  • Your Favourite TV Series

I can't stop watching TV series at the moment. I'm currently watching X Files, Star Trek Voyager, I have yet to watch Twin Peaks, and I am getting seriously tempted to re-watch Battlestar Galactica (new one) again.

My top 5 would have to be:

    1. Battlestar Galactica
    2. Star Trek: Voyager
    3. X Files
    4. The Tudors
    5. Don't really have a fifth, if I had to pick.. Xena maybe?

I absolutely love Battlestar. I love how it takes a sci-fi setting and puts a very human face on it and it goes from a show about a war with the cylons, moving onto politics and the things we'd encounter if it actually happened, to religion. I think I've watched it about 4/5 times now. I think it has fantastic characters as well. My favourite is Six, but I also love characters like Starbuck and Saul Tigh because of the amount of character development they have.

I believe we have a favorite TV series thread somewhere, but I can't find it.

We have much in common, Alexia. I am delighted that you like The Tudors.

    Here is my list:

    1. Battlestar Galactica.
    2. The Tudors.
    3. Dexter.
    4. Caprica.
    5. X Files.

I haven't watched all of X Files. I would like to watch it again, which season do you recommend me to start on?

I'd say the first. They're all very good, but I've heard they get naff towards the last two seasons. I like how in the very first episode, the Cigarette Smoking Man is just sort of lingering in the background and you don't know who he is and he keeps appearing over the course of the show, until finally later in the show you find out who he really is and it's like "OHH, I REMEMBER HIM!". I've been loving the first season so far. The episodes are all so different. One reminded me of The Thing, another reminded me of The Mist. I've not seen Caprica, but I intend to at some point. I'm definitely going to watch the other spin-off they're doing about Adama's previous days in the military.

The Tudors is very good, and it gives me some perspective on my country's history. I liked going to the Tower of London earlier in the year and saw Henry's armour and stuff and it's the place Anne Boleyn was locked up before she was executed. There's a ruin near me where Lady Jane Grey lived (the one Bloody Mary deposed to get into power).

I couldn't find an old topic either, I just found "Recently seen shows".

1 - Firefly. There was no evil done like the day that was cancelled. And all should perish.

2 - BattleStar Galactica. A really good series. I did, however, find it so emotionally draining I couldn't watch it in anything but small chunks.

3 - Avatar: The Last Airbender. I recently watched this with my kids, because I heard it was good, and was shocked at how much I enjoyed it too. Usually, during this stuff, I tend to read, write or mess about on the laptop, but this time I put those things away.

4 - Babylon 5. That was a series that took advantage of it's airtime fully...

5 - Castle. Nathan Fillion is eternally awesome, but this is a nice little and quite amusing series too.

First and foremost, Twin Peaks and X-Files. Granted, the latter of which sort of went downhill in the later seasons in a phenomenon known simply as the Chris Carter Effect. I don't think they had any idea what the hell they were doing with the narrative, so in the end it just dragged on into a convoluted mess that rivals the Metal Gear Solid series in scope. That said, it's still a great example of quality science fiction.

Keeping in line with science fiction, I'm also a long serving fan of Star Trek. My personal favourites being TNG and DS9, though Voyager isn't bad either. DS9 started off being somewhat weak but it really flourished at around the fourth season when the Dominion War arc began to unfold. It also felt a lot more communal than TNG and VOY, with family and community being key themes throughout DS9.

To this day, Sisko remains my favourite captain. In my opinion, he's the most well rounded and fleshed out character. He's a war hero, a single parent who has had to raise his son by himself, he also had the unpleasant job of watching over a backwater station populated by many different species and cultures, plus he had to deal with the Dominion and the stresses that come with being a religious icon.

I'd like to give an honourable mention to Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, probably the best piece of television to come out of the BBC in years. They managed to achieve in five series what Lost failed to do in over ten, taking into account that each series of the LoM/AtA saga was a scant eight episodes in duration.

          Oh, and Quantum Leap.

Oh my, a top five? So many TV shows I have seen and so many that had their great strengths and weaknesses. Might as well do a list!

            1. Battlestar Galactica - I remember when the pilot aired on Skyone and how I feel in love with the reimagined series. Me and my best friend since childhood loved the original series and doing so made us respect and love this more because of how brilliant Ronald D Moore did a job on bringing this epic sci fi back.

            2. Lost - In retrospect, looking back on lost now makes me laugh at how much filler and many little holes this series had when you look at the big picture. But it was the journey with the characters of the show that is still why it's one of the best shows I have seen. And who can't forget Ben Linus (Michael Emerson).

            3. The Walking Dead - I loved the comic and I fell in love with the show. Best Zombie entertainment that has done justice on the telyvision out of the 21st century yet.

            4. Breaking Bad - This has probably to be the best show I will say for its characters alone. You've got to feel sorry for Walter White and Jesse Pinkman.

            5. Star Trek: The Next Generation - Go and watch it if you've not seen it!

Dexter was going to be on the list but with how fucked up the show's direction is going now, and how poor the fifth series was, it is not out of my list and I no longer have interest in seeing this show being stale with the most baffled plot I have come across. Series one to three (and most of four) were pretty damn good.

Other deserved nominations: Star Trek: Voyager and Deep Space Nine.

            Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes.

            Doctor Who.

The Room (shot mini series from sci fi)

Quantum Leap (Seeing Mr Spencer reminded me of this and remember when I watched the series after my mum loving this show and had the collection)

            Sherlok.

Speaking of comedy, I'd like to throw in Alan Partridge. Namely because Steve Coogan is a comedy genius, far superior to Ricky Gervais whose ego has become as bloated as himself. I enjoy my British comedy, such as Spaced, Peep Show and Phoenix Nights. I'm also partial to some American comedy, of which I happily include Arrested Development. Fantastic show.

Unrelated, I've recently been watching Lie To Me. Ah, Tim Roth.

There will be no finer comedy from such British classics as Red Dwaf, Dad's Army, Young Ones, Steptoe and Son, Bottom, Love Thy Neibour, Yes Minister, Only fools and horses, the list can go on. Comedy was at its prime in England.

I absolutely love Lost but hate how it ended. I also like Battlestar Galactice. I've watched every single episode!

I'm the exact opposite. I can't watch it in anything but huge chunks because each episode makes me want to watch more.
