  • The puzzles: anyone else find them lackluster?

I've been on a romp of sorts lately, playing resident evil and silent hill. One thing I notice is how...mundane and unsubstantial the puzzles are in resident evil. In silent hill, I've had to decipher riddles, know the intricate works of Shakespeare, or pay attention to the environment in order to detect subtle hints. In resident evil, its either in a note or the answer is obvious.

What perplexes me, is that I see people clamoring together to support a return of these "puzzles", when really, they feel like filler. Maybe I'm just not so impressed with these minor distractions from the action of resident evil, but is it so much as to ask for a puzzle which requires actual thinking?

    RE3 had some great puzzles.

I think puzzles break up the mundane monotony of some segments which drag. So I am all for the puzzles. What I want to see is the Team needs to make some challenging puzzles. Something hard.

In RE3, there's the computer puzzle.
In Code Veronica, there's the cube puzzle.
In Resident Evil Outbreak, there's the cuckoo puzzle.

These are some of the hardest puzzles I've ever dealt with.
It's not like Silent Hill also has a lot of super smart puzzles.

In SH1 for example, the only one which I felt it was hard was the piano puzzle. The rest was extremelly easy. For example: Remembering an order of colors (Alchemilla Hospital), Entering the first letter of each name on a list nearby (Nowhere), Entering the number of how much legs and arms a creature in a painting has (Nowhere).

Some weren't as good as others, but at least we had puzzles back then.

That piano puzzle was a real pain in the ass, i had to buy a walkthrough to solve this freaking puzzle, man that reminds me of the good old times when RE and SH used to be really challenging games !

I miss puzzles too - although some of them now seem easy as I've grown older hehe

I'd rather have puzzles than just flipping a switch or something though.

I thought RE3 had some really annoying puzzles. Thinking back how did anything get done with a town set up like that ya know? Lol

Puzzles like the one's in Silent Hill wouldn't fit in with Resident Evil, hence why there completely different games. Longer more cryptic puzzles fit in with the whole atmosphere of Silent Hill as it was a more slow paced, exploration type game.
The puzzles in the mansion will always be my favourite as they started the whole thing off but that water sample puzzle in 3 was an absolute nightmare

It depends on what people consider as a "good puzzle". RE3 has some mathematical skill puzzles, but nothing really about the use of logic and observation.

In my opinion, the best are probably in RECV and RE remake. A good puzzle for me is something that demands observation, reasoning, analysis of the clues and items you have and surroundings, rather than getting stucked during minutes in front of the same panel trying to figure out the right combination, probably "riddle" is a better word than puzzle to describe what I want to see in games.

It´s true that some RE puzzles are very stupid, because Capcom tends to underestimate our intelligence (the metric indicator from RE6 is a good proof), but some others are very good and may give troubles in a first play. Certainly Silent Hill has harder puzzles, but a puzzle that demands good Shakespeare knowledge like that one from SH3 is a bit out of place, fortunatelly some SH has an option to adjust puzzle dificulty level, that´s pretty good for replays.

The only hint the computer puzzle gives to you is "The password has to be something you could easily remember".
The music box puzzle requires observation (kinda), since you have to distinguish the music notes from bad to good.
