Yeah, but if you're buying brand new, they don't really ship the 40 gigs anymore.

I've got a 40gb PS3. No problems yet, and I really enjoy it.
I am running out of room on it. Soon I'll get a larger hard disk.
Every game I have has a mandatory install when you play it for the first time. They vary in size. The biggest game I have is Oblivion GOTY edition, which installs 5.4GB onto the hard disk. The smallest is Resistance, which is only about 120mb. So it really varies depending on the game.

Keep in mind that the PS3 console comes with a SIXAXIS controller, and not a Dualshock3, so it doesn't vibrate.
I don't know about the USA and European markets, but here in Japan alot of the bundles that come out now have a DS3 controller included. I saw that the MGS4 and Littlebigplanet console bundles both include a Dualshock3 (LBP actually has 2 instead of a SIXAXIS and DS3). I got LBP with a DS3 last week for about 7500yen.
Although the bundles may not be available in your territory, you can import, as the PS3 games aren't region locked.

Keep in mind that DVD playback, and PS1 back-compatibility (and PS2 back compat if your hardware supports it) WILL be region locked. So if you have alot of domestic PS1 games you'd like to play, then you probably should get a local PS3.

I think i can answer this to a degree.

I bought my system refurbished from gamestop and it still runs really well. MY friend todd bought his new in the box and i have to hunt down a way to repair it becuase he's an idiot, and lazy.

with that said i think the bug is with the bluray drive. todds system degraded to the point were it would not even play ps1 or reg CDs.

I think when gamestop fixed it they replaced the BRD drive with a better functioning unit as i have been using it for the last year and a half and my frineds broke down in july

Yeah, but is that something that's consistent in many of the systems? Or is that just something that happens to like that 0.3% of people whose systems break down?

I know my friend had one of the older models, that were released soon after PS3 came out, and that one was loud as hell. The cooling system would practically whistle. And I heard that THAT was fairly common in the early models.

Well they have to play Blu-Ray, the PS3 games are Blu-Ray format.

the only thing keeping my friend from buying a new one is the rumor of no BC on future units

Well, the new units can't play PS2 games, right? So it's already gone.

But I'm pretty sure it'll always play PS1 games, since it has to 0play the PS1 titles which you download from the PS Store.

has anyone tried to play PS1 games on the newer PS3s?

Yeah, I'm not too positive about backward compatibility on the new models. Because different sources say different things...

I actually think you CAN play PS2 games on it too, but instead of playing them from the hardware, it's emulated and so, performance isn't guaranteed. As for PS1 games, I'm not sure how it works. I guess maybe it's emulated as well. According to Sony's website, there is some backwards compatibility on it, though.

This is what Biohazard EX said, right? xD
