  • Dead Island

^ This might be one of the greatest trailers I've ever seen. Investigation of the Facebook page leads to more...

Log into Facebook to start sharing and connecting with your friends, family, and people you know.

    - first-person melee combat
    - 4-player coop
    - weapon customization
    - set on an open world tropical island
    - RPG elements for character development
    - hordes of gruesome zombies

Sounds like Left 4 Dead with RPG elements...

Dead Island combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customization of a vast array of weapons. All of these gameplay features are presented in a dark story inspired by classic zombie movies with a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to 4 players in co-op mode.

Developed for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

The Facebook page also lists a website, but it doesn't seem to be working for me...
Dead Island 2 is back! A unique formula of horror, dark humor and over the top zombie-slaying. Coming 04.21.2023 to PlayStation, Xbox and Epic Games Store

EDIT: IGN has posted a comprehensive preview

The Royal Palms Resort is perched on the remote island of Banoi in Papua New Guinea. It's a tropical paradise turned tourist magnet, remote and exotic. Not the sort of place you'd expect to find scattered caches of weapons, boxes of grenades, rocket launchers leaning against walls, and mounted machine guns. In an effort to preserve that reality, Techland, the developers of Dead Island, have stripped those handy gaming conventions away, leaving a stark reality in their place.

Rather than run-and-gun their way through a meat maze, players will be forced to scavenge for objects and use them to beat their undead foes into submission. There are precious few firearms scattered around the island (and even less ammo), so the majority of the combat will be intimate. Knives, machetes, bats, broomsticks, pipes – these are your defenses against the horde of infected monsters. It's survival horror with a melee action twist, and it's disgusting.

Publisher Deep Silver and developer Techland recently showed me an early build of Dead Island, and the zombies were horrifying in their varying states of decay. With each blow, their already sloughing flesh fell away in sprays of blood, revealing layers of muscle underneath. The publisher describes Dead Island as dark, twisted and gritty, and the tiny sliver I've seen seems to support those claims. This is not the campy world of Dead Rising.

    ...HYPED.

This game has been in development for years, rumoured cancelled for a long time too.

^ IGN talks about that in their article. It's not canceled, quite obviously.

Guess they found a publisher for the game. Building a new engine from scratch, with a small team no doubt, would take time.

Honestly pleased that this game is not vaporware. I remember the first game images they released the years back and got excited for the sandbox they wanted to create. Sounds like they're not going to fail on that promise. I guess this will be coming out later this year/Q4 2011.

Excellent trailer though. I swear I have a vibe of lost at the begining with the closeup on the eye, and probably this being set on a Island of course. Day one purchase PC for me. I can see me, vass, and Emma playing this together via vent and hamachi, taking names. Bring on the more zombie games I'd say!

I've been following this one for years. I'd kill most people I don't really like already to see it finished. But then, I'd do that anyway.

It looks really good, and a real blast. But as I said, been following it for years. Then again, I was following Rainy Woods and Hydrophobia for years too...the truly awesome games seem to get made eventually*. And zombies are 'in' right now, so...

          * Except 1.5.

This looks amazing. I've been watching it's progress for a couple years now, and what I just saw gave me this feeling that I always get when I see something that will amaze. I'm just hoping that the trailer is more proof of a narrative that is really strong and heart felt than just a great survival horror game. Quite honestly that trailer was simply beautiful, the music, tone and how it all was presented.

My only worry about this game is that this trailer(fucking amazing) has created insurmountable expectations.

The trailer was epic. The game has been around for a while... I'll definetly give this a shot, as TEH ZOMBIEZ are always good.

This trailer from 2008(which shows the release date as 2008, lulz) shows off some snippets of what's mentioned above:

True, but god damn does that tug at your heart strings. I'll wait for the gameplay footage and stuff, but I'll nonetheless keep a close watch.

Holy shit does that intro look good or what? A few of those scenes almost looked like real people. This could turn out to be an awesome game.

Never heard of this game until I opened this thread.
Loved that trailer in the first post.
I liked the over the top nature of Dead Rising 2's combat, but if this game is challenging and fun, and more about survival rather than mowing down hoardes of enemies, then I might just pick this up.

                              Looks very promising.
