I know this may come as shocking news, because the story is all wrapped up in the end of the first movie. But in the second one, they actually don't stand around doing nothing like everyone here believes characters do after a story is wrapped up. See, most writers, unlike capcom are not lazy, and come up with new story arcs for their characters, sometimes even being better than the first story arc. This is how a series is made.
If you still don't believe me. You should look up the Indiana Jones film series for more proof on the matter.
Somehow I doubt these films had a "good" over-arching plot to sustain 3 entire films...but I'm sure the box office receipts still provided an overwhelming amount of $$$$ to Disney.
Also, the Pirates series has a better storyline than RE series will ever have.

Oh, they used these revolutionary new devices called Brains, combined with an idea called Brainstorming, it helped greatly allowing the writers to actually come up with a new storyline. I know most people here on THIA believe that the idea is a myth, and cannot possibly be true, since it's common knowledge, that creativity and being inspired to write new material is just a load of BS. But they did it. And it works.

And Capcom did keep creating story arcs for their characters, in their series, Resident Evil. Surely you noticed that Jill's story/experience in RE5 was different than her story/experience in RE3 which was different than her story/experience in RE1. All of which make-up the overall story arc for her character.i Or were you oblivious while you were daydreaming about takng her on shopping sprees and feeding her grapes and snuggling up to her vajayjay "in her panties?"
From the internet and for your edification:
A story arc (a contraction of "over-arcing storyline") is a sequence of episodes that puts characters through their paces in response to a single impetus; basically, an ongoing storyline. This can be a few episodes, an entire season, or even the focus of the entire series.
Arcs are not necessarily consecutive episodes. The story may reach a point where, although the arc is not completely resolved, it ceases to be of immediate concern to the characters, thus allowing the writers to intersperse non-arc episodes.
-----
So...having returning characters in a medium obviously ties it to the previous entry. As characters have "ongoing storylines."
If you still don't believe me. You should look up the Indiana Jones film series for more proof on the matter.
You really, really, really should learn how to support your arguments. Perhaps some brainstorming beforehand? That way your posts don't always make absolutely NO sense?
Ok, this is where your wrong. Who say's the plot needs to be over arching.
Again, look at the Indy series, each film is stand alone, and it's still amazing.
Now if I am incorrect in the 3 POTC films, obviously filmed and released within a short period of time (a far cry from your Indiana Jones example), not having the typical trilogy storyline, please inform me.
The first Pirates film was meant to be stand alone, but it has some ties to the second and third.
The second and third are like one big movie, dived into two. They are very much connected.
I think maybe your BRAIN doesn't understand the concept of "over-arcing." Or is it just me (and others on the THIA who disagree with your infinite wisdom) that have been taught the wrong meaning of said concept?
So I am assuming this fourth film to only have little connection to the last. Which will be good. AS over arching storyline are extremely overrated and are certainly not needed when a stand alone plot would do just fine.
Also, the Pirates series has a better storyline than RE series will ever have.
All this stemming from my general cluelessness about POTC. Wow.
But thanks for using your brain, and continuing to demonstrate to countless others how to improperly utilize a human's greatest asset. Maybe stick to hijacking other websites?

You talking about people other than yourself being incapable of logical thought (while obviously standing on a pedestal affirming your beaming intellect). It doesn't get more hypocritical than that...
A large number of your posts, have been dissected and shot down by myself and others as well.
It's opinions.
Kind of like how in your imaginary world, Jill does all of these deep, meaningful things in Raccoon City (beyond what's on the RE3 game disc) even though these things/events don't appear anywhere in the narrative of any official RE products?
What are you trying to say here? "Most writers?" What writers? Are you comparing video game writers to people who write screenplays? That's hardly fair. It's a broad spectrum to say "most writers" are better than "capcom." It's fucking stupid. Because in your mind, you're probably thinking of Academy Award winning screenwriters as opposed to people like Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer - two dipshits who keep writing and churning out festering turds like "Disaster Movie" and "Date Movie." I'd take the worst Capcom story (probably "Bionic Commando" [2009]) over those writers (Friedberg & Seltzer) anyday.
Well, if you are going to bring that up. Ill bring the writers of MGS up. Compare Hideo Kojima, and game writer, to those to idiots who do the *genre* Movie films.
Just cause they write for games, doesn't make them any worse than people who write screenplays.
I mean, do you play RPG's? Have you seen the insane amount of dialog and plot in your average RPG? Id say that's on par, or even higher than a screen writer, who only writes a story that is pre set in one direction, compared to writers who write out multiple storylines in all different directions.
And Capcom did keep creating story arcs for their characters, in their series, Resident Evil. If you have ever played Ratchet and Clank. You would know what I mean. There are two main arcs in the whole series. There is the original arc, of R&C1,2,3, and 4. And there is the sequel arc named "Future" Which consists of R&C5,6 and 7. And there is the PSP spin of story arc too. Not to mention that the R&C series really actually has about 6 or 7 story arcs. But mini ones. RE has a few different minor arcs, but only one major over arcing one really. And way to much focus on the least interesting one, which is Chris and Wesker's rivalry.
I mean, look at MGS, it has two main arcs. Big Boss's arc, and Solid Snakes arc, and now it seems Raiden is getting one too with Rising. Though the two main MGS arcs intermingle at points.
And what is with the constant "taking her on shopping sprees and feeding her grapes and snuggling up to her vajayjay" comments?
Where have I ever suggested a game be made about that?
So...having returning characters in a medium obviously ties it to the previous entry. As characters have "ongoing storylines."
I personally think a story arc about two humans, with a rivalry that spans an entire series. Is so fucking far out of place in a game meant to be about killing zombies it's just not funny. It has seriously taken RE off track. It should have ended in RE1. Wesker should have stayed dead.
Id rather it if RE was more like Silent Hill in it's story layout. Only SH1, and SH3 are connected in any major way. The rest are pretty much stand alone, but with connections still to the rest, but still, not following an overall character arc.
What? I'm really getting lost now. I'm pretty sure that series is NOT a good example of positively continuing a story arc. A large majority of people detested the 4th Indy film, and considered its treatment of the beloved characters (and the continuation of their arc) as sacrilege.
The film received mostly positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes reported that 76% of critics gave the film positive reviews, based on 239 reviews. The consensus was "Though the plot elements are certainly familiar, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull still delivers the thrills and Harrison Ford's return in the title role is more than welcome."[109] Metacritic reported the film had a score of 65 out of 100, indicating "generally favorable reviews", based on 40 reviews.[110] Yahoo! estimated an average rating of B from 15 reviews.[111] The Associated Press reported the film received a "respectful – though far from glowing – reception," saying that "some viewers at its first press screening loved it, some called it slick and enjoyable though formulaic, some said it was not worth the 19-year wait...," adding that J. Sperling Reich, who writes for FilmStew.com, said: "It really looked like they were going through the motions. It really looked like no one had their heart in it."[112] USA Today stated reviews were "mixed" and reviewers felt the "movie suffers from predictable plot points and cheesy special effects".[113] Roger Ebert gave the film 3.5 stars out of 4, a rating he also gave to The Last Crusade. Ebert argued that the only critical criterion for judging the latest film was comparing it to the previous three. He found it "same old, same old", but that was what "I want it to be."[114] James Berardinelli gave the film 2 stars out of 4, calling it "the most lifeless of the series" and "simply [not] a very good motion picture."[115]
It was nominated at the Saturn Awards for Best Science Fiction Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Costumes and Best Special Effects. It won Best Costumes.[132]
Just cause you didn't like it. Doesn't mean many others did. I personally was happy with the way the story went in the Indy films.
First of all, are we talking about Pirates of the Caribbean or are we talking about Indiana Jones? I was commenting on the former rather than the latter. My brain thus tells me that we should be focusing on the Caribbean TRILOGY. I assumed that there is an over-arcing storyline since many films nowadays that are filmed as a trilogy have....wait for it....over-arcing storylines!!!!!
(I assume that you are primarily speaking of RE in this case, since Capcom makes RE and this is an RE site.)
Okay, you are speaking about RE. So wait, this thread has suddenly devolved into: Indiana Jones & POTC are better than RE, even though those are two film franchises consisting of many hours of narrative compared to a video game series that is NOT known for it's strong story-telling abilities? I'm fucking confused.
Maybe stick to hijacking other websites?

You start calling JB out when he brings up other movie writers, and yet YOU intially started comparing not only a movie but video games. As JB said...your posts are so filled with contradictions its not even amusing to try and make sense of it any longer.sigpic

Greetings troll from down under!
I'm actually going to adhere to Darkmoon's warning (something you seem unable to do), but a few minor issues before I take this to your wall...where my comments will shortly thereafter disappear much like all other arguments that spill over onto your wall. Why is it so many people have issues with you? Has it finally boiled over that YOU are the cause of so many problems around here, rather than other people just picking on you?

I was just saying, that Pirates has a good story. You've never seen it, and asked how on earth it could have a good story. Maybe if you had been less of an ass in your first post. This wouldn't of happened.
"I know I am in the minority of thinking the first film (besides Depp) sucked ass"
"I saw the first film and was unimpressed. All the hype surrounding it was not warranted in my opinion. But, I do recognize that my tastes are different than those of other people."
Then I casually mentioned that I doubt a really good story could cover a film trilogy based on a Disney theme park attraction. And since you are so fond of aggregate scores all of the sudden, let's look at the tomatometer for the 3 films, in order: 79%, 54%, and 45%. So my doubt seems somewhat justified as the films kept getting worse and worse.
You are the one that responded negatively toward my opinion (#15), and tossed in other unnecessary bullshit that comes off as you taking potshots at the community. Perhaps if you had not been the one being an "ass," and just accepted my comments as "opinion," instead of diving in with flames spraying (#17), this thread could still be focused on POTC instead of being another example of YOU being the catalyst to arguments on this site.
I'll admit, at least you are consistent. I am just confused as to how, after seeing countless arguments involving you throughout your time on this site, are you still here? I've taken regular sabbaticals and each time I come back, you are STILL the problem.
And BTW, your last statement is so wrong it's funny. Did no one tell you it was my own site?

I'm really against this film since Elizabeth and Will won't appear. Unless they both appear in it along with Jack I won't see it and I won't enjoy it. The films had already became fairly shoddy anyway (even though I enjoy them) and I can't really see where they'd go with this fourth film since everything was pretty much wrapped up. There's creating new story/character arcs and then there's continuing a storyline that had come to a natural end.

missvalentine, I'm giving you an infraction for ignoring my warning. Because, as has been pointed out, you claimed to have missed it...an hour after I posted it. And then you went back and edited in a comment about missing it, rather than deleting the post as would make sense.
Everyone...I'm serious. Stop fucking around or I swear, I'm gonna throw bans like candy. I have no tolerance left for high school fucking drama.

It was before you then went back to edit your post to quote specifically where missvalentine insulted the entire website. Before, it was a run of the mill comment which is why I didn't post. Going back (after a moderator posted) to edit your post to single out that you agree with where a now banned member insulted the entire forum is a bit out of line. Just a friendly warning.Last edited by Alexia_Ashford; 09-17-2009, 04:37 PM.
