Walter is #1. As yo play through The Room you discover his monstrous side bu also why he became that monster in the first place. All he wanted as a child was his mother...the mother who had abandoned him. Instead he was raised by a cult who made him eat leeches and possibly his friends.
Needless to say he was fucked up and through his messed up thought process he decided to take the god of that cult and put its essence in the only true home he had ever known...Room 302.
I also like Maria because of her complexity. As seen iN Born From A Wish she had her own feelings and ideas...but she still is just a construct of James' distrubed mind and Silent Hill's power. Her existence condems James but she didn't choose to be that way...she doesn't want to be that way initiaully.
