I didn't quite like SoulCalibur IV as much as I had hoped.
It was a disappointment. Hopefully this holds up the name,
    However, I doubt it.

As we reported yesterday, Sophitia's children will play a central role in the story -- specifically her son Patroklos. Soul Calibur V will take place 17 years after Soul Calibur IV and represents a "generational shift" in the series
Sounds like new shitty throwaway characters are inbound.

Old favorites like Siegfried will also return, but will have aged significantly.
He'll still look like a god damn pretty boy I bet, it would be good if he didn't. Hah, Cervantes never ages. The bastard's immortal.

Now that they are taking the series further into the future, it seems to me
more like the old characters are going to be throwaway characters in each
entry and the new ones are here to stay.

....somewhat, I feel like this might be the fresh start it needs.

They need to keep Cervantes though, the bastard will never die.

                Cervantes was my main.

He is the iconic ghost pirate, long before Johnny Depp was ever a pirate.

They need to throw away any characters post SCII.

I doubt they'll throw him away in the storyline, after all, he's ageless.
I believe Maxi is ageless too because of the influence of Soul Edge
within him...I forgot what it is that makes him ageless.

I can see characters like Sophitia retiring from the series and her son
taking over in her place as a Sword and Shield male user.

She'll probably be featured as an extra character like Hwang and Li-long,
but I can see Lizardman and Cassandra staying for a couple more years
                  in the story.
