i said waste of time in a way....generally when ppl makes mods from what iv seen they're main intention is to release it

hopefully we'll see a release of it, more of 1.5 side of things but i am impressed

It's a bit contradictory though, if you do something just to teach yourself then you don't actually need to upload an entire walkthrough on Youtube, world knows there are much better sites to share portfolios rather than YT.

We don't know his full motives. If he's going for a job in games then he's got more attention on YouTube and via gaming websites that any other Coder out there writing a home-brew project they have no intent on releasing. Plus, sharing media is so common nowadays that you can really say it's gaming press that brought this work to everyone's attention, not his YouTube channel.

It works in every possible manner and YT videos are generally easier to share than anything else. Now he's got recognized as a capable programmer and you get a full length video of his skills, possibly the best portfolio you would ever want. Nothing wrong with how he did that, the only complains come from those want to play with anything named "Resident Evil" as if their lives depend on it. Unless he has a change of heart, it's no use making considerations about a well thought decision.

Sure, he might catch a lot of attention on YT, but what kind of attention? Mostly from gamers and RE fans, and gamers/fans aren't going to give him a job. If you want to apply for a job in a company, then you're better doing a brief demo reel showing all your skills in 1-2 minutes and send the link to the company you're trying to apply at. Nobody in the videogame or the movie industries is going to waste an entire hour watching at your video to judge your skills. This is a good example of a game programmer demo reel:
My college demo reel. Shows several past projects of mine, targeting several platforms. Languages used include AS3 and Unrealscript. Artists include Derek Hetrick,…

You can see, just a brief video showing fragments of different works and your contact info, something you can't miss on any portfolio/demo reel.

I don't know his motives, but I highly doubt he's doing that to find a job, if he is then he's doing it in the wrong way.

Ever heard of Narbacular Drop? It was the initial idea behind Portal. The whole development team was hired by Valve when they showed a demo at some game con event. RE2 is a popular game, so it's bound to have even a wider impact on the news spreading, contrarily to Narbacular Drop where the idea was to create a unique name to aid search engines in finding the project. There are several ways you can approach the industry and this is just one of them.

Also, YT is still a good way to get known and you don't need a contact - private messages will do just fine to get in touch with somebody.

If I'm not wrong Narbacular Drop was a free PC game released in 2005 by a group of students, which already gained some awards by that time, and had an innovative concept that caught the attention of Valve, so they hired the team to make Portal.
They were interested in the idea and the success of the game so they hired the people behind that project, it wasn't just a video on Youtube they saw of someone who managed to extract all the content from a game and putting them together, adding his programming skills, to recreate another game.

^ That's the whole point: Rod Lima took assets from a not-so-good game and pieced them together into something that looks good, generating a good amount of interest in return. It doesn't matter if the game is just presented as a video or a playable demo, it's a concept after all.

I can understand the disappointment from some of those who want to play this. However, he never intended for this to see release but he offered to give a glimpse into what it could look like from start to finish while demonstrating his ability. Whether you're for or against the idea of RE2 being remade it makes for an interesting experience even if only that of a spectator's.

Anyone else find the FOV too wide? There's too much distortion on the edges of the video image (like a really wide angle lens).

Whilst I noticed that, I dismissed it as the cameras being set for 16:9 and the YouTube video is presented at 4:3, but I haven't tried forcing the footage into 16:9 to confirm.

He probably didn't adjust the focal lenght of the cameras. Some 3D software come with a wider focal lenght by default.

I don't know if you can import camera positions from a 3D package into UDK. Whilst it's probable, considering that all Camera_Actors in UDK have an FoV setting, an aspect ratio settting and a 'Constrain Aspect Ratio' option and that the data from Darkside Chronicles wouldn't have RE2's camera locations in them it's more probably more likely that he did set these up in UDK.

There are even sections in his remake, in the lab, where the camera tracks the player. He's not going to be doing this accidently or leaving things to chance when he's learning all he can about the whole thing.

No difference. Either if those focal lenght values came by default or if he manually set them, they don't feel quite right. He might know a lot about 3D but not necessarilly has to know about every camera parameters besides the common position/rotation values, or maybe he does think these focal lenghts are right.

Also, I think there's a chance that he had to force the perspective given the narrowness of most rooms, it's another possibility.

Anyway, it's his project, if it was for me I'd also suggest slowing down running speed, it's way too fast, but he might like it that way, who knows.
