  • Arcade Fightsticks Discussion

I felt like starting a discussion on Arcade fightsticks.

Over the past few months/years I've been taking into consideration into learning how to play with a fightstick controller and kinda stick to it, even outside the Arcades (that barely exist now).

Picked up two Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (Wii) Fightsticks on ebay for about $25 a pop about 8 months ago and bought a Wii Mayflash USB Adapter that lets you play on PS3 & PC, I had a great experience playing with them and got better with practice.

3 days ago, I finally decided to mod one of them on my own...and what I have gathered, it's quite simple and easy. Did all my research and ordered a MC Cthulu Multi-Console PCB (Motherboard) and a few other parts to turn into an universal fightstick, I'll be buying the buttons/stick in the oncoming weeks (already picked them out). I'll be Vinyl Spray painting the TvC Fightstick black and I already made a rough draft of the faceplate design I'll be using.

I found this guide to be quite inspiring, especially how it thoroughly gives you an insight on what the inside looks like for a Madcatz Standard Edition Fightstick.

I'll be giving an update of my work and pics of it finalized...coming soon!

Now, feel free to share your story/experience and/or your future plans all 'Arcade Fightstick' (tournaments, modding projects, etc) related.

Have 2 Street Fighter IV Tournament edition stocks - These are great.
Have 2 custom made sticks which were also great...but these stopped working when Sony pulled that dick move and disabled a bunch of PS3 accesories in a firmware update.
Hori Fightstick 3 - This was bought just so my boyfriend and I didn't argue over the (at the time) single SFIV TE stick. Pretty crap to be honest, and we still argued.
Tekken 6 official stick - this one for 360, the only 360 stick we have but we barely play it so not buying more. This is actually great for te price e got it at (£35 with the Tekken 6 game) but it is wireless and requires batteries which is a pain in the ass.

Oh just so you know, some of those Motherboards are firmware upgradeable so you should look into opening them and see if they're upgradable.

The PCB I'm getting is upgradable and widely used by the gaming community, no soldering required...until you wish to add Retro & X360 compatibility (but rather practical and not too much of a hassle).

EDIT: If they're not upgradable, you can always get another PCB installed like the MC Cthulu...you already have everything you need like the case, buttons, stick, etc. Don't let those custom Fightsticks go to waste.

I thought about upgrading the PCB but I am not sure what one it even is, I didn't make them myself and had them made by someone and just asked for certain design on it. I am not in contact with this person anymore.

          Update!

I just finished my Fightstick about 2 weeks ago, and I can say I'm proud. =D

It's compatible with PS3, X360 & PC. All I have to do is add compatibility for older systems (AKA 'Legacy Systems')

It came out a little rough so I have to sand paper the extra paint and maybe reprint/get a cleaner cut on the artwork.

The light reflects on the lami-label paper thus explains the glare in the pics I took from my phone.

I'm not really a fightstick user but I'm really curious.

I got one a while ago just to see how I would play SFxT...
It's just, when I play I tend to be a bit... aggressive... >_>

Like, do people usually play with heavier fight sticks or kinda like... add weights to it or something?
Or do you just need like a crap ton of self control?

Long story short I managed to get a full refund since I sent it back within a week. Mainly because after the first 10 seconds of a match the controller would've shifted positions on the table like 20 times...

Light sticks suck, though you could of added a bit of rubber to stop sliding.

How much does a good stick weigh?

Also it had rubber on the bottom. Didn't help.

Weighs enough that it doesn't move about during use.
