  • Go play/buy AMY [Out now - PSN/XBLA | See you later - PC]

    Thread title says it all.

Buy AMY. Once you've done that and played it for a few hours, then we can talk about whether or not you and/or the market is there to actually support some old school survival horror. You know, the type of stuff people have bitched and moaned about not getting from Dead Space 1-2 and Resident Evil 4-5. So here's everything you've been missing for quite some time; Time to suck it up, be a man and put your money where your mouth is.

(PS: I love AMY. It's f-ing brilliant. Despite its shortcomings and somewhat wonky technical issues. And, oh, I dunno how much damage you take on EASY/NORMAL, but I think it's fair that almost anything dangerous rapes your face off on HARD. So play it on HARD. KTHX.)

Just got back with a PSN card to go and buy it Carn.

If it'll stop me from talking about Mass Effect to Smiley (he must be fed up with hearing it by now) then I'm going straight to download it as I type this. While it's downloading, probably some more L.A. Noire.

Once I've gotten a couple of hours in, I'll be back here to post.

Excellent! Will be looking forward to that. Anyway, need some ZZZs now.

(By the way, I know I've probably forgotten something or whatever we may have been talking about in PMs last year; fetch me a reminder and I'll see if I can do something about that soon-ishly. Once I'm done being all lovely dovely or something and settling in with my new occupations.)

I played some of the demo. It was ok but this game has one of my biggest pet peeves of all time in video games -- blatantly disappearing enemies. Tons of games do this but they just hide it very well but others like this one don't. It works for some things great like vampires and it works for RE5, but c'mon.. if the enemies are what I think they are, they would not just fall apart/disintegrate like that, especially when hit with a stick or pipe.

I understand technical issues, but to video game programmers: for the love of god, make the enemies disappear after you turn your character around and leave the area or something so I don't see it happen. It may sound like something little but to me it makes a huge difference. It takes me 100% out of a game every time because it's unrealistic within the game's world.

Sorry for the rant there, I really wanted to like this game more but I think after seeing the 4th or 5th enemy disappear that i'm done with this game.

Enetirnel, how is L.A. Noire? I have a copy of the complete edition and haven't played it yet. I'm a fan of Deus Ex (that's probably obvious lol), Indigo Prohecy, Sentient, Mass effect, etc. type ganes and LAN looks similar. Do you think i'll like it?

ANDER'S TAPES, if they haven't been sent back... Well. That and I was needing to ask you about one of the tapes that you converted. I'll send you a reminder later.

The game is fun so far, played a little bit (the opening part). Enjoy that the controls and mechanics are a somewhat cross between Demento (the whole stamina, sound attracting enemies, the dodging and stealth a bit too).

The weapon mechanics and the contamination reminds me a bit of Outbreak, but I enjoyed Outbreak (I would have more-so had there not being that goddamn virus gague that ruined the fun of it due to the time limitations).

I'm a bit tired of the enemy disappearing stuff, but I do at least like how they kind of explode before vanishing. I can live with that, I did with Demento so that's fine by me. Carn, are there any sort of enemies that will come back repeatedly... Like stalker-types?

Just asking as I haven't played too much into it yet.

I was playing it on hard, like how you essentially get hit once, have to heal or get hit twice and you're essentially dead. Looking forward to playing more of it.

What was mainly getting me was this stuttering on the framerate, not sure if anyone else has had this - so it would be nice to hear if it's common or uncommon at this point.

(As for L.A. Noire, it reminds me a bit more as to how Fahrenheit/Indigo Propehcy was done but for the most part, it's about finding clues to back up the conversation choices and I've had a few too many gunfights so far in contrast to simply running after the suspects. I'm also a little bit tired of the car mechanics so you'll need to keep on a suspect until you've stopped them OR they crash into some sort of obstacle or pre-planned chase end point - I'd play a little bit of it and see if you like it, I can't really be the judge of it for you as the ones you've mentioned all have differences - such as Mass Effect containing RPG elements and the like... I might just be complaining because I don't really do gunfights or car chases often as I tend to play a lot of RPGs when not playing survival horror games like Clock Tower or Demento/Haunting Ground).

I heard it was delayed for psn, but now you got me thinking that I'll have to check it out. Read a bad review. Hope I'm proven wrong when I play it.

I'm probably being a bit harsh on the game, I mean it is a budget title. I'll probably eventually try it again sometime. I think part of it also has to do with frustration. One of my cats pulled the power on my 360 right in the middle of playing and there is no saving your game in the demo.

Thanks for the info on Noire. I'll probably like it, although it sounds more like Indigo meets GTA as opposed to meets Mass effect. I'm not a huge fan of the GTA's myself, although I do enjoy the Saints row games and The godfather. About the stuttering problem, you're not alone. Same here. The game behaves as if it's constantly trying to stream load from a disc, even though there isn't a disc in use. It's strange. I was wondering if it was just a bug in the demo before you mentioned it.

The game has checkpoints in the chapters, but if you quit the game you have to start over from the start of the current chapter.

Ah. Right. Anders' got his tapes back (sans one, seems like I by accident left the one there were two different variations of in my studio when I sent him the package.)
PM me up about that other stuff, I've actually still got a lot of re-encoding and uploading to do for various stuff.

I'll get back to you on the other stuff later (at work right now)

Regarding this; the framerate gets better as you progress through the game, strangely enough. (Though, the infection effect, split-screen sequences and various shaders for mirrors, smokes and so forth does kill the performance quite a bit at times.)

Game belongs in the PS1/early PS2 era. Visuals and voicework are awful, not making checkpoints saves just makes for a really bad annoyance and doesn't add any challenge.

Fans of really old survival horror games will find reasons to enjoy it though.

Visuals are NOT that bad, early PS2 era visuals are something I'd classify C:V X as.

Voice overs in the game are NOT that bad, considering other games out may not even have voice acting in it (Folklore as one such title) and quite honestly, I like the lack of checkpoints. It means I have to actually think instead of rushing in and attacking shit.

Considering I'm in the middle of recapturing footage from the old Clock Tower titles, I certainly wouldn't put AMY into the same group of older, outdated titles fairly infamous for their voice acting too.

(And I feel that it's reasonable to mention CT, for them being another stamina and stealth based survival horror lot).

I don't mind the lack of checkpoints, but the problem is they are not save points. If you die you go back to a checkpoint, fine, but why do I have to keep playing and finish the entire level just to not need completely restart the level next time I play?

It traps you playing the game for lengthy sessions, is why I haven't played it since I lost all my progress on the first level. Is especially bad due to the trial and error nature of the game which means you could be playing it for a very lengthy timeframe.

I've only played the demo since it's release and I thought it was alright. The VOs in the game aren't the greatest at all, but I can get by that. The combat feels a bit too clunky for a current-gen game and by what you guys say, it does feel like it's stuck in the last-gen; not saying that as a bad thing though. I'm a bit disappointed to see all the bad reviews, but I guess it's because expectations were really high for this one. I'm still gonna buy it, just don't know when because I've got a crap-ton of games to still finish since the holidays >.<.
