wtf is wrong with the people in this world!?

i found this on msn today while checking my email

Teen accused of sex assaults in Facebook scam, Student allegedly blackmailed classmates tricked into sending nude photos.

MILWAUKEE - An 18-year-old male student is accused of posing as a girl on Facebook, tricking at least 31 male classmates into sending him naked photos of themselves and then blackmailing some for sex acts.
"The kind of manipulation that occurred here is really sinister in my estimation," Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel said Wednesday.
The students go to New Berlin Eisenhower High School in New Berlin, which is in Waukesha County about 15 miles west of Milwaukee.

Anthony Stancl, of New Berlin, was charged Wednesday with five counts of child enticement, two counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child, two counts of third-degree sexual assault, possession of child pornography, repeated sexual assault of the same child, and making a bomb threat.
Stancl's attorney, Craig Kuhary, said Stancl plans to plead not guilty to the charges and hopes to reach a plea agreement with the district attorney
"It's too early in the case for me to make a statement, other than the fact at some point we are going to go into events that had taken place earlier that might have had some impact on what he did here," he said. He wouldn't go into specifics.
The incidents allegedly happened from spring 2007 through November, when officers questioned Stancl about a bomb threat he allegedly sent to teachers and wrote about on a school's bathroom wall. It resulted in the closing of New Berlin Eisenhower Middle and High School.
According to the criminal complaint, Stancl first contacted the students through the social networking site Facebook, pretending to be a girl named Kayla or Emily.
The boys reported that they were tricked into sending nude photos or videos of themselves, the complaint said.
Thirty-one victims were identified and interviewed and more than half said the girl with whom they thought they were communicating tried to get them to meet with a male friend to let him perform sex acts on them.
They were told that if they didn't, she would send the nude photos or movies to their friends and post them on the Internet, according to the complaint. Stancl allegedly used the excuse to get the victims to perform repeated acts, the complaint said.

Seven boys were identified in the complaint by their initials as either having to allegedly perform sex acts on Stancl or Stancl on them. The complaint said Stancl took photos with his cell phone of the encounters.
Officers found about 300 nude images of juvenile males on his computer, according to the complaint. Prosecutors said the victims were as young as 15.
A preliminary hearing for Stancl has been scheduled for Feb. 26. The maximum penalty if convicted on all charges is nearly 300 years in prison.

I love Facebook, I only add people as friends that I know in person. Anyone who does otherwise is a moron.

Not a problem with the site. Just a problem with people, and that one in particular.

Pfft, 300 years in prison. Oh noes!

In any case, I'm not defending what the guy did, but those who were allegedly "tricked" into sending nude photos/videos of themselves really should've had enough common sense not to do something so stupid. I mean, seriously. It's kind of hard to feel bad for people who were being reckless in the first place, teenagers or not.

Yeah, this is a problem with individuals and not Facebook.

Could happen in any community and place.

Some friends of my little brother apparently every now and then group up and create fictive "underage girls" and enter those trendy local teen chatrooms posing as these fictive girls. Then they see if there are any disturbing old men there who "likes 'em young (underage)", to then pull things rather far before they drop the bomb on them. (Guess they're slightly inspired by How to Catch a Predator Cruel: Yes, but still... I can't help but feel that those "victims" of these pranks deserve it... seriously... underage girls?)

It's actually pretty disturbing to see how little time it takes in some of those places, especially late at night, from when someone join (with a simple username like "Girl1995") to someone else (with a username like "M36" or "Thomas27") will start asking you over PM "Want to earn something?" and/or "Like older boys?", followed by "What's your MSN?" and "Accept invite from ___@___.___")

However, it's pretty nice how most of those sites now have a direct report button to contact police about these things. But that's why they quickly move things to MSN, harder for them to trace than a local webchat + there they can in "private" pull things further, I guess.

There are indeed a lot of bad people out there

Yer but what about self control? Indeed there are bad people about, not as many as the media would like you to believe and the establishment want things to happen like this on the net coz they can't control it, how boring would it be if our nannying govenment was in on the net from the start, with CCTV cameras everywhere and being told what to say and do I find the net somewhat refreshing for freedom of speech, unless you have rather fascist admin that only let thetr views be aired, there are some bad forums out there like that!

When I was younger I had a morbid fear of the modern age, all the films pre-Star Wars were mainly dystopian in theme, we did 1984 at school and this is far worse that Orwell or any film writer could envisage.

So don't play the game and self police where you are and what you are posting and thank your lucky stars we have a web like we do!

Surveillance is a tricky thing, really.

Too much of it and people will complain about their freedom being removed.
Too little of it and people will be worried about their safety being unimportant.

And in either way, if something should happen, there'll be too little of it, or the current one isn't done the "right way".
