  • ^ Clunky would be my guess. Speaking of clunky, that weird close-but-closer concept also reminds me also like what the early version of Silent Hill Origins was like... thankfully they changed that back to a mixed 3rd person moving/fixed camera system. It's a good example of why certain 'horror' style doesn't suit the over the shoulder idea depending on the style you want to show.

Hmmm... mods are one thing, designing the game around it is another. You have to consider all events from both systems. Speed of modern gameplay is another issue. Most of the RE4 onward titles play a lot faster and it makes operating with fixed angles an issue when enemies can close in on you faster than you expect because they're out of frame one second and in your face the next.

It's like the hidden angle mode in Lost in Nightmares. While most people liked the easter egg... I think everyone knows why it stops when the characters leave the first mansion area - those controls with those angles wouldn't have worked for the pace RE5's controls, gunplay, and enemies were at. The one enemy that can appear in the harder difficulty modes will attest to that.

    • I can't find any footage of that version of SH:O, do you have a link?

As for the dual third person / fix angles, I'm with Rombie on this. Time is precious enough when you're trying to make one good game. UC123, did you ever play Cold Fear?

I would love to see a big SH try out fixed & tracking cameras. There's a sense of intimacy and realistic pace that you lose in third and first person games. Technically, you could even go one step further than just pre-rendering the backgrounds as images, and pre-render them as G-Buffers, along with light bounce & shadow info, have alot of the small objects rendered and react in real time and then light & anti-alias the whole thing together dynamically.

        Certainly:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

The finished game, in case you didn't play it, mostly stuck to the mixture of fixed and pre-railed moving cameras akin to the original PS title in the end. While Origins was not a great sequel, the camera choice wasn't an issue in so much that they stuck with the standard of the series at the time rather than going with a different choice. Combat was slightly clunkier on the PSP... no idea how it changed for the PS2 version.

        • It was the same, though a bit easier due to the controller. Also looked quite good, better than the psp and like the usual high standards of the console silent hills.
Also, the camera change was due to the closing of climax usa, who were the original developers. It switched to the main climax studios in Europe.

I remember hearing it looked good on the PS2. I finished the PSP version, and by then I had a PS3 so I never picked it up for PS2.

As for the change - I am fairly certain it was the other way around... because I specifically remember the reports of it being moved to the UK before announcements that the US office closed in October 2006... I certainly know at least the game was moved to the European branch before the complete closure because of engine issues, game direction, and people weren't happy with it from an article I remember on Edge because of this weird comedy quote related to the TV show Scrubs I've never forgotten (what a weird combo that idea is - I found a web archive posted below). I can only assume that later the US branch no longer had any work to do, they shut it down because of numerous factors including SHO going to the UK. Given the engine issues and design problems, I'm not surprised they went with a more traditional design style.

To understand the origin of Shattered Memories, you have to go right back to Silent Hill: Origins on PSP in 2007. It was the game that convinced Konami that the Portsmouth-based studio represented a safe pair of hands. It also gave Sam Barlow and his team a chance to save the day. Initially, Origins was being developed at Climax LA in Santa Monica, but it was a troubled project. After problems with the engine and a confused high-level vision for the game, Barlow’s UK team were drafted in to pick up the pieces.

“It was bizarre,” says the designer of the game they inherited. “It was supposed to be a dark comedy and, at some point, someone said Scrubs was [the inspiration]! We pushed back and said, ‘Look, if this goes out, it will be a disaster. There’s a hardcore fanbase [of Silent Hill players].’ Konami said, ‘You can change everything, but you’ve got to do it in the same time and budget.’”

I love that quote. It kinda shows the sort of issues the franchise has faced with Western developers in a nutshell almost.

                • With Capcom seemingly ran out of ideas since after RE5, I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually come with a Raccoon City 2 or a Neo-Raccoon City, built up all over again on the same land. After the dumb "Neo-Umbrella" gimmick, which wasn't related to the pharmaceutical company in any way, I'd say everything is possible.

The chapters AREN'T out, you don't have a point to make. People who posted stuff from early release copies or whatever don't quality as the chapters being released for everyone.

The goddamn point is: I've seen the whole game already.
