Indeed. At some point I started to wonder if it was a one season project, because every other season seemed disjointed.
No, they just weren't expecting the writers for Season 1 to quit suddenly during the Screenwriter's Guild strike. So they lost the amazing writers and got other people instead.
(as I knew the older ones were build on the Quake 3 engine.) Did they recycle old stuff? (Formats?) Did they use just the netcode? Did they lift stuff from the Doom 3 engine?
As far as I know, it was still based on the Quake 3 engine, however, how much of it has been left in is largely under question. Whatever it was, is probably a crucial part of the game, because engine licencing isnt cheap (Unreal 2.5, a modified version of UE2 went for about $500K a year or so ago, now its about 300K + somethingsomething for each additional platform). In my opinion, the netcode alone would be worth that price. However, its not just netcode. A critical sign of Quake 3 engine being used is the so called "strafe jumping" (basically a method of extending your jump distance) and 125/250 FPS "glitches" (where you can reach certain areas you normally wouldnt, if you set your FPS to those values). Now Im intriqued and Ill try to find something on it, haha.
And how can you not like Quake! Quake Live (a free, browser-based Quake 3 version) is singlehandedly the most demanding and skill-based FPS Ive ever played. 30 minutes of QL (or Q3) will exhaust you, both mentally and physically, haha
[EDIT] Google pretty much revealed what everyone else was saying- "a heavily modified Quake engine".

Canas, I heard about the show being hit by the Strike, but I never knew that the original writers left.

My oldest brother plays a lot of Quake Live when he's either training (or other idling-business) in EVE or not playing Professor Layton. Personally, I dodged returning to that party (for now)... although I did register to see how my poor laptop handled it (unfortunately, my laptop's CPU and GPU chugs on anything and everything. Cooling failure a-hoy.)
That's why the season finale of season... 3? Or 4? The one where (spoilers) Spoiler:
Sylar takes Nathan Petrelli's form when Matt gets in his head
was so good. For that one episode, they got the original writers back.
That actually was a pretty nice thing. But it would've been better if this had been done earlier (S2) and this was the chain of events that evt. lead to Nathan pushing the President into approving of the rounding up of those with abilities (evt. giving a Nathan with strange urges this perfect setup for acquiring new abilities for Sylar... booya! Lots of specials! Locked up! Drugged down! It's like a library!)
Actually, one of the better things to've been on Heroes in the post-S1 stuff was Kristen Bell as that one dude's daughter. Absolutely loved her character. Completely socially retarded (thanks to being daddy's little girl) and perfectly well equipped with a super power that has a classic weakness (gotta love the fact that throwing a bucket(?) of water on her put her in grain pain).
The worst thing they ever did was the glaring plot hole of Claire healing someone with her blood... both Noah and Nathan (If I remember correctly: bullet in the face and exploding man - aka. nuclear blast.) She could've probably saved a good few of the main chars that died, had they not just selectively ignored it all or at least given a good reason as for why she for some reason couldn't heal them (Like... only worked on Nathan 'cause they were blood related and Noah 'cause he was a non-special... and that they didn't let her heal Nathan when Sylar got to him 'cause we hate Nathan)
Also, what kind of dick move was that by Nathan when he didn't just go for somehow killing himself when Sylar took back his body again and Nathan finally (presumably) died/vanished? "Hey, bro! I'm gonna turn into Sylar soon... so I'll just let him get away and give him a head start 'n' all that!"

I loved Elle. I wish she hadn't given up her abilities (I think that's what happened anyway. Either that or she died, I forget XD), she could've had awesome potential.
As for Nathan, yeah. What the hell was that? If you know how dangerous Sylar can be, why would you distance yourself from him to let him come out? Seriously? Man, these writers... they're just bad.
Also, like I said in some other thread... I like Ali Larter. I loved Nikki and Jessica. But come on, they're really milking her talent with another sister.

If I remember correctly; She had this love thing with Sylar, and then Sylar suddenly in the midst of a romantic evening on the beach decided to slice her head open.

What the heck was the deal there? Did she get written off as dead 'cause she was filming the 3rd Resident Evil film and then suddenly became available again so they made her a new char or something?
^ I think the same thing is happening now (kinda). She's filming Afterlife, and Tracy is on hold (she is still there, via the graphic novels, and in some short scenes).
