Nothing in the series prevents horror from taking central stage again. Bioterrorism? Okay, change the angle from being a hardass soldier fighting monsters to some poor civilian bastard trying to survive them. You're also not bound by contract to use any older characters. Jill? Let's just say she retired after BH5. Chris? Stayed on for a bit, then retired. Jake hopefully died when a backflip went tragically wrong.
Tone down the budgets and make them smaller-scale horror-focused games with new characters in the same universe and timeline, if you really need to. There is absolutely no need to piss away 16 years of work on one of the most viable and consistent fictional universes in the industry.

To be fair, the story for the Castle version of BH4 was pretty damn good and tied things up for the series up until that point rather nicely, while leaving space to continue on. The series probably wouldn't have lasted as long as it has, though.PROJECT Umbrella - The BIOHAZARD/RESIDENT EVIL Compendium

Oh, it's stupidly easy to make a semi-decent for a horror game that negates such things as the BSAA or the t-virus vaccine. Set it in a remote region with communication issues (perfect place for a top secret lab, really) or some other, equally inaccessible location or simply make the conflict too big for the BSAA to stop and it's done.
However, it doesn't matter how easy it is to do because it will always, always be secondary to back flipping ninja cops, boulder punching and broken condom bastards named Jake (thanks for that one, Wrathborne).
My problem is reboot or continuation, as long as Capcom is running after Call of Modern Battlefield 9 plays with there pants off screaming, 'But we can do action too!' the games are going to be naff. You'd think after RE5, RE6 and ORC they'd reconsider...but how long have people been complaining bitterly about the Capcom standard 'Soon after release, we'll release a new version with stuff the original buyers have to re-buy the game for!' business strategy? Honestly, I don't believe that interview any more than the ones saying ORC was really keeping the horror theme or RE6 was going back to the horror roots.

I think they had the right idea with keeping the canon main series more like Revelations while keeping a non-canon parallel series more like Operation Raccoon City. However, that strategy would probably weaken the brand.PROJECT Umbrella - The BIOHAZARD/RESIDENT EVIL Compendium

Well from the replies here its obvious more people are concerned about the convoluted plotlines and iconic characters and not having their classic collector's items become irrelevant due to a possible reboot, than ever seeing Survival Horror in the actual gameplay.
LOL It figures... that's what most fans care about these days.
IMO Capcom should focus on the gameplay not the silly-ass plotlines and characters. Because we already had at least 2 games use up the same old characters and similar plotlines. And yet the Survival Horror was nowhere to be found in the gameplay itself.
You see, making up a horror story or setting is one thing. But quite another is the survival element. Which will always be found on the gameplay itself. That is something that is experience based. Meaning that you have to live it/experience it. Not shown through cutscenes, long-winded exposition or character's motivations or whatever passes for a story these days.
Trying to get back to RE's roots by way of the characters or trying to regurgitate more of the same old stories is not going to take us there. Capcom has already tried that with RE5 and RE6. But because they were focusing the gameplay on being actiony and more of a shooter, they killed any chances of the SURVIVAL element ever surfacing in them.
If what most want is a reboot in terms of plotlines, then fuck it. Might as well not happen at all and it will be a useless endeavor.
Luckily, Masachika Kawata gave enough hints that he was talking about gameplay. Both by mentioning an open world type of game, and by using Revelations as the type of game they are looking closely to possibly base the future entries in the series on.Stuff to remember: Avoid forums if you're having a bad day.

The plots are fine and are not the reason Survival Horror isn't around. They accommodate the gameplay, not the other way around. The only plot that has actually proven to be a bit fucked is BH6, but that was a problem mostly caused by Eiichiro Sasaki being a complete nonce. I agree that some characters should be given a rest, though.
Try playing Metal Gear Solid if you want something genuinely convoluted. There's nothing wrong with the plot in the BIO series. The plot in the games usually suffers because things are cut to help the flow of the gameplay, which is why they release so much additional material to add clarity.PROJECT Umbrella - The BIOHAZARD/RESIDENT EVIL Compendium

The plots are irrelevant in the sense that they can reboot the shit our of them (using new characters and settings), but if the survival element is still missing from the gameplay, then we will get the same old results as RE5 and RE6.
That is, we will still have games that have convoluted plotlines (or even well written ones) and more fugitives from a fashion runway as characters, but no actual SURVIVAL in the gameplay.
Trying to reboot the series by way of doing some fine writing, translations and giving us more fine details about the characters, will be alright to fanfiction writers, fan-art artists and cosplayers. But if the gameplay is more of the same (they actually sold us RE6 as being MORE of what was in RE5), they we'll just be going in circles and no actual reboot will be performed. And more importantly, the SURVIVAL element will still be missing from the games.
But like I said, I believe Kawata was talking about a gameplay reboot. He even hinted as much, with what he said to IGN.Stuff to remember: Avoid forums if you're having a bad day.

This is mainly the reason why the series needs so desperately a reboot. You keep seeing more of these insane designs that are intended to top the previous ones. It works nicely for a series such as Devil May Cry, but it feels terrible in something like BH. Dino Crisis committed the same mistake with the alterations to the gameplay style in the second game and it was a blow to the nuts of the fans of the first game, because Dinosaurs were so intimidating in the first one. Take it one on one with an handgun, doable. Take two of them with a shotgun, holy shit. Take three of them without a grenade launcher, you're literally fucked. Enter Dino Crisis 2 and you're blowing hordes of them across the screen. BH took a little bit longer to get there, but eventually made the same mistake.

In all honesty I don't see them answering any questions you've brought up Newsbot.
Revealing Umbrellas rival corporations, Alex Wesker, or Tricell, they may end up putting out a supplement book but in game, I doubt it.
They haven't shown any real interest in pursuing these story concepts and its likely not to happen. If they do the full reboot they have a huge plotline they can still follow and strengthen the series narrative among other things.
Sorry to disagree with ya dude, I know you want them to finish up the story arc, but I dont see them doing that. If they did, I dont see them doing a decent job at it either.Last edited by Wrathborne; 02-01-2013, 04:06 PM.

Gameplay should be at the core, first and foremost. Anything plot-related should be molded around the gameplay, not the other way around.

It just looks too far fetched, to the point where you got to ask if what you're fighting is massively huge but that is inversely proportional to the size of its brain, or if these antagonists have their abilities dumbed down for the sake of giving the main character at chance at fighting it. Because we sure aren't playing as super-humans yet.Last edited by Det. Beauregard; 02-01-2013, 04:12 PM.Mass production? Ridiculous!
