Yes. I'm pretty sure that's how it works. Because the PS1 games that you download have to work perfectly, so it wouldn't be emulated.
And the ones that are on CDs just run using the same hardware.

No. That's the problem, I got different people telling me different things.. Sony says it is, people say it isn't, but EVERY person who says it's not, has a PS2, and hasn't even tried it.

Only thing I know about PS3 backwards compatibility is that older models had a PS2 hardware chip (Emotion chip, at least that's what I think it was called) in it as well as a chip for PS1 games. With newer models, the PS2 chip was removed to save money. The PS1 chip is still there and is essentially something like a BIOS chip or something along those lines. I had heard rumors that the 80GB could play PS2 games, but I'm not sure. I know the 60GB/20GB models were the only definite ones that could play PS2 software.

My friend is getting rid f his 20GB model, so I may pick it up for PS2 games.

I can only speak for my 60gig PAL PS3. We didn't get the 'Emotion chip' but PS2 games are still supported with emulation technology. I havn't come across any PS1 or PS2 game it can't play yet. However the games have to be PAL because PS1 & PS2 games are region locked.
I'm not sure about the newer models but I've got a feeling they have dropped the PS2 support entirely (hence, I was really glad to buy a 60gig when I did!).

Well I heard the 40GB and 80GB doint have as meny softwers so it caint play PS1 games and some PS2 one's that's sucks that why I went with the 60GB.

all ps3 can play all ps1 games,but only the 80GB(mgs4 bundle or motorstorm bundle),20GB and the 60GB can play ps2 games,the 80GB can play about 85% of ps2 games,for the 40GB and the new 80GB they only have 2 usb instead of 4 like the other models,they also lack the cards reader,so if your going to buy go for the 40GB,mine never fail me.

It's really too bad people are so cheap, that they wouldn't want to spend an extra $100 or so to have a fully Backward compatible PS3. Which is why Sony had to come out with so many "more budget friendly" models.
The 60 gig was worth every penny. So far I have only met 1 or 2 PS1 games that caused me problems, and those problems were avoidable.

I wouldn't call it being cheap. I just don't want to pay for something that I already have. I've got a fine and fully working PS2. No way I'd pay about 20,000yen extra to get as used 60gb model, over a new 40gb model.

If someone didn't have a PS2, then I'd understand that they'd want a back compatible unit. But the PS2 sales still make Sony quite a bit of coin. So instead of having 2 PS3s on the market, one with back compatability, and one without, they have the PS3 and the PS2, which have seperate libraries. It's cheaper for newcomers who want access to the PS2 library, which doesn't alienate as many people as having 2 PS3 models would.

I think it's just good business sense.

Well, in that case, you shouldn't care whether the PS2 is backward compatible either. Which I'm sure you don't.
But I'd rather had a backward compatible console, and happily sold my PS2.

And yes, I do agree with you, having the option for less money is definitely good. But that's not really the case, since the 60 Gig model was discontinued.

I just noticed a new 160gig model at the HK PSN store. I havn't heard about those ones...
But being able to easily change the HDD or add an external one, I guess the size of the HDD it comes with aint that important.

as far as i know the 160GB is the same as the 40GB but of course with a 160GB HD,it also comes with uncharted and Pain.
