  • Resident Evil vs. Resident Evil w/Dinosaurs vs. Resident Evil w/Samurai

(sort of in honor of the fact I'll soon be restarting the Onimusha series. Can't wait to play all the games at last)

This is pretty much the general way to sum up Dino Crisis and Onimusha. (although the description kinda falls apart for the latter since, from what I hear, it changes a lot after Warlords. I only ever played Warlords so...)

My question to you all is, how do yo compare the two franchises to their papa? Do you think they're better than any RE game? Worse? In the middle somewhere?

For me, Dino Crisis 1 was somewhere down there with RE 3 and Code Veronica. Oh sure it had some nice scare moments and the premise was alright but the characters were painfully bland and the game was hampered by some really dumb gameplay decisions. (respawning enemies, re-using the same 2 or 3 puzzles over and over throughout the entire game, no real boss fights)

Warlords is...well, I love it. Sure the foundation and execution of the story is rather silly but there's a wonderfully dark and morbid air as well. I can honestly say I liked the plot, in spite of or partly because of, Narm Charm. Reading the files and learning about the Demons/Genma was interesting to me. Only RE game with a truly interesting story for me was RE 1 and RE 2.

In terms of protagonists, I also think Sam is better than most RE heroes and definitely prefer him to what I saw of Regina in DC1.

The gameplay was pretty fun as well, some nice hack-and-slash with cool Elemental Powers. Nothing too amazing but about as good as any RE game in my opinion.

Where I think Warlords stands above every RE game by a considerable margin is the music.

So that's my little opinion. And you all?

BH3 was fuck-awesome so that's a good place for Dino Crisis to be.

Also, enemies do not respawn, the game has more varied puzzles than most BH games, and the boss fights are all with T-Rex and all are awesome. The game is not about action to begin with, why would there be "real" boss fights where you wittle down an enemy's health?

"More varied" is not a good thing when overused. I do not feel like playing Memory over and over and over and over again.

And are you saying RE1 and REmake are not about horror? I'm pretty sure they had boss fights too. So did Silent Hil and neither Resident Evil or Dino Crisis are in its legue when it comes to the horror element IMO.

Indeed, good thing none of the puzzles are over-used. The only ones which appear more than twice are the DDR door codes, and each one has a different formula to working them out, making them almost completely different puzzles. Your use of "overused" does not fit.

Didn't say anything about BH1 not having horror. However, I will say that DC1 is not a horror game. Not even "Survival Horror". It is "Survival Panic", a completely different genre, although similar in style. You're not meant to be able to defend yourself as well as you can in the BIOHAZARD series. Your enemies are bigger, stronger and deadlier than you or your weapons and this was completely intentional. You have less ammunition in DC1 than you do in a single BH game, and the handgun is worthless.

Your descriptions "Resident Evil w/ dinosaurs/samurais" are stupid to begin with. Both the Dino Crisis and Onimusha series are far removed from the BIOHAZARD formula, despite being derived from it.

This is news to me. I only played DC1 once or twice, but I always remembered those damned raptors coming back even when I "killed" them with the most powerful of weapons.
          Mass production? Ridiculous!

Some Dino respawn in DC1, but only when you are trying to reach an area, like fleeing from an area. It's been a while since I played though. Also puzzles do repeat such as the password puzzles, but it's not that bad. They may repeat but it's not always the same code for everyone.

In DC2 they always respawn! Hell I hate the fricking blue super Raptors that you find on hard mode! Too fricking had man! Who remembers those? It took me like 15-20 shotgun shells to kill one... god I wanna play DC2 again.
