Oh there was a need for it. The N64 had something like a 2nd analog. It was actually 4 buttons (called C-Buttons) that were used as a 2nd analog on some 3D/FPS/TPS games.

I used to play a lot of them back in the 64 days. Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Turok 1, 2 & 3, all the Duke Nukem games, Armorines, Doom 64, Shadowman plus a heck of a lot of 3D games that play almost exactly as most of them play now. Including games like Super Mario 64 - I saw no huge difference between it and Sunshine on the Cube in terms of controls. Same goes for Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker.

Thing is, an analog can be replaced with D-buttons. Or with a stylus like you do on the DS.

Gamecube wasn't dual analogue and the C-stick was a mess. Level design back then was pretty two dimensional too.

^ That picture is most likely fake. If I had to put money on it, I'd say that this is closer to what PSP2 will look like:

This is probably fake also, and is basically a Photoshopped PSP Go, but it's a lot sexier than any other mock-ups.

I've heard rumours that it's allegedly almost to the spec of PS3.
            See you in hell.

I almost hope not. The cost of such a handheld monster would mean it sinks like a lead weight. Unless they make it powerful and cheap, of course.

                I agree.

I also read that the screen is going to be bigger and bright as hell. If true, then the battery life on the PSP2 would be even worse than on the 3DS. And thus, not portable at all.

Let's hope those are merely rumors. Sony cannot afford to produce another PSPGo... or maybe they can. I dunno.

EDIT: I was reading up on the OLED display that the PSP2 is suppose to have. It seems that such displays are designed to die off in a few years and thus, forcing the consumer to replace either the display or the whole system. Because they have a significant lifespan that is much shorter then ordinary LCD displays.

That reminds me of the time Shinji Mikami said the PS2 was designed by Sony to break. And that was why the console sold so much. Because users had to replace it every time.

Has no one learned by now not to believe it when companies say "Our new handheld is just as powerful as our most recent console"? It never is, maybe close, but never on par.

I hear the screen is made of papers and they've actually gone one further and included THREE analogue sticks and it won't connect to wifi, but to dialup modems to cut down on the machine's carbon footprint.

                      May not be true.

                        It's real, folks. Just unveiled.

5 inch OLED screen. 3G plus Wifi. Dual ANALOG STICKS(not nubs, raised analog sticks). Front and rear touch pads. Sixaxis capabilities. Front and rear cameras with a microphone. 4x the resolution of the original PSP. Codename: NGP - Next Generation Portable. Due out in Japan this holiday season.

Trailer showing off "near-PS3 quality graphics" -- games shown: UNCHARTED, LBP, Killzone, Resistance, Hot Shots Golf, WOW. Livebloggers shitting their PANTS at how the graphics look.

                        HOLY SHIT, UNCHARTED LIVE DEMO!

                        Ryan Clements:
Game looks really, really nice. Only a few touches less impressive that Uncharted on the PS3.

It's flash memory based if anyones wondering, and it's a touch screen.

Folks, when Drake is running around, the game just looks really amazing. Drake runs through the hjungle and the environment is detailed and lush. Thank goodness for Naughty Dog.

                            Ryan Clements:
Can actually use the touch screen to control Drake,

                                Ryan Clements:
Live Area is like the hub page for a game, where users can get information on different games, and jump right into the PlayStation Store, and other parts of the PS space.

                                Ryan Clements:
It's easy to hop in and out of the game almost instantaenously. Think about how fast you can open and close apps on an iPhone. Same speed here, when launching games.

The price is gonna be horrifying, but I already have more interest in this than I do the 3DS.

EDIT: Jun Takeuchi has just taken the stage. Holy fuckery.

EDIT 2: Nevermind. It's just Monster Hunter.

EDIT 3: Now he's playing Lost Planet 2, a demo he says was made in two weeks. That's encouraging, I think. No new titles but "stay tuned."

EDIT 4: Hideo Kojima just took the stage. MGS4 is shown running on the NGP.

Nothing new, but he teases more news at E3 later this year.

EDIT again: Call of Duty confirmed by Activision rep. Oh my.
