Hitler: Mad, genius, or both?

Guys! (You know who you are) Cut it! The only thing about this thread that warrants a potential lockdown is the amount of people derailing it with "PLZ LOCK!" talk.
This is the Off Topic segment of the forums, people may discuss "whatever" in here as long as it's not entirely unfit.
Personally, there's no denying that Hitler was a charismatic leader who achieved a lot of impressive things, and who had an incredibly weird, but still somewhat tasteful, sense of art. It's not good to say when things went out of control and he became the symbol of evil that him, his hairdo and the toothbrush mustache is associated with today (Don't need a swastika for that!)
Though... I guess around the time someone submitted and approved the designs for a few things related to the SS (mainly the stuff involving skulls) someone should've probably raised suspicion and taken action :p
Hitler, as a character, is a very interesting element that can be used for many things creative without it being harmful. Sure, some people just like to forget things (which is seriously bad, but people shouldn't go bitch about something for all of eternity either! Think about the educational benefits. A lot of people get their ABC on a lot of subjects through works of fiction, and it doesn't really require a genius to sort between fact and fiction (unless it's written by Dan Brown, who apparently supersedes anything on the reliability ladder. Hope Langdon gets to play with a religious nazi mystery in his next adventure.)
One of my history teachers back in the school days told me he was always amazed by the sources people would cite whenever he'd ask them how on earth they could know about Subject A or Subject B. Stuff that wasn't part of the study plan, stuff that was not even part of the educational books at all, etc... stuff that basically no one should be expected to know unless they'd either randomly dug out the info themselves in some huge encyclopedia or something.
Hitler did some bad shit, no one needs to tell you that. He wasn't alone either (hopefully that doesn't come as a surprise either), and he's certainly not the only historical figure that's got a lot of dirt on himself.
Anyway, carry on.

Hitler a genius? In simple terms- certainly. Just because we may call him "intelligent", "charismatic", "ambitious" and whatnot, doesnt change the fact that he was evil. So those who are sensitive to the name, should chill.
In September, I had a talk with a jewish girl from the States, and I struck me that a lot of people have no idea how different images were left to different countries by "Axis" and "Allies".
Take the Baltics for example, the three little countries that have been under one or another foreign ruler since the 13th century. Nazis were seen here as liberators, and even though people here knew that if Axis were to succeed, the countries were not going to be fully independant, but the autonomy and humane treatment by the highly disciplined, well educated and humane nazi soldiers (quite a different picture compared to popular media, right?) was certainly a lot better than the alternative.
"Allies", the good guys, in post WW2 territorial spoil-fest gave those three nations to the USSR, and the atrocities commited here during the first 20-30 years were certainly on par with what happened at the concentration camps. Except, nobody writes about it, because soviets did it, and they were the "good guys".
There are always two sides to a coin. The girl was extremely offended by our conversation about the events in Baltics post WW2, where the discussion was open-minded and gave some props to Werhmacht, aswell as condeming what Soviets did here. She was expecting what anyone who wasnt local, would. A discussion on bad and evil nazis were, period.

There are some who talk of the effect the lack of a nazi occupation in Norway would've had too (such as the likely scenario of Russia going all the way, "claiming" it. Nice coastline is nice! For many reasons!)
One thing's for sure, Norway would not be what it is today if it weren't for the events of WWII.

I study WW II as a personal hobby of mine. Now please don't flame me for this: But I do own a copy of Hitler's manafesto "Mein Kampf" or "My Struggle". I own detailed mental breakdowns on both Hitler and Himmler, both fucked up imo. I ordered "Downfall" from amazon.com and once I get more money, I plan to buy the book detailing Josef Mengele.
Why? Just my hobby to learn this shit inside and out. Out of all the wars, WW II is perhaps the most interesting of the lot. Hell, I even have a few books on Stalin.

I wasn't saying you were, just what you said reminded me exactly of that particular thing. God, I love Flame Warriors. Sorry if I caused any offense. You really can apply one of those monikers for everyone you come across. Oh, and since this post needs to be on topic and pertaining to Hitler, where is the original poster? I'm curious to hear her side of things, it's like she made the thread and then up and went!Last edited by Mr. Spencer; 05-25-2009, 06:10 PM.See you in hell.
