Mortal Kombat: Legacy creator wants to try his hand at Resident Evil.

In a interview with Kotaku about the up and coming season 2 of Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kevin Tancharoen revealed his interest at taking on Resident Evil in a more horror focused form rather then as he calls Anderson's movies "action spectacles".

Tancharoen: Another franchise I always wanted to redo in a real grounded and just terrifying way is Resident Evil. Because the movies that are currently out right now are action spectacles. I want to make the horror movie version.

Kotaku: The psychological kind.

Tancharoen: Exactly. I want to do the really dark, twisted, scary-as-hell version of Resident Evil. I think it would be great. Would they let anybody re-adapt Resident Evil right now, though? Absolutely not. That franchise makes way too much money for anyone to touch it. But I would love to see a version like that.

I wouldn't mind an animated Resident Evil series. I'd prefer it to be Japanese instead of American though. At this point anybody can do the movies better than Anderson.

I enjoyed the Legacy season although I had mixed feelings about it, but I'm unsure if he would do the Bio Hazard series justice. I had a similar conversation tonight with a friend about if they made a Bio Hazard 2 movie true to the game, how great it would be (for us, anyway). The movies evolved into back flips and effects and it just became ridiculous. If it were to happen by this guy, then I think a web series would be the best route. But over all I agree with News Bot, I don't think the Western approach works. Get it back to what it was originally about; one person or a couple with hardly any ammunition and a plethora of horrible zombies and mutations waiting to kill them, with a fantastic story unfolding throughout, with mysteries and plot twists. Portray that fear and adventure of the unknown, and at least keep it tight to the game if possible. Maybe a few episodes covering the more famous parts of the games each time, like a boss fight or a character interaction. I know it could be done.

The movies are nothing but poorly made action films with "Resident Evil" name slapped on them. Funny how Resident Evil is regarded as one of the scariest video games of all time, yet the movies are regarded as... complete crap.

It'd be interesting to see what this guy could do. Whatever it is, it will sure be a hell of a lot better than Anderson's films since he seems to actually know that Resident Evil is about -- horror.

Western execution has always been even worse, so that's not really valid. So far Japan has only really dropped the ball on one game (BH6).

japanese horror films i feel are too stylized and not brutal enough to keep in theme with the old games.

and when you guys say western, i think you are referring to hollywood. the first resident evil was just like an average american b-movie.

The movie? Definitely. The game? Absolutely fuck no. Goofy localization is a Western fuck-up, not a Japanese fuck-up. Just another reason why Western elements should stay out of the series. They've never contributed anything of any value.

dude, i have been collecting b/gore movies my whole life. the first RE movie was not them at all. at all.

b-movies take place in real locations, like a big dusty house or the woods, they cannot afford anything else. they have alot of gory violence right from the beginning. and the acting is identical to the first resident evil.
comparing any anderson movie to a b-movie makes me want to throw up. like you just insulted my childhood.

im talking old school SOV b-movies, not that over-produced soulless trash that gets played on TV.

i understand your confusion, but not all american films follow the hollywood/syfy formula. i could give a list, but its usually pointless.

Back when the first Resident Evil movie came out I thought it was a complete fail, but looking at it 10 years later and reading its script I tend to be less critical about it, it was actually not so bad. At least from the point of how it was planned. All those game or "Alice in Wonderland" references were kinda neat, and not so annoyingly "in your face" as every sequel that came out after that.

Still not as well executed as something like RE1 back in the day. Maybe I should phrase it as nowadays Japan's execution is bad.

And in RE5 you had stupid shit like a cargo plane carrying a virus that'd turn the majority of the world in tentacle monsters, which then crashes down at the top of a vulcano where you have your final fight.
