I don't care how fun a game is...if the story isn't good enough to keep me interested, I won't enjoy the game nearly as much as I would if the story was awesome. Also, why is it one or the other? Why can't games have good gameplay AND story? MGS4 was like this.
Resistance 2, for example, sucked because it was all gameplay and no story. No narrative, no nothing. It was deathmatch after deathmatch against waves of Chimera, and 80% of the story unraveled through intel. That's not fun to me.

The Sega CD died because of lack luster gameplay with its focus being more on playing movie clips.
Story alone does not make a great game, name one game with crappy gameplay but a great story and you still enjoy it to this day...

So gameplay is the most important aspect overall, and should not be given a side seat to story, unless it's an RPG really.

And a good question, what is better, and what would you play more? Rule of Rose (Bad Gameplay, Great Story) Or Battlefield 2 (Great Gameplay, Bad Story)?Last edited by missvalentine; 07-03-2009, 01:46 PM.

Anyways, i think most people in this thread would like movies over games.
The thread is titled, "what is more important, gameplay or story?" Gameplay is obviously the most important of the two, because without it you don't have a game do you. You can still have a great game with no story.
So argue as much as you want but gameplay will always be > than story will be in a video game.
Yes, even in MGS gameplay is more important than the story.

But in most games with simple/little or no story's, the gameplay is just so fun and addictive that you never get bored. Like with Ratchet, Jak, Battlefield and Battlefront games.
I think games with no story have better gameplay than the gameplay in games that do have intricate and important story's where gameplay takes a back seat.
A game without story will still be better than a game without gameplay every time, no matter how bad it is.
Also watching the same movie over and over again gets really boring too.

well i call bullshit for the what? the 4th time i think? idk ive lost count. a game with out a story is like this
objective #1.kill this man
BOOM your fucking done. simple as blinking.
with a story there is objectives
objective number 1.infiltrate this base and try and kill this guy and see if they have the ability to do such and such
a game with a story will still be better than a game without a story everytime,no matter how bad and truthful it is.

Yes, i know, but to have a story, you have to first have gameplay. And since where arguing which is more important, obviously gameplay is, since you can't even have a story if you don't have gameplay in the first place.
I know gameplay is made better when story is added to the mix, but this about which one is the most important out of the two.

Well, it's pretty clear the early RE games weren't all about GamePlay. How do we know this? The game wasn't a first person shooter as origionally planned. They deliberately chose to use a clunkier control system to enhance the game's atmosphere. Now...where does atmosphere end up in a debate between story and gameplay? Damn.
As for me, it's story. Always, always story. I have to give a rats ass as to why I'm shooting things in the face or cutting them in half with a sword. I've played a number of games with control systems I found relatively unpleasant (Fahrenheit, a Final Fantasy game...any Final Fantasy game) because I was intrigued by the story, but the only game that's an exception is Resident Evil, which I played mostly for the scares. Now it is because, after all these years, I find myself giving a crap about the characters.
Ultimately I have to want to know what comes next, whether it be a book, movie or game. If I don't, if the only thing I have to look foward to is a bigger gun and bigger enemies, I'm outta here. Hence my love for Heavy Rain. The story looks amazing. The Gameplay is one long quicktime event. But I'll take it and take it gladly for that delcious candy coated story.

There are tons of those. True, most of the ones I played were Japanese hentai games with my wife as we laughed and laughed, but...
Well, for a slightly more kid friendly example, there are the Broken Sword games, Monkey Island games, Discworld games...all point and click adventures and all ultimately awesome.
