Resident Evil 2 Speed Run Contest: Leon A

Okay, so here is the thrill. Leon A scenario as fast as possible.

Rules [not locked, just my first initial idea, make suggestions]:
1. Must have video in youtube. (Faster you play; less upload)
2. No cheats at all (and no infinite rockets by the game and so on)
3. Emulator of course can be used with fraps.
4. Can use game saves if you wan't [not quick saves by emu though]
5 Both Auto or Manual Aim are allowed [like that changes much]
6. On 10th January 2013 we will check the results [enough time frame to perfect this speedrun].
7. Game Settings:
ONLY PSX VERSION ALLOWED! AND ONLY NTSC. [go cry me a river if you only have a PAL, we will not do a super hyper time conversion thingy]

Bring it on ! But i have my doubts about uploading the video because of my lame ass slow connection, could i at least post the results image when i finish the game ?
Edit: okay i borrowed my brother's samsung phone with HD camera and i'm ready to roll !
One more thing, which version are we allowed to play with ?, cuz i've only got the psn version on my ps3 HDD !
Edit2: After 30min of gameplay, the stupid camera stopped recording due to limited space, so i'm gonna start over with ePSXe FRAPS instead !

The quality is not essential here, i am sure you [we] can sqeeze the size of avi to a very small. You could use youtube upload-stream combination though. And that even after playing it and recording it via webcam from computer screen. But I guess picture is also okay. but 23 min complete time screenshot will be questionable for sure....


I am currently deviding Leon A to some sections and finding best route/strategy passing as fast as possible. Probably killing only enemies who might slow down. The only target here is the speed....

I'm not very good at speedruns. I think my fastest time on RE 2 was like 2 hours and 20 minutes.

I think any version of Resident Evil 2 goes as long as it is not that pc version where you can cut door animation and cutscenes.

Just normal mode and start Leon A. I don't think there are any differences between 'normal' resident evil 2 and dual shock as long as normal gameplay mode is selected. I am gonna do on dual shock.

It is worthy to mention your game version [pal/ntsc] and is it dual shock, psx, gamecube or whatever

You never know. Just plan your path. practice. practice by heart. Use itembox as little as possible. And you might score very impressively. Marked your name.

Please add a rule for PAL gamers. PAL times shoukd be multiplied by (5/6) as the game runs slower due to the 30fps rather than 25. From memory I used to get 1:17ish

And people using a JP copy should play arrange mode as that uses US&PAL enemy and item placements

That way everyone's playing the same game and times can be compared too

Oh, my version is the Dual Shock PSX NTSC-U, running on ePSXe, using a dual shock PS2 controller.

Just did a preliminary run today. 1 hour 28 minutes ... oof. Need practice. Had too much ammo by end game. Maybe need to skim down the amount of pick-ups I acquire.

I've got A A in 1:24:00 with no saves or aids bear in mind that i was playing using the keyboard but without realizing that fraps wasn't active (-_-)during the whole gameplay session but it was fun while it lasted, therefore i'm willing to try again later cuz i'm not in the mood to do it now and my back hurt a lot from sitting down in front of the pc !
I have a tip for you guys, when you encounter the two spiders in the canal's manhole, ignore the first one on the wall and finish off the one on the ground because there is a huge chance it will poison you causing a huge delay in your speed run which explains the extra 4 minutes in my run ! also use the 3 burst handgun to knock zombies on the ground giving the chance to escape from them fast, when you reach the laboratory use the B.O.W gas to weaken the enemies especially those goddamn lickers and ignore the air shaft that leads to the locked room with the two enhanced lickers.

I avoid those spiders (and all spiders in the game). They're a waste of ammo. I don't think I've ever been poisoned by them. If you run at them either a little to the left or the right, they shouldn't spray poison. And by the time you get the corner, you''ll be close enough that it will want to stick it's fangs out and run at you, but by that point, you'll have already run past it.

My obvious tips, skip the armory and any extraneous out-of-the-way ammo pick ups along the way.

Are you sure about the armory, that side pack gives you more space which mean lesser need to drop items in the box, also avoid the dark storeroom where you have to light up the lamps to pick the shotgun shells and magnum bullets which is a huge waste of time, also marvin add the rule of using "auto aim" or "manual aim"
Edit: which plugin is better, pete's d3d driver 1.7.7 or pete's openGL2 2.29 ?
Edit2: I've recorded 3 min of gameplay and its already taken 2gb of size, any tips to reduce size during recording with fraps ?

You could try to use Freez Screen VideoCapture software, it makes very small videos. I am planning to use it on my own. But I am still testing it.
Didn't fraps had this configuring options for quality of recording. I do remember I had to convert it a lot.
I updated your status to canceled, but TRY AGAIN! Really!
Added rule for Manual Aim, as in many cases this is better in my opinion and Auto Aim is basically to be considered as CHEAT (in game)
I recommend gpuBlade plugin for epsxe, its amazing. But Pete Software emulated plugin is my favorite in his selection.
Above all this I really recommend to play this speedrun (if choosing emulation way) with psx 1.13 emulator (http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com/). It's my favorite emulator. Just configure bios and keyboard (or controller). It's da best for Resident Evil PSX games. No problems detected so far.

I am using ACME playstation 1 to 1 copy usb controller.
