The original Dino Crisis, now that game had some good puzzles, and I've sometimes wished that the RE-puzzles could've been on par with the DC-puzzles.

The puzzles: anyone else find them lackluster?

I don't understand how puzzles can be a problem in RE, or even in general. I want to think a little bit when I play a game, not to shoot endlessly and stupidly during the whole experience. It's something RE5 lacked severely, same goes for RE6 to an extent (I did, however, liked Ada's puzzles). I also think that puzzles contribute to the pacing of the game because it offers relief between action sequences. Therefore, the action becomes more engaging and memorable.
But, yeah, the only problem would be the difficulty. They aren't very challenging, especially in RE2 and RE4. CV and RE3 had some nice puzzles, though.

And pratically all RE3 puzzles are about the use of logic and observation. The gemstones puzzle and the water treatment puzzle are precisely about observation and logic.Last edited by Grem; 05-29-2013, 05:36 PM.

Although those puzzles are obviously better than nothing, I would prefer more complex and non-static puzzles on a future RE, involving investigation, physical interaction, moving between different rooms, and also traps that can put a player in trouble if the puzzle fails.Last edited by Lanzagranadas; 05-29-2013, 09:43 PM.

Like the clock puzzle, hospital puzzle, etc. Those were pretty hard for first time players.
But i agree, Silent Hill puzzles are great. (Excluding god awful downpour and book of memories).
Though book of memories, I agree, was crap. Homecoming was only marginally better.

Yes, it had some technical issues, but the puzzles actually got fairly good, I especially liked the puzzle in the side quest which involved a murdered family. But besides that, I especially loved the atmosphere and narrative, not to mention the creative, yet classic way that endings were decided. To me, the top 3 silent hills are: shattered memories, downpour, and 2.

Honestly, I thought the gameplay was one of the better ones of the series. It had the running of shattered memories, combat that took the aspects of four and homecoming combat, and a better designed weapon-breaking system. Your hammer broke? Run, find a knife or plank. Getting surrounded by the weeping bats? Run, separate them, and take them out one at a time.
For the framerate, I only had issues in certain transition areas, but never had any issues during exploration of the city, environments, or such. Then again, I played on the Xbox so maybe the ps3 had more issues, but they did put out a patch later which helped some.
As for the voice acting, I disagree. I found it to be one of the better examples of voice acting from this series. While shattered memories remains the best, with three at second, downpour is still better than most of the series in that regard. Take 2: its voice acting was stilted, with Mary/Maria being the best among them. 1: Cybill is the best honestly, 4: Walter and Richard, etc. with Murphy, you could tell the emotions brewing in him and how his past had affected him. Anna, frank, Sewell, etc. all had good voice acting in my mind.
As for the puzzles, while it isn't the best of the series in that regard, it does have a puzzle difficulty setting which helps in that regard, but on normal it isn't anything to really talk about.Last edited by Drake; 05-30-2013, 12:38 AM.
