        It will finally...

          • Act 4 was only good because of nostalgia, either way, it was pretty crap.
There were hardly any enemies, wasn't challengable, and the fight between the Metal Gears yet epic, was totally overrated.
But meh, opinions are opinions, a level that was totally boring, and by boring I mean totally boring, was Act 3.

I liked Act3, but there were only 3 secvences (folowing that guy, bike, boss) which isn't much... But it was in Prague (capital of Czech rep. in which I live) so for me it was quite nice gaming moment aswell...

PS: one of my favourite MGS1 lines : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lj7Uf...e=channel_page

And from MG2 (Big Boss to SS) : "The loser will be liberated from the battlefield, and the survivor will live out the rest of his days as a soldier."

              • Random - Yeah, I'll give you the MGS3 plot is not particular better than a Saturday morning cartoon, but you have to blame the ambition of the MGS2 plot that "no one got" for that. Kojima may have been acclaimed for the gameplay and graphics and that may have gone to his head, but I'd more likely believe the critical comments made more of the change and due to that I have no idea where you and Mr. Spencer are coming from.

Kojima would have done the 60's spy story regardless, but after the fact the majority of people didn't understand MGS2 - it's not surprising the plot of that game was so straight forward, the characters not so deep and the gameplay focused a little more on action towards the end.

But yeah, the camo and healing systems annoyed the crap out of me and there are numerous other issues, but the reason I don't bag on the problems is that MGS3 also does things right a lot too. The jungle setting is still one of the best in games even now (Uncharted looks pretty but dear god does that path feel even more linear than the linear-ness of MGS3), there are some clever elements to the gameplay and bosses that doesn't even compare to some other entire games, and gameplay gimmicks I really like... like the bit when you climb the almost endless ladder to the tune of Snake Eater is classic. That said too, the Shagohod sequence is still one of my fav events in the entire series.

Personally, yes I'd rather replay MGS and MGS2 before touching MGS3. MGS is a classic and MGS2 is a very well balanced title (if you take the time to see what the point of the game is, especially the second half that usually throws people for a spin). But I've constantly been struggling to see what the complaints have been for a lot of people because most of the stuff in 3 and 4, as I said, was put in purely because people complained to begin with.

Ironically... looking at what I'm saying here then, my only... complaint... when I really get down to it, is that Kojima needs to stop listening to people about his games and really be a proper director - because when he does projects that HE wants to do with just his team for input, they tend to turn out better than the ones with a fan base, expectations, and opinions attached. Which leads me to...

Couldn't agree with you more on that one.

                  • You know, I will say this much about MGS4. It was nice to see REX again, still operational after ten or so years.
                    See you in hell.

                    • The only Metal Gear Solid game I played was The Twin Snakes.
                      Over-rated tripe.
I'll never play a Metal Gear Solid game again.

But as for my favourite character, it has to be the Man with a box of killer bees (I've watched my brother play some).

                      • Mmm, time for my input in this topic. Unlike everyone else, I'm in an awkward situation. I have to make a whole nostalgia post without making it sound like everyone else's nostalgia posts...fuck it. I don't think it's possible to express how important MGS was and is to me as a gamer. BEWARE: OVERABUNDANCE OF PARENTHETICAL STATEMENTS AHEAD

Metal Gear Solid, from the time of the US demo in Japanese (the strangulation sounds really stuck out like a sore thumb: "AY...AY-AY-AY-AY-AY-AY-") was like no other. Once the game came out, I think I was too young to understand/care about the political/philosophical workings of the plot (which just makes it fair game for replay value years later), but that didn't matter. The gameplay had an abundance of possibilities for something that was short, easy, and linear. It was so cool to have different ways to go about dealing with certain bosses (which MGS2 perfected, IMO). The characters were memorable as hell if melodramatic (though I guess that allowed me to appreciate it as a kid), and every cutscene/CODEC break was directed near-perfectly, with some parts scaring me considerably (the intensity of the FOXDIE sequences, the ninja's introduction, the Ultrabox scene). The music was so damn good, I remember being outraged when they didn't keep the boss BGM (that baritone reverbed choir in the beginning will always give me chills) in Twin Snakes (outraged enough to TYPE IT UP ON GAMEFAQS RAAAAA!!!) And of course, the quirks...oh, how can anyone forget the quirks? The nonchalant breaking of the fourth wall, weirdly delivered lines ("Naomi? What the hell!"), the unintended humor of using the Nikita launcher, and all the gameplay and codec bonuses.

And now for something completely different: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvexQfVzmug

The only Metal Gear Solid game I played was The Twin Snakes. Over-rated tripe.
._. At the risk of sounding like a fanboy by passive-agressively saying that your opinion is wrong, the only argument I have is that The Twin Snakes and the original MGS are two different gaming experiences. I said before that MGS1 was short and easy, well in updating it to be more of a companion to MGS2, Twin Snakes ended up being even easier. Unfortunately, I don't think playing the PS1 version will sway you because despite the noticeable differences, saying the entire thing was tripe I suppose implies that you didn't like the story either (I don't think making Snake a bit superhuman put a damper on the IMO impressive narrative). I don't know what else to tell you.

And that is exactly the problem.

I'm not saying MGS is for you, but for me, The Twin Snakes was my least favorite MGS.

I concur with the others, it's a shame you never played the original PS1 title... it is a far better game than the Gamecube edition, which was a broken and horrible version of the original MGS title... BUT now that it's ruined any interest in the series, the rest of the series will never win you over no matter how decent MG/MG2/MGS actually are to most people.

The whole Act 4 was entirely a guilty nostalgia trip... and one of the best moments I've had in gaming the past five years, but I do agree with earlier comments on this somewhat to why this is... I think I liked it more purely because of the connection to the original MGS and about the fact it had been 10 years since I'd played the original for the first time and not so much for what it actually contained. Outside of Resident Evil, MGS was one of my main reasons for staying in gaming because I liked the blend of movie and game it presented.
