  • The great cyber war?

Ok...so the FBI shut down Mega-Upload today...in retaliation, anonymous the world wide cyber hacker group has responded by shutting down 40+ websites across the world that are all SOPA supporters. Including:

-Chris Dodds personal site(piece of shit pushing SOPA in congress)
    - the FBI's site
    - MPAA sites
    - RIAA sites
    - Copyrights.gov
    - Hadopi.fr (french SOPA)

I cant help but wonder if this is going to be the first step in a real Cyber war? There is so much bullshit going on in the US government regarding the internet that this was bound to happen, I'm really surprised that the FBI actually took down Megaupload.

    This does not bode well.

Chris Dodds is the one fueling SOPA and promoting the shit out of it.

What the hell?... I guess Youtube is next?

Chris Dodd needs to be locked up in Jail for the rest of his life, fuckers already 'legally' ripped off like a 100 million from the country when he was senator back in 2008. real scumbag bastard.

I had several files on megaupload. I recently uploaded them there to save space on my HDD. It was only temporary... now I can't get them back? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

        Son of a bitch! LOL

I'm not going to lie, Anonymous has pissed me off royally in the past namely with the whole Playstation fiasco because it involved my bank account getting compromised; however, this situation I support their endeavors. I think the United States government is becoming too involved with the internet, and just needs to leave it alone. If something is not broken, do not fix it. I realize the primary complaint involves copyrighted material and everyone from musicians to porn stars are losing out. Though part of my argument to them is: You were well aware of this problem before you entered the industry (of course, I know this wasn't as prevalent years ago, so it doesn't influence everyone in the same way). Every industry has issues, and people are always going to find a way around the barriers. Furthermore, if you are so concerned about people stealing your work and downloading it for free, stop making future works. Stick it to society, and say if you're not going to pay for my talent, then I'm not going to use it. I think we could all do without a few celebrities that are already legions past arrogant in the thought that the world cannot get on without them.

Ultimately, I don't think Anonymous will get too far with this simply because it's going to be a back and forth of who is the better hacker. I could be wrong; I don't know how devoted they are to the cause. I also don't see the United States government basically caving in what will probably be viewed as a threat to national security and will revamp the War on Terrorism. I'm not saying the internet does not need any form of policing, but I think in the United States, we have more pertinent issues than the internet right now. Fix the bigger problems, and then move onto these more trivial matters.

The world just needs to wake up and come to the realization that the internet cannot be controlled. It has grown beyond that point.

A shame for MegaUpload though; I only used the site a few times, but it seemed like a decent service. I guess the similar sites like RapidShare, Filestube, Filesonic, and Fileserve will fall next. I will be interested to see how this all turns out.

What absolute bullshit. Do they believe they can really sap the freedom of everyone and control the internet?
MegaUpload was a site I used ALOT for passing around my personal files between friends and even some work was put up onto it.
I can't believe they've gone to that extent, it's just wrong and immoral.
Course, it proves what they mean, if any site hosts ANYTHING copyright infringing then the entire site gets pulled down.
What bullshit, I can't believe this has happened.

SOPA and PIPA are down, but congress had this up their sleeves the whole time. The real battle begins now.

All they want is to spy on us. These people are so paranoid about what's going on in the Internet and they don't even have the slightest clue on how to use the Internet or any techs. The Congress is just afraid of an upcoming attack or of losing their useless money.

Wow, I love how everything falls onto "protecting the children." To me, it really isn't the government's job to monitor a child's online activity, and with all the blocking software out there, isn't that enough for parents to ensure their child isn't accessing porn? It is the job of the parent to monitor what their child does on the internet. It isn't too big of an issues in schools I don't think because anything deemed offensive or "uneducational" is blocked off. As I recall, I could never get onto reHorror while at high school; point being, I know the software is out there to protect children at school (and at home if parents choose to put this on their computers).

It is the sort of ignorance that is really making me hate the United States; everyday we move a bit away from our freedoms, and it is really quite sickening.

It is impossible to censor the internet, but please, feel free Congress/US Government. I am interested to see the attempts.

That was actually fairly interesting and informative. I did like their parallel about the recipe.

                        You pay for cooking lessons.
You show your friend how to do it for free.
You have committed copyright infringement by giving away intellectual property for free.

I see no difference aside from the fact that a computer is involved. Ultimately, I don't see these bills/treaties coming into effect simply because of the uproar it will create. Though surprisingly, there isn't as much outrage as I would have expected. At least not that I've seen anyway. People seem somewhat passive about this, and I guess don't see it as a threat.

Also, FileServe and FileSonic have basically committed suicide by only allowing you to download files that you have put onto the server. There is no way of sharing your file even if it is legitimate.

Only thing I can think of that we can do is to stop supporting the entertainment industry. Dont go see any movies, buy any dvds, watch tv, buy music, etc.

It'd take a world wide effort to do though, people love their entertainment, but the only way to fight back is to hurt them where it counts, their wallets.
