Erm...no i'm not. I'm saying the intrusion could've happened that full twelve days ago but it's taken Sony this long to inform people themselves.

Nowhere in my post did i make anything close to an assumption that people have been able to dip in and out of the network data for the whole twelve days.

Though when you make that point, what is to have stopped the hackers from taking that information and having it locally for twelve days without needing to be on the network?

    • Data was already stolen when they infiltrated the PSN servers and then Sony soon shutdown the servers to stop any further data being uploaded to whatever location the hacker was at. The damage was already done.

      • ^^^^^ The irony of that statement Gene is that realistically that is what happens. Because people learn from mistakes generally to stop it from happening again. The more serious the original issue the more likely they are going to make sure it never ever happens again because of that exact point. This is fairly massive, I kinda believe Sony's never ever wanting to see this happen again for that very reason. It's the old fool me once, fool me twice concept as far as the public goes, but on the flip side Sony will have to battle to keep customers for the future. This is not an excuse on their behalf, fuck em, but it's realistic to me.

I personally feel sorry for the indie devs who survive on the purchases on the network, and secondly people who pay for Plus because they're really the people possibly affected in a real money value here. For the rest of you who have used this FREE service (and this includes me) we need to suck it up.

Before people start bitching back at me about this, while I agree with Alexia and others on the idea if you don't trust the future of the service, don't use it, anyone on the PSN actually signed an agreement that does have a disclaimer about potential risks of the information you give. If you agree to save your card on the account, there is a link that takes you to the CC part of that same agreement which also outlines possible risks. We all agreed to it, and tough shit... fuck it actually happened.

Call me a realist about this, but theft is possible with online data at any time. Your credit card details, passwords, and any personal info is at risk of theft. And the simple answer is if you can't handle this as a possibility then you just don't use those services.

It's like posting on here. If someone in charge here pissed off some serious hackers on a forums, they could just as possibly hack into the server and break open everyone's user data and start posting up passwords. It's not likely, but it's possible. We put a lot of trust into the security of the hosting providers, just as much as we would in Sony for the PSN, but still doesn't change the chance of it happening. No "but Sony is massive" and the like will change that. People are just more hurt because it seemed such a big company would be better at it or they trusted it more, but clearly it doesn't make a difference.

Exactly. Just because Sony closed the network down doesn't mean the hackers won't be able to access whatever they had the time to process.

Plus let's not forget, the email states BETWEEN April 17th and 19th, that's 72 hours where the data could've readily available to whoever broke in.

          • Sony will be hurt by this but they'll recover. Trust has been violated and it'll take a long time before people will be able to place trust in Sony again after this, but at least something is being done about it.

Also Stu, during the timeframe of those twelve days we would have seen that information turn up on the internet at some point. Yet we haven't, I do however wonder how long it will take before we see it crop up.
            See you in hell.

Why would we see it turn up? I assume you're talking about the stolen data (personal information, emails, passwords and bank card info?) - in which case, what's to stop it being readily available on the blackmarket to the highest bidder?

Would see somewhat unrealistic to assume this person has gone to the trouble of hacking into Sony only to release their efforts online for nothing.

The credit card information is encrypted and it wont be long until the hacker(s) will find the right encryption method, or sell it on to another party so they can open the data. The hacker's probably smart and keeping it quiet. But clearly we're experts and know what really is going on in the background here

                  • Yeah to be fair, if Sony had any sense they'd have us on-board as consultants. The idiots. Just another mistake they've made!

Clearly Mr Spencer must be from Sony as he's an expert on network security and server management, as he know's what is going on I'd hire him to inspect my Pro curve 3 layer switches and server protocols for any security breaches!

EDIT: Why not, here's my works hub server (and the main forest root switch that all Fibre connections lead to from here and the other network switches across the school) I've just taken

Also here's how the switch console would look like. It shows some simple security measures but I doubt Sony would be using HP (one of the biggest networking providers out there but not the best) but you can get a fair idea how they would soon realise what would be going on. The hacker would of tried to trick the switch's security so their IP wouldn't be picked up easily.

                      • And here we go! Take this with a grain of salt for now but someone over at Gaf as put this up;

Ok, I guess this is important so please mods move it in the op if you must:
I just received an SMS about my credit card (the one linked to PSN) being blocked.
I phoned my bank service number and they confirmed me that it was indeed Sony Network fault because they've been receiving a lot of phone calls about cash flow not being authorized in the last 4 days. Today finally Sony admitted it's because the hacker managed to clone several credit cards (including mine).
The card now has been blocked and a new one has been emitted.
The bank operator told me about Sony admittance on the matter

Is it wrong that I love server rooms ? I just love all the rackmounts and the endless humming power haha and all the network cables woo and flashing lights...

                          Ok ill stop now

P.S. I envy where you work.

                          • @Spencer, I understand and respect the point and humility of your statement.
I just hope Sony feels the same way.

I agree with Rombie as well. In order to improve security beyond projected/unnecessary
costs the current security must have failed and in sony's case this seems pretty much
the case and to redeem themselves they are taking the necessary actions for this to
never happen again like any other corporation would do at a time of crisis such as this.

There must be an incident, which becomes the catalyst for the development of change.

Identity theft can happen at any time to any given company...we shouldn't be afraid
and distrustful for the rest of our lives, as long as we know the full picture and keep a
close eye on things everything should be alright...in time.

                            ------------------

                            In other news. xD
