Already confirmed the Co-Op is optional, thank goodness.

As I recall Nathan was acting oddly before the end of the game. Maybe he did kill himself and turned after that? It was a plot point that was always lacking...

I'm assuming Nate just died and turned into a necromorph while lexine and gab were piloting the shuttle. As for the co-op being optional, phew! What a relief. Loving the way the pack looks now and can't wait to see what other type of necromorphs are in the game. I read on IGN about a giant worm Necro? Can we expect boss battles like the Hive mind from Dead Space 1? God I hope so.

What I find funny is, Resident Evil 5 had this co-op and was not liked, but it sold so many units, and EA seem to throw away what made Dead Space a better horror experience for the sake of that pie Capcom have with RE. Well...at least Resident Evil had it for more then two games. Wait for the good Japanese developers to explore new things and then just follow it ahhh gotta love it!

Infact lets look past the fact that Resident Evil 4 had such a success that over the shoulder became so big, but Dead Space 3 having enemies with guns? it's like taking ideas that Capcom did that most gamers do not even like in their horror, amazing really.

I remember a Dead Space dev saying loads more people played DS1 than bought it, I guess people renting or buying used. So they tried to extend DS2 lifespan with multiplayer, only it didn't really work well and was very repetitive. Now with DS3 they hoping co-op which is pretty well loved this gen will stop people selling their games for longer, and no doubt this need an online pass to stuff up rentals.

Hmm I didn't think of that, I'm renting this. Oh well, hopes in the slim chance it has splitscreen.

Co-op being optional: as in playing with an AI or like it's a separate mode or the game changes when another player interacts as Carver?

Separate Modes - if you play on your own, there's no AI partner. The character doesn't even appear, as I understand it.

Yes Carver does appear in solo mode. If you play alone Carver will has a similiar role to Elle in DS2. But if you play in co-op mode, story will change and Carver will be Isiacs guide through the whole game.

People can turn into necromorphs only in death by either 'infectors' or by having contact/certain degree of exposure with the 'Marker' (I think)...in Extraction he could have contracted the virus by having been stabbed by the huge crab-like necromorph and when he died in his sleep he could have just turned into a necromorph. It's the only reasonable explanation as to why he isn't mentioned, aside from the fact DS2 takes place 3 years after DS1, and why there was a necromorph in the space shuttle. Nathan was, after all, the only surviving human directly wounded by a necromorph.

Why mention him, it's been 3 years...Lexine & Gabe got married, are expecting a baby, and are moving on with their lives in DS2's storyline.

It's what makes the most sense.

Yup its not THAT hard to buy really is it. Could have guessed this without confirmation from Steve Papoutsis. There was 3 left on the ship they escape in. Someone is infected and shot and it isnt Lexine. Gabe is alive in Severed.....Do the math.

Except he is doing fine and extremely unlikely to die. He passes over an offer to use a medkit and prefers wait to reach the sprawl, that is how well he was. Plus the game ends in Gabes perspective, it is completely disjointed with the rest of the game to suddenly switch characters perspective into a necromorph Nate for the ending. A necromorph infection does not kill someone either, it only affects the dead.

Another thing is the Necromorph shadow is fully developed, something not possible since Nate had lost a part of his arm, is no way the slasher could be fuly developed. Not to mention it is meant to take days for a dead body to change without aid of an infector.

It's unsusual, but the Hunter was created by planting tissue from the bio-mass growing in the ship directly into a living brain. It was similar to a Slasher, and could re-grow lost limbs, so that might be somewhat like what happened here.

Mostly it's just a bit messy.

I took the arm part into account, but when necromorphs are formed they grow limbs and their body go complete skeletal re-arrangement...the transformation could have just healed the severed arm.

The problem with Nate is that he wasn't well (severed-arm...and you're fine? REALLY!?), and should have taken that medkit when he had the chance...the moment he died is the moment he could have underwent the change...he was infected after all. Infectors are not the only way of infecting, they are human torsos that became Injectors which eased & sped-up the process of convergence.

Also, I think it was already made clear that the transformation process could be in a matter of hours. Once, the body starts changing its physical structure the process is almost instantaneous. If Infectors are the only way of infecting individuals, then it wouldn't explain how they came to be in the first place...since they're, after all, Human torsos. The reason why you see Infectors' victims turning into slashers only is due to pure laziness or lack of effort in the programming. All Necromorphs' types are formed depending on the situation and their surroundings. Some Necromorphs are formed out of several victims and not just one like the Slashers.

There has to be other ways to spread the virus like an STD or Contact with an open wound, not just through an infector.

The only reason I believe Franco turned into a Necromorph while half-dead at the beginning of Dead Space 2 is because he got pierced in the brain by an Infector.

Hmm...there's more to be learned about Necromorph convergence, hopefully in future titles they go more in-depth on how they're formed and see more types of Necromorphs in the middle of their transformation rather than just 'Slashers'.

                                - Feeders are “what happens when a human isn’t actually infected by a Swarm or by a Divider head, but by necessity ends up eating the flesh of a turned necro”
                                - Icy Planet is called Tau Volantis
                                - Fodder transform into two different necromorphs depending on how you kill them
                                - More plentiful ammo drops
                                - Team wants it to be less linear than DS1/2
                                - Explore large environments and find ”unique beta missions” that aren’t required to complete the main game
