Anyway, I don't think the topic should be locked as it generated a healthy and interesting debate about the series. Just ban the spammer.

Back on topic though, since I finally got a chance to read the full topic (Alzaire!!). I still have a lot of fun going through the old games, and I think Resident Evil 4 was great. I don't think the games are past their prime at all. Resident Evil 4 pushed the series into even more hands and its one of (if not the) biggest franchises Capcom has. It consistently sells despite some of the games being spinoffs or ports.
If anything the series is the exact opposite of being past its prime with the introduction of Resident Evil 4's gameplay.Last edited by Dot50Cal; 03-11-2008, 10:58 PM.

I personally believe that RE Remake and Zero brought new light to the series on Gamecube, the graphics and gameplay were pretty amazing for last generation standards and I hope it will continue on with the next gen consols via PS3, Xbox 360. The nintendo Wii already has shown that with RE4 wii and Umbrella Chronicles. The potential is there and I can not wait for Resident Evil 5. I can't even wait for the up comming movie Degeneration.

I think there is a lot of potential left in the series, but I doubt Capcom's capacity to exploit that potential. The series should, really, be reaching it's end. It's one of the biggest franchises ever now, bar those sports games that bring out a new game with slight tweaks and that years roster. It's becomming a cumbersome beast of a franchise, with books, movies and...how many games? 13 or 14, including Remake and Deadly Silence. I'm probably missing some too.
The problem is, especially after four, that it made Capcom a shit load of cash. Which is great, for them, but means they're going to milk every last drop they can squeeze out of the RE franchise. If that means another, animated movie, some more books and a few more games...great.
Problem is, RE4 made some mistakes. Good game...about as terrifying as my 3 year old taking a nap. Since RE4 did so well I don't image RE5 will change that. So it's gonna be action, action, action again and that just isn't RE. It's why I don't like UC...half the fun of RE, for me, was 'What's in the next room? Items? Herbs? Oh God, I need herbs. But it might be a hunter. Or a tyrant. Or something.'
In RE4, and likely 5, it's 'So...enemies in the next area. Should I use this, huge gun or this, much huger gun?' By choosing your moment, making mass action something unusual and special (like the house attack, one of my favorite bits) you could bring back the scares. Sure, beef up the enemy numbers, but drop the ammo count. Make killing everything not an option. Make the enemies a real threat. Make running, sneaking and hiding equally valid to blowing things head off.
Then the RE series might have some real legs left on it. At least, for me. If RE5 is like RE4 I'll probably play it, enjoy it...and from then on wait until the RE games hit the second hand shelf.

I've looked at this thread a few times without participating, because it really comes down to a matter of opinion and personal taste. But what the hell, here's my 2 cents.
*The original Resident Evil & RE-DC (wow, this is awesome! They should make more games like this)
*RE2 (wow, this is AMAZING! Bigger & better in every way)
*RE3 (some were disappointed by this and even considered it not a 'real' RE game. While it's not as big as RE2, it quickly became my favorite. I love it in every way, it's fun and this was 'the peak' for me, for many years)
*RE-Survivor (I was a RE fan and a lightgun nut so I loved this. Very innovative and a fun way to play RE. Not as good as the others but it's not fair to compare the 'side games' with the main ones. It's great for an offshoot)
*RE-CV (I was very jealous of Dreamcast owners who bragged about this. "It's the best RE and HaHa, you playstation owners can't play it". I got my chance when it came to ps2 and was very disappointed. I liked it but this was the series low point for me)
*RE-Survivor2 (a backwards step from Survivor. The worst game in the series, main and side games included)
*RE-Dead Aim (Great! The best lightgun RE game)
*REmake (Just like the original but better overall with very pretty graphics. Still, I didn't quite like it as much as RE2 & RE3. But it is a fantastic remake)
*RE-Zero (again, just like playing the old games but with awesome graphics. This has its faults but I think it's a great addition to the series)
*RE-Outbreak 1&2 (These are something different but I learned to love them. It's old style gameplay with some new twists. They offer a lot but overall not enough to beat the classic main games)
*RE4 (yes, it's very different to previous RE games but this is the 'new peak' for me. The ps2 version is possibly my favorite game of all time. Not as crisp as the GC version but makes up for it with the extras. It's the game that keeps on giving! The main story is an epic masterpiece, with classic RE play, a lot of running & gunning, sniper sections, fun on rails sections, shooting gallery mini games, big boss fights, interactive FMVs, all kinds of cool stuff! Then there's Ada's 2 games, which are great and worth the price by themselves. The mad fun Mercenaries with 4 levels and 5 characters. I've played Mercenaries alone, a hell of a lot more than many other full games. Extra costumes, extra weapons... have I forgotten anything?)
*RE-UC (This is okay. Better than Survivor2 but below Survivor and Dead Aim. Not bad for what it is but it's not really a follow up to RE4. It's just an RE themed shooter for the Wii)
So, the peak for me currently sits with RE4, the last game, not including RE-UC. So I don't think it's past it's prime. It's evolved into something different but I like it. I love the old style games but I also love the new style of RE4. It would be nice to have a combination of both or I wouldn't mind if Capcom made some new games like the old ones and some like the new. I don't see why they should have to stick with either style forever... I just hope they continue to make high quality RE games (RE2, RE3, REmake, Zero, RE4).
RE5 looks similar to RE4 but who knows? Watching the RE5 trailer, the game looks like it could be damn hard. When I imagine myself pointing a handgun at that mob of running, angry Haitians I think, "I am SO dead!".
At least RE5's sequel should come much sooner than what we've waited for RE5. They wont be starting from scratch for the next one.
