On a personal note, I just bought my Xbox when the RE5 demo came out, so it's brand new and I'm basically praying SO HARD that I never experience this wretched event. Now that I've grown a bit tired of the RE5 demo, I'm sort of scared to ever go near my Xbox until RE5 actually comes out.Last edited by Bianca; 12-22-2008, 01:49 AM.

I've played on my 360 LOADS in the past year. I got my 360 last Christmas. So far, I've never had the RROD. I got scared once when I got one quarter red, but I realised it was because my harddrive wasn't put back in properly. There's no reason to NOT buy a 360 just because of being scared of the RROD. Even if you do get it, Microsoft repair it for free, and give you a free month XBL. It normally takes just under a week or two.
Ganado wants to explain his take on the RROD..

Right, let's get this first part out of the way before I go into detail. I do not want any stupid fan-boy bias into this thread, it goes to any side. Please post factual information on the ROOD issue, do not be a fanboy on this matter. Please, because I'm sure if you people don't want to hear that silly nonsense.
The first chips in the 360 release had a high percentage chance of RROD, this was because Microsoft went for the cheapest chip in the board, and the way it's set up inside the console was trigger happy.
The Falcon chip after still had a smaller percentage but it still existed. But Microsoft allowed a 3 year return policy on the RROD.
Now, the new 360's with the Jasper chip will not have RROD, ever. So if anyone wants to get a 360, look up the Jasper information to spot one at retail. But wait a few months.

I got mine in July, this year, and hasn't had a problem at all....... except once in geras of war it sudenlly froze, but then I discovered it was the disc. And a `roblem I also have is that here in Uruguay we use 220W on electricity, so I have to use a big Transformer to play in my 360, and it reeeeeaaallly heats up, and then it sudenlly turns off, so I can't play for very long; other that that, my 360 works OK

It can get a little annoying when people talk about the RROD as if it's as common as getting herpes after sleeping with hookers. The RROD is a rare occurence if anything, and it isn't a reason not to buy the console, especially when it's repaired for free. The 360 is a very good console and it shouldn't be a reason not to buy it or to mark it down in comparison to PS3. It's a very good console, the RROD is rare now and it's cheap and has a great selection of games. I may well get a PS3, but I had the choice of 360/PS3 and never looked back.

In pretty much any industry, its considered "normal" or "acceptable" when the defective rate is about 5%. Its already in the budget.
So a "rare" number would be anything below 2-3%. And then we see cases like some guy getting his 12th X360, or that industry reports nearly 33% of the X360s going through RROD. Thats not rare. Thats shockingly awful! And in the same time, its amazing, because you can see how tolerant the market is. Microsoft has done something amazing during the past 5 years, or the videogame community has lost 20 points off their IQ.
Heres my best Christmas wishes for the Jasper chips.
If Logitech made consoles, Id get one right away...

Yes it is. People are talking as if you buy a 360, they're going to break the second time you turn the damn thing on. I've had mine for a year. I don't know how you can comment either, considering you don't even own a console. Where are you getting your figures of 33% from?
I've had mine for a year and had no problems. Gareth had his for 3 years without a problem. The earliest models had issues, and the new models have the problem resolved. It's not fair to say "Don't buy this console, because there's a chance it may break". The 360 may have had technical issues in the past, but in terms of its online service, the game library available and the general popularity in the gaming community, the 360 will come out on top.
It's not fair the comments people are making. "Oh, I've bought one for Christmas, I'm scared to put it on incase it gets the RROD.."

I dont need to own a console to know that it has a higher than normal statistical chance of breaking down. Considering I play videogames, this knowledge just happens to pop up. Seriously, calm down. Noone is saying you shouldnt buy one. Just correcting the assumption that the problem is "rare".

It is rare. Nowhere in your original post did you state that the 33% was an old figure. You said yourself the current rate now sits between 3-10%, and Microsoft still offer a warranty on it. I am calm, where are you getting the impression I'm not?
Just to be clear, you can turn on your console without it exploding.

I believe they are more reliable than they used to be but it still happens often.
You don't have to look very far to find loads of stories and stats about it. There was an interesting article recently that explained the history of it all. Not sure if the failure rate is still 33% but it was. And that wasn't just launch consoles or the early models...
I'm also a bit baffled at how forgiving a lot of people are about it. "My 360 has red-ringed 3 times... but Microsoft always replaces it free of charge. YAY! Microsoft are so cool!"
If it wasn't for MS's incredibly deep pockets, the console would be in real trouble. It has so far cost MS over 1 billion $ to replace faulty 360s.
People complain about the price of the PS3 but Sony actually lose money on every console they sell. The PS3 is filled with expensive components that cost more than the price they sell it for. Any complex electrical appliance can break or fail (including PS3s) but there's never been a less reliable gaming console than the 360.
Obviously I don't like Microsoft or the 360 but I do see it's got some great games and (when working) it performs very well. If it was designed properly (as in not get too hot etc.) and if they didn't cut costs in using shitty components, then it would be very hard to find fault in it.
Here's a fun read for those who havn't seen it:
