  • Weird/Amazing... but True facts!!!

I just thought I'd start up a thread on posting in some Weird/Amazing, but True facts that you have heard of, or read about.

Here are some examples I found: -

    - A single human blood cell takes only 60 seconds to make a complete circuit of the body.

    - The liquid inside young coconuts can be used as substitute for blood plasma.

    - Want to see how your breath smells? Try this: Use a spoon and scrape the back of your tongue. Let it dry, then smell it. That's how your breath smells.

    Now that I've posted a few I've found let's see what you've heard/read about.

The fingerholes of an average bowling ball have more germs than a dog's butthole.

I knew there was a reason I hate bowling.

Beetles taste like apples, wasps like pine nuts, and worms like fried bacon.

Mel Blanc, who famously voiced the character of Bugs Bunny, was allergic to carrots.

Actress Kate Bosworth suffers from Heterochromia iridium, a condition that causes a person's eye color to be different from the other one (Hazel and blue). She was spared having to wear uncomfortable contact lenses throughout the making of the Superman movie because the director decided her odd eyes were perfect for her role as Lois Lane. Jane Seymour, Christopher Walken, and Alexander the Great also suffer(ed) from the same condition.

Shakespeare was the first to use insults about people's mothers. (yo momma, mother******, your mom is ___, etc.)

Shakespeare also created about 500 words we use today, or some form of them.

Ex. "Horn-mad" became "horny". You can guess what he meant when he was talking about one's horn.

Cola drinks are the most popular bottled drink in every city on Earth except one - Adelaide in South Australia. The most popular drink in Adelaide is Farmer's Union Iced Coffee.

The history of April Fool's Day is uncertain. But some believe that it began around 1582 in France.

An elephant raises it's trunk when it senses danger.

A mosquito is more likely to bite a blonde than a brunette. Mosquitos see heat given off in the form of C02, so the more C02 you emit, the more delicious you look. This means they prefer large people (not kids), pregnant women, people wearing cologne/perfume, and sweaty people / people breathing hard. So chill out. And make sure there's no stagnant water/pools/ponds near your house - that's where they breed.

Yawning is contagious - even thinking about yawning is enough. After reading this fact, there is a 50% chance you will yawn. Research shows that 11-week-old fetuses yawn. Yawns become contagious to people between the first and second years of life. When one person in a group yawns, over half of the people in the group will yawn within 5 minutes, and the rest will at least be tempted to yawn. Even animals yawn when they see another animal yawn. The average duration of a yawn is about 6 seconds, and guys yawn for longer than girls.

Believe it or not, you actually CAN'T see the Great Wall of China from Space!

You've probably seen this "fact" a bunch of times.

"The Great Wall of China is the only human-made object that can be seen from outer-space."

Turns out it's not even true. The first known publishing of this "fact" was back in 1938, long before anyone was traveling in space. Since then lots of people have gone into outer space and looked at the Earth and haven't found the Great Wall.

The Great Wall is huge (5500 miles long) but in order to be visible from far away it would also have to be very wide and distinct looking from the ground. The Great Wall is made of the same materials as the ground around it, so from space it looks the same as the ground.

Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei took some pictures of Earth from space where the Great Wall is supposed to be. As you can tell from the picture, the Great Wall is not visible.

On the other hand, you can see the pyramids of Giza from space. You can also see Minutemaid Park, the Toyota Center, and the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, TX.
