  • FLAC lossy

I'm trying to rip some CDs to my computer in FLAC lossy, and I've got the choice between "default" 768kb/s, and the highest bitrate of 1024. What the hell? Doesn't FLAC lossy capture all the audio quality, regardless of bitrate? I don't mind the file size increase, but isn't lossless meant to be uncompressed audio?

Uhh, lossy and lossless are the exact opposites. Lossy will result in quality degradation no matter what. Lossless (or otherwise, uncompressed) will not.

Oh lol, I thought "lossy" was a nickname for "lossless".

The way FLAC basically works is by encoding the files to a high quality variable bit rate. Some sounds don't really require the full 1411kbps the CD offers, so lowering the bit rate doesn't do anything to the sound. By analyzing the audio it can lower and increase the bit rate as needed so it doesn't stay at a constant of 1411kbps, it'll just stay as high as it needs to, thus lowering the file size. You won't really lose any audio quality by keeping it at the default of 768kbps
