  • Watched Conan the Barbarian, the remake and I gotta say...talk about fuck awful. The script is bad, direction is mediocre, the editing is surprisingly amateurish, theres no real flow of a story in the film and its also...off in the films transitions, and even the music in the film sucks. Its so bland and generic I can hardly remember what it sounds like, most of the acting is ok...minus Rose McGowans porn star performance. Seriously, everyone in the film speaks with a certain tone in their voice, and in some cases an accent, but McGowan sounds like a goddamn valley girl.

The remake makes the Schwarzenegger original film look great, and the original film was pretty bad too, especially to those of us who are familiar with the original stories from the 30's(Father read them to me when I was a kid, I've re-read some of them myself since.) but the 81' Schwarzenegger film at least had something of its own to present in terms of music and story.

This films story was a mishmash of other films, and it really sucks as a whole.

Waste of a good opportunity. Avoid the film like a plague.

    • "We" rented The Hunger Games ("we" as "I didn't")

Not as bad as I thought it would be. Seemed like one of those typical 80's action flicks about running around killing people & set in a wonky futuristic world. And for some reason, almost everyone is wearing stuff that came out of Lady Gaga's closet.

The plot was decent but it wasn't something worth making a film on. I suspect that if the books weren't the best sellers that they are and had a huge fanbase, this film wouldn't have been made at all (at least not with its current budget). The story is not worth the trouble IMO. Maybe the books were better at telling the story. I dunno.

For example, the film sort of failed at depicting the relationship/bonding between Katniss and Rue in a proper manner. To the point where the audience would feel the impact of seeing one of those characters bite the big one. Rue needed more character development. Showing her doing kid stuff and talking about her fears and future plans and stuff. Making us hope that she makes it through. But I guess the producers of the film suspected everyone had read the books and so they just got got that quickly out of the way to set up the sequel.

I have not seen Skyfall yet because I'm waiting to see it with my brother who is a big James Bond fan. I already heard that is one of the best Bond films of all time. So... man... can't wait.

      • I preferred the Hunger games when it was "Battle Royale".

I also caught Lincoln the other night with my father, been a long time since Speilberg made a movie thats more than Mediocre.
He did a damn fine job on this film, Danial Day-Lewis was a fantastic Lincoln, Tommy Lee Jones was a hilarious Thadeus Stevens and the film was very adult. Had lots of amusing moments and in terms of historical accuracy this was pretty damn good.

Didn't feel like a Spielberg film either, if you like historical films, as well as 'grown up' films, this is a good one.
Not sure how many folks across the pond would be interested in the film as its about US history, as well as it does have 1 anti British joke(which given the time frame historically, we were friends with the British...but there was still some animosity).

          • Saw Skyfall yeasterday. Good movie, but I'm still nostalgic of past Bonds. Also I thought it kind of felt like a conclusion to the whole series and the Bond character.

I don't know if it was better than Casino Royale, I should see it again to judge it properly.

I preferred it when it was called The Running Man.

Last watched - X-Men First Class. Still fun, still not enough Magneto revenge.

And that was what I was actually referring to when I said "(The Hunger Games) Seemed like one of those typical 80's action flicks about running around killing people & set in a wonky futuristic world"

I understand why teens consider this film brand new and original. But to someone like me, who has been watching films since the 80's, its not original. But I still found it somewhat entertaining. If a bit weak in terms of... everything (action, drama, acting, plot, etc.)

BTW, I get a kick when young ones say that Merida (from the movie Brave) or even Hawkeye as seen in the Avengers, ripped off the Katniss character (they all practice archery you see... archery is totally new and no one did it in films, like ever.).

Hunger games is closer to Battle Royale than Battle Royale is to the Running man. Though all 3 use the same concept, Battle Royale and the Running man used it as a game show.Though you dont get as much of a sense of it being a game show in the Battle Royale movie as you do th ebook.

No one should watch 'Battleship' and no one should have to watch Rihanna act.

I'm with you on that one. I still can't believe that she acted as a marine, poor bastards.

                            • I watched Skyfall this afternoon.
I haven't seen many other Bond films and didn't have too much invested, but I really really enjoyed it. Some really effective and tense scenes. I thought the film was building up to a much grander final act; but even the comparatively low key set-piece was enjoyable.

                              • The book Battle Royale doesn't feature a game show, that concept was only used in the absolute clusterfuckery that was the English translation of the manga. In the book, much like the film it's a program devised by the military, to keep youths in check.
