw the whole Fang/Vanille thing after I played the game entirely.

I also want to say that I agree that Final Fantasy/Square-Enix/(soft) has greatly declined over the years, but the games still have a lot of the same general elements to them. I think Square has just become too focused on the visual effects of the game, and are letting some of the other elements fall through the cracks. And I think any time a sequel/prequel/et cetera is attached to an already existing Final Fantasy, it spells immediate doom. I doubt I would ever buy one of the sequels unless it was extremely cheap. They are always terrible and uninteresting.
