Yeah...you're gonna have to go Wiki that one. It's almost impossible to sum up one of the games in the series, let alone the series as a whole, in a single post. There is a lot of story.

There is a series retrospective on Gametrailers.com which does a good job of covering everything in enough detail until MGS4 (because it was made coming up to the release of the game). Thats probably worth checking out.

Peace Walker will have over 160 minutes of cutscenes. In comparison, MGS3 had 216 minutes while MGS4 had 545 minutes.
That's still a lot for a PSP game.

As Dark_Chris did correctly state, that I forgot to mention, there are a few errors and a couple of missing bits of info that are kinda important, but for the most part it explains all of the games until MGS4 well. You'll know enough of what you need to know from them.

MGS PW totally deserve 40/40
Fact: Famitsu is advertised within Peace Walker
Fact: The president of Enterbrain (Famitsu's parent company) advertised the game.
Fact: It's in famitsu's interest that the game sells well.
Bullshit: You've played Peace Walker to decide it deserves 40/40
Bullshit: You've read Famitsu (in Japanese)
Bullshit: You've read every other magazine to know that Famitsu is the only objective one
As much as I think Metal Gear is over-rated tripe, I must admire Kojima for what he inspires in his fans. I would have thought the gratuitous and (in my opinion) hilariously justified product placement would turn alot of people away from this game. Apparently not...
Keep bending over for it. He loves it just as much as you do.sigpic

Whats wrong with product placement? And since when does product placement make a game into "tripe"?
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is full of it, yet its one of the greatest games out there and definitely the top stealth game. Sam Fisher uses a Nokia cellphone in Double Agent. So do I. COINCIDENCE????
For all we know, PW might deserve the 40/40. Its certainly a massive project on a handheld console. Certainly beats the average-to-shit games which get far more publicity, hype and absolutely unwarranted reviews/scores in Western internet outlets.

I've never played Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, but I assume that the ads are contextualised and unobtrusive. When you have cans of cola and chips in the jungle, and anachronisms such as ads for deoderant and magazines that weren't in existence in the period the game was set.
To me, advertising like this shows a lack of respect for the consumer. And the justification was that the placement was to 'surprise' gamers.
I don't think advertising like this ads anything to the experience, no matter what Kojima says his intentions were.
The real issue isn't what I think of the ads, or what I think of the games. There's a huge conflict of interest here, and people like Dark Chris are happy to gloss over it and defend journalism like this.
Although I don't enjoy Metal Gear games, I'm not oblivious to the critical acclaim that they recieve either. And indeed, Peace Walker my merit a perfect review score - but it will never get an unbiased review from Famitsu.
And as far as I know, that's the only review score that's been released at the moment (except for Dark Chris' review too of course). When more reviews come it'll show this to be either an inflated score, or an unnecessary mar on the games valid perfect score.sigpic

Did it create immersion? No. And they didnt break it. They didnt make the game better or worse. The placement has to be creative, or intrusive, to get a reaction. But in almost all cases, it has no effect on games quality or the fun factor.
And play Splinter Cell. Because Michael Ironside is awesome.
