  • What are your thoughts on Dead Space?

I actually loved the games, especally Isaak. Only thing that really bothered me was the fact you do everything while the characters ordering you around did nothing.
I think it was a creepy enough game, and it actually managed to scare me in a few places, which doesn't happen often. Plus, survival/horror mixed with science fiction? Yay!

Dead Space is cool, I wasn't too fond of the first one though because after 1 playthrough theres no replay value. Both games arn't scary, just creepy and after about 3 chapters is not creepy at all, you've seen all the cheap scares it trys to get out of you.

Also, I wont buy another DS collector edition again. Life size replica Plasma Cutter my ass.

I have a heart condition so it's best that I don't play games like Dead Space too much, lucky for me Resident Evil is about as scary as Kirby's Dreamland these days. I really enjoyed Dead Space 1. I bought it, sold it, bought it again-you guessed it, sold it again. It's somewhat similar to my love for Silent Hill 2, in a sense that I love it(not nearly as much as the SH series), but once I beat it a few times I never feel the need to revisit that depressing, heart attack inducing atmosphere again.

For me Dead Space is a HAQ game (hit it and quit it).

Sorry Isaac, I still have your toy

I adore Dead Space. It does things that Resident Evil really should be doing, and doing them well. It has it's share of flaws, of course. The occasional plothole or game glitch, but show me a game that doesn't. And I find it scary. Creepy scary and, 'Shit, it's creeped up behind and is gonna reap my ass from behind!' panic mode.

It isn't a game with much replay value, though, it must be said. I beat Dead Space one twice - once when I got, once when I got Dead Space 2. I suspect the next time I'll play them is when Dead Space 3 shows up.

Good game. Great atmosphere, decent combat and clunky controls.

Agreed. This was probably the worst collector's edition I've ever bought (Well, looking back on it, it is actually the only collector's edition of a video game I've gotten...BUT STILL!). There was virtually nothing of interest in there aside from the soundtrack, which I never did listen to, but like the idea of owning it. Plus, if I remember right, my plasma cutter doesn't even work properly.

As for Dead Space itself, it is probably one of my most loved series. I love the creepiness of the atmosphere, the whispers were awesome in the first game, and I like how the game feels like a realistic version of space colonies. The weapons are believable (Isaac isn't using lasers or thermal detonators).

I definitely preferred the first game to the second. A comparison comes to mind of Resident Evil 1 versus Resident Evil 2. In the first Resident Evil, the space is a lot more confined as you're pretty much just exploring a large house. Resident Evil 2 opens the map a bit more and we're walking around a city and going into sewers. The more confined games (RE1/DS) are far scarier.

I will agree that Dead Space really has no replay value. Pretty much once you've beaten it, it's done. Even playing on Impossible mode isn't much of a challenge once you get the hang of it.

Would you agree that the newer Resident Evils are R.P.B.'s as well? I can't see much difference between Dead Space and Resident Evil 4/5. The puzzles are minimal, the games are action-based, and after a while it does become the same thing.

...Or are you referring from more of a story standpoint?

Dead Space recycles the same few scares too often, you constantly expect it and most of the time it happens, it very quickly loses impact. I've said it elsewhere but play the demo over and over for 8 hours and you've pretty much experienced 90% of what Dead Space has to offer.

The story is predictable also, and the motivation for most of the game is "Engines broke, go get a part and take it to fix them" followed by "Air filtration is broke, go grab a part and take it to where fix it" followed by "Guns are broke, go connect some power and fix them" and so on.

Too much of game is doing the same thing and experiencing the same few scare attempts over and over. There is a little variety in the later chapters but not much. Same goes for environements, same thing everywhere, even the planet looks like the inside of the ship.

Dead Space 2 I cannot even remember what you're trying to do for most of the game (escape I gather, just unsure how specifically), if it was fun I'd remember or if was really boring I would remember, so I guess it was just bland. Gameplay suffered same as the first with same scare attempts recycled too often and too samey enviroments. Then it repeats DS1 enviroments incase we didn't get enough of them in DS1 and Extraction.

I guess that is a problem with it, recycle the same scares or just have you walk about for long periods of nothing so they chose the 'give the player something to do' option.

I do not think RE5 suffered the same problem, it changed environments from town to mines to canyons to marshes to caves to riverboats to ancient cities to labs to a tanker. It mixed up the enemy types several times also beteen town majini, tribals, gun weilding enemies, lickers, mini-bosses not to mention several unique full boss fights.

Despite Capcom giving away so much of RE5s plot in trailers no, I honestly did not see the volcano showdown happening. I probably enjoyed the dialogue a lot more, much more of it, wasn't so serious like Dead Space and Chris isn't a mute.

RE4 castles and the island I think dragged on well beyond their welcome though, as did the constant finding and losing of Ashley.

I actually JUST played through Dead Space 1 and I was pretty satisfied. I will admit the fetch quests got a little irritating, but the story had me fairly interested once I figured out what was going on. I'll probably play again just because I actually know what's going on now XD. I think the problem I have with Sci-Fi Space genre is that, because it's in a future setting, they have to introduce a whole bunch of new terms and it's a bit confusing for me. I am admittedly not the brightest bulb. =|

I watched the prequel movie half way through and so when I started playing again I recognized some terms and it started to make more sense. I'm playing Extraction right now, and will make it to DS2 Friday 8D

I don't care what anyone says, Extraction was how to do a light gun shooter.

                          Capcom, take note.

I have to agree, though I really liked Darkside, Extraction has been adapting ALLOT of the game play aspects straight from Dead Space. It feels very much like a Dead Space game rather than a Rail Shooter adaption.

I'm not sure how RE could have improved it theirs...more branching paths would have been swell though. I would have loved to have Darkside utilize branching paths to impact whether it'd follow ClareA/LeonB or LeonA/ClaireB storyline.
