It's not just shoot things, there are many genre's out there.

What about Racing Games? There are many good car games out there. Like Flatout.

    Spoiler:

It's probably one of the funnest racing games i have ever had the joy of playing.

What about platformers? Ratchet and Clank, and Jak and Daxter are as much about exploration as about shooting things. They are superb games. They're brilliant. And the focus is on gameplay. What about the Uncharted series? The Gameplay in that is amazing.

I mean the classic RE games are gameplay focused too you know, and there not just about shooting, hell it's the story focused RE games are the ones with the shoot everything gameplay. So don't wanna hear that BS man.

There are good mixes as well, like Dead Space has a very balanced focus on gameplay and story which is why i love it so much. It's very good.

Really, how? I never noticed any sort of similarities to Metal Gear Solid.

ETA: Also, the Ratchet and Jak games always had pretty good storylines I thought. I mean, you can say the focus is on gameplay but the latest story arc with Clank going missing is pretty much the drive of the games now isn't it? I could be wrong, I'm not all too clued up on them past the third.

So Resident Evil 2 and Code: Veronica were about shooting everything? Gosh, I never noticed.

The way they made the trailers and advertised how important the story was in RE5 and how much they were focusing on it was very similar to MGS, and many people suspected it would be like MGS.

And if you have noticed the RE and MGS series have many subtle similarities between them too.

Yes they have actually have always had very good story's, but that's just because Insomniac and Naughty Dog are two very talented company's. The focus has always been on gameplay. Always. Though the new Ratchet game is leaning a little more towards story, it is still very much gameplay focused which i love. You can still have a very interesting story and be gameplay focused you know.

Well, the story was important. It wrapped up Weskers story and, perhaps, the storys of Chris and Jill. That's pretty important, don't you think?

Yes, important. But very badly executed. Very badly. Capcom are horrible story tellers compared to many other games companies.

your about to hear some more of "i call BS"
              well i call BS again

the classic RE's such as RE1 and RE2 and CV have focused on the story more than gameplay such as Umbrella, the T-Virus,Wesker's plans,Characters ect ect.
now for gameplay looks look. RE4 focused on gameplay-was a great hit but so many fans hate it cause guess what THERE IS NO STORY, RE5 focused on gameplay and it sucked.

now as for Ratchet and Clank i wouldnt no i dont play them but i garrentee there is a story there that makes it good. as for racing games UH YEAH you have to focus on the gameplay cause your driving a fucking car.

No, the classics are focused on gameplay. Think back to before RE5, UC and all the shitty retcons. When there was just a B grade story and gameplay. It was very much all about the gameplay, the atmosphere and the scares. The story was there to but it never got in the way of anything else until CVX, it was a mix of both but it was still gameplay centric.

BTW RE5 focused the most on story out of all the games in the series, and that is why it sucked so bad. The story got in the way and hindered the gameplay so much in RE5.

uhh no. RE5 focused on the gameplay and wrapped everything up in a hurry so they can focus on the thing that matters the least the gameplay.

I wouldn't say it did at all, the story only enhanced the game and made it one of the best, personally it's up there with RE2 and CV.

I'd also say that RE2 was the first one that perhaps focused on story a bit more, with the 'B' Scenario showing us what Leon was doing during Claires story (I'm following Clare A/Leon B as personal canon).

Okay, the argument that the classic RE's focussed on gameplay and the new RE's focus on story is absolutely ridiculous and flat out untrue. There was a lot of mythos, discussion and a well established story with the previous games before RE4 came out, and RE4 stopped it stone dead. RE4 focussed only on gameplay, no story at all, and while casual gamers love it, most veteran RE fans hate it and/or it's not their favourite. Most people's favourite RE game is RE2, which has archaic gameplay (not even having the 180 degree turn), but great characters with a good story. It's a classic.

RE5's main attraction was again, the gameplay, however it didn't feel as refined or as good as RE4. The gameplay didn't expand on RE4's gameplay in the 5 year difference, just felt identical other than the changed merchant system and the utilization of the D Pad. Aside from that, it felt a little clunkier and Capcom tried too hard with the story. It was good, made it more interesting but wasn't fantastic and wasn't revolutionary either. Both new RE games focus on gameplay and little else and they're the least popular in the RE community.

The older games, the gameplay is much more archaic, but they're classics and loved by a lot of people. CV had appalling gameplay, at times which rendered it unplayable, but the story was fantastic and thus it is my favourite story-wise.

Story is always more important to me than gameplay. Games are much like love. Gameplay is the initial interest and what you notice first, but it's story which keeps you hooked and makes you want to keep going back for more, wanting to know what's going to happen. Of course I love my Halo, just to turn on my 360 and kill a few folk and have a good game, but to me, a game can't be truly fantastic without a good story. It's a necessary component for me that it can't go without.

Of course, it is truly amazing when the two compliment eachother and the two are both equally brilliant. When such a rare thing happens, beautiful things are born, such as the wondrous Mass Effect. A perfect balance between gameplay and story.

So hearing a Hunter from around the corner is part of the story? A zombie jumping out of the closet is story?

If RE5 had focused on gameplay there would be no Sheva, it would have been scary. There would have been no Wesker fight, and it would have been about fighting Bows and just that.

But, we have the partners theme, which means we have to have Sheva, we have Wesker's and Chris's feud which means we get a bunch of fights between two humans. It has a lot of human interaction and Dialog, and is in a less threatening environment because of it. This is because the gameplay is hindered by a badly written story. Yes they may have focused on gameplay, but they made story more important. Which was a bad thing i think.

Anyways there is more chance of capcom deciding to give away RE5 for free than either of us convincing the other on this so lets just agree to disagree cause i don't feel like arguing with anyone really.

I like Gameplay, then Story and lastly Graphics, you like it the other way around, that's the way it is.

It doesn't mean i hate story, i love story, MGS3 is my second favorite game ever and that is heavily story driven. It's just if i was told i could only pick one, either story or gameplay Id choose gameplay.

That's your opinion not mine. The story in RE5 just made it worse for me.

Just because the older games have slightly archaic gameplay doesn't mean that the main focus of the games was not the gameplay. The gameplay is everything from the presentation, the ammo conservation, the horror lighting sounds, atmosphere and everything. It had a well written back story too, RE has always had a goo back story i think, but still the main focus was gameplay i think in my opinion it always seemed that way anyway.

In CVX you would be right it was the story, but not for RE1, RE2 and certainly not RE3. RE1 and RE2 were like a mixture of both, like gameplay 55% and story 45%

Story is always more important to me than gameplay. Games are much like love. True, and I agree there. But you can't have a game, any type of game, without gameplay, otherwise that is called a movie. But you can have a game, and a very good game too, without a story.

So that is my reasoning why i think Gameplay is the most important factor of a video game.

For me, it's storyline. I appreciate fun gameplay, too, but it's always been more about storyline for me in any game I've played. I guess that's why I can't get into generic video games. If there's no concrete storyline, it doesn't hold my interest.
