WipEout HD - Are you ready?

Calling all pilots!

Seeing as it's one of the free games currently available to download as part of the 'Welcome Back' customer appreciation programme on the PSN, I'd like to take this ideal opportunity to renew people's interest and encourage you to try WipEout HD. I've been a huge fan of the series since 1996 and it's pretty much the only racing game I like. My hope here is to convince those of you who have never played a WipEout game to give it a shot.

I'd like to arrange a tournament at some point if there any willing participants, so far there are about three or four people who I have convinced to get involved - THIA's very own Kaneco, valentinesdead and GuardhouseMusic (I think he's in on it), but it would be fantastic to get a full house of eight. There's about four or five slots available so if anyone has the game or is still considering what to choose for their free game, then feel free to post in this topic.

In my opinion it's one of the better games available via the scheme and a decent exclusive, not only do you get the original game in its entirely but also the Fury expansion too which includes the Eliminator and Detonator game modes, both a hell of a lot of fun. If there's anyone here considering buying the Vita, you might also like to know that the upcoming WipEout 2048 will be compatible with WipEout HD, so you can race online with people from both games.

Sure thing, I've been playing with Kaneco and valentinesdead and both of them are content with the Rapier speed class. I don't think they're quite ready for Phantom just yet. I'll see if I can arrange something later on as tournaments are more fun when you've got more players.

What one is rapier? Been long time since I played this, before Fury even released I think.

Rapier is the speed just below Phantom. Fast but manageable.

I'm with Smiley on this, little bit of practice as I haven't done WipEout for quite some time since getting HD/Fury.

Did they break the game with the Fury expansion? The game now has horrible, constant screen tearing, even on Venom (slowest) speed. This didn't exist in vanilla Wipeout HD, and Fury is even ruining the old tracks with it.

I've not encountered such issues myself.

I spent months trying to get that trophy and you get it within a week or so of picking up the game.

Haha, I've had the game since release and have spent many hours trying for it. Fury is the only new part for me. I dunno why I got it so quick now, took 108 laps of trying, so 40-50 minutes or so.

I was racing my old ghost from years back and early in the lap it pulls of some unbelievable triple barrel roll crap that I have no idea how I done, I was only able to beat it by perfecting the later half of the lap (which was poor on the old ghost), if I could somehow combine the old ghost first half (which I never will replicate) with my current second half I could probably beat Zico by a full second if not more.

...but screw trying that.

I'll probably have another shot at it but it's one of those trophies that involves a lot of luck, I'm sure I'll get it at some point. Looking back now I'm amazed that I managed to get the Airbraker trophy where you had to reach Zone 50 using only airbrakes. Been trying to get Zone Zeus but so far I've been only able to get to around 60 or so, close but not close enough.

Once I figure out what to do and get the barrel rolls down I should be good for the Beat Zico trophy.

But yeah, had WipEout HD since release. The Fury expansion is new to me, pretty much the only reason I chose it as a free game was for the free Fury expansion.

One of the Fury maps looks a lot easier for zone mode, very tame bends. Not sure what my zone record is since I shut the game down, I have the zone zeus trophy though.
