It is the same lab. There is no source to say they are different, it was just speculated because of the geography.

Thing is, you can also argue why the REmake mansion looked entirely different from RE1's or any other location in the game. It's a remake, and the current artists interpretation of how the area is supposed to look. REmake and Zero take place within the same universe, so naturally the labs will be updated and look slightly different to it's older counterpart.

I wouldn't be opposed to them expanding the factory into an actual area like the sewers instead of it being some relatively pointless corridors. It would be something fresh to play and could be interesting.sigpic

I think the main reason people think the lab in REZero is not the same lab in RE2 because of the "magic elevator" that shows that the marshalling yard was not in or too near Raccoon City. I can't remember the specific sources, but some sources said that the lab was directly underneath Raccoon City. This could have simply been leftover information from 1.5, when the lab was in fact under the city.
I think a lot of people also forget the underground cable car journey to the marshalling yard in RE2, that had to be quite some distance.

Well, according to Sherry in RE2:
Claire: "Do you know where your parents are?"
Sherry: "They both work at the Umbrella Chemical plant, near the city limits"
Though she's actually talking about the Chemical plant (where she thinks her parents work) and not the secret lab itself, I think it's fair to assume those two facilities shouldn't have been far from each other. In fact the P12-A "Dead Factory" Plant from RE3 and the Raccoon Hospital are roughly in the city limits too.

It is simply there to aid the player with item recollection and to reduce backtracking.

^Exactly.. although DSC did expand the sewers a little bit, while getting rid of other areas at the same time.
Hopefully they make new areas, or change the look of rooms a little bit - so they are recognizable but yet new aswell.
Maybe they could use some 1.5 ideas and modify them to fit into the Retail RE2 look .. the labs had some nice ideas and monsters.
The Factory could also be expanded a little too...
Or even more sections of Raccoon City streets to explore in the beginning of the game to give us more of a RE3 vibe?"I never thought any of this stuff my brother taught me would work!"
