I don't know if anyone else here has been into a real science lab, but the labs in RE1.5 / RE2 are very unrealistic.

Why don't people care about this like they do the RPD?

People complain about the RPD because it doesn't look at all like one and many bits of it smells a little too much like the RE1 mansion. As for the laboratory, while it's not exactly the most realistic structure ever made, it does make some sense as a lab and it also gives the idea of a highly technological place where weird experiments are being carried on.

Maybe because they are based like a typical lab found in your average sci-if film perhaps? Or people maybe just overlook it because of the fantasy nature of the work being performed in them.

Aside from the bathroom problem I fail to see people think the R.P.D is unrealistic.

I never complained about the RPD. It was explained a while ago that the building was initially an art musseum and that a lot of artworks were kept in the place to satisfy chief Irons´ twisted taste. That´s why it doesn´t look like a normal police department.

People complaining about the retail RPD's general design/layout needs to get out a bit more often. (Heck, going by what we now know about 1.5; the RPD there is totally a questionable mess - considering the fact that, unlike the retrofit museum of RE2, 1.5's RPD is apparently built for its purpose ... like the equally stupid labs that only gets a pass from people 'cause of the "unknown" factor)

I wonder if the R.P.D. had other stations in the city. The actual station we see is woefully inadequate in almost every way, but this is really a consequence of trying to design interesting areas in a relatively short time. Realism isn't a priority.

Every game in the series is "rushed" to some extent in one area or another. There was meant to be more to the mansion and laboratory in BH1, for example.

                    A police station is not a jail/prison.

Looking at the initial movie resident evil 3, I thought there were 2 in raccoon city, the RPD before which we all know is that we have explored and the other RPD
                      special forces and SWAT.

Of the several I've been in (from pursuing a career as an officer at one point, not misconduct :p) all of them resemble the 1.5 station over the RE2 one. If they felt they had to redesign it (which I believe it wasn't needed) so be it, but using an art museum felt like a cop out (no pun intended) to design a mansion environment similar to RE1.

Personally I feel the reason they chose the mansion style was to have an easier time hiding puzzles and creating a labyrinth, and felt a museum more suited for that than a modern, casual building. This makes sense considering how quickly they wanted to get the game out and have a solid framework for their new ideas. "If it ain't broke don't fix it." From my perspective RE3 is the perfect execution of the ideas and intentions originally set forth in 1.5 but failed to achieve in Mikami and Kamiya's eyes.

I also feel the museum style truly aided to the gameplay and although the 1.5 environments looked eerie they did in fact look very boring to play on.

I would personally say it's less the layout and more so the overall aesthetic of it that people refer to when they say that the RPD looked more realistic in 1.5. Sure the overall layout doesn't make much sense but when you look at it, it's more like an office building. A small reception area with seating, low roof, etc. as opposed to a gigantic hall with a reception desk hidden behind a statue.

Many streets from RE3 are not realistic either, they look more like narrow corridors rather than real streets, but it´s all for the sake of gameplay.
