  • Steam Hacked Now?

    http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/ - or for the lazy;

Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

    Gabe.
Not as serious as the PS3 network fiasco, but still surprising. Still, it's good of them to tell us, unlike with Sony where they didn't mention any risk for...what? A week or two?

Of course, I assume some folks are now going to leave Steam and never return, as they said they would after the Sony screw up...since Steam can't keep your data any safer.

Kinda gutted though. I just started using Steam...

I'm still with Sony and Steam. It's just another rude awakening to how many sites have your personal information and how they can be at risk for being hacked and having said info potentially leaked out.

I'll take the necessary steps and keep an eye on my account.

Yeah, I kept my Sony account and will keep my Steam one. I'm just amused...I remember a lot of yelling and being angry at Sony, although the only thing they really did wrong was not tell everyone that it had happened as soon as they suspected. But I can't fault them for being hacked - various governments get hacked fairly often, and if they can't keep there system perfect then how much chance does a private company?

When will they learn to keep Gabe Newell away from a networked PC, the n00b.

Oh for fuck's sake. How many times is it going to happen this year?

I was glad that with the PSN hacking, that I had already removed my card details because my transactions weren't going through properly (despite having already spoken with my bank who said that there were fund requests coming online and then were being canceled from the requesting end i.e. coming from my attempts to purchase stuff on the PSN so I kept having money put aside until those transactions eventually were completely removed from my account despite that there shouldn't have been an issue in the first place).

But to have other sites, game services and now Steam get hacked too this year is just driving me nuts.

But despite this, I'll still be using Steam regardless. *Sighs*

People who do this kind of shit are why we can't have nice things.

And it took anyone at Steam just as long as Sony did. Obviously you need to investigate and decide the best course of action, seems like that time frame is about 6 days.

I'm not sure if I agree or disagree that it's worse/better than Sony's. While Sony had millions more accounts accessed, the average user on there probably didn't have a credit card attached because it's not a required element to get things off the PSN. Steam had less accounts accessed, but I would be willing to say 80-90% of them had some card details attached due to the pay-to-play-games platform it is. As far as pure information stolen though, well that's clearly a worse thing for the Sony hack.

I said it when the Sony one happened, and I don't need to say it again really (Smiley already did above) but it really could be anywhere and you should be aware when using any services.

See I never worried with Soy, I never had card info...with Steam x_x I took my info off record(I think I did it right?) and changed my password but this is still stressing to say the least. Just WTF, assholes....

I never actually gave Steam my card info, prefering to use PayPal...because I'm lazy. Has laziness saved my ass?
