  • Best versions of RE 2 & 3?

I am a bit of a latecomer to the series having only played Resident Evil: Code Veronica (Dreamcast) and Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube & Wii). I want to catch up on all the games I missed.

I'm planning to get Zero and Remake for Gamecube but I'm not sure if the Gamecube versions of 2 & 3 are the best ones. I can either play the Dreamcast ones using the VGA port on my HDTV, the PS1 versions upscaled through the PS3 (HDMI) or the Gamecube versions (Component).

    Make my decision for me!

I'd say Gamecube for both, as it has Extreme Battle on RE2, and higher frame rates for the FMV's on both

      Dreamcast for both.
RE2 has the mini game AND the nightmare difficulty AND concepts gallery
RE3 because you have a few extra (crap) costumes, and don't have to unlock mercenaries, its there out of the box.

Extreme Battle is the dual shock release of re2 too.
For me the N64 version of re2 is the best with EX Files, different costumes, item randomizer, & blood color chooser.

I'd agree with TheSelfishGene as the DC counter parts FMV are near DVD quality and RE2 even has added stuff such as art/video/model veiwer (galleries) built in and the games both play at 60fps.

All versions of the games ran at 30fps. The DC games did look the cleanest and saw some resolution bumps. The only flaw, if you will, of RE2 for DC was that the music wasn't well ported (being a port of the PC game), and the RPD exterior music was missing. Other than that, I concur. Especially with the full screen CGI.

RE3 on the other hand had better sound, but longer loading times and lower resolution/frame rate CGI than the original PS version. So I'd have to say that the PS and GC versions are best for RE3.

Honestly though, aside from the extra difficulty of the DC RE2, all versions are pretty much on the same level. Whatever version you get your hands on is fine.

I think I'm gonna go with the GC versions first and then maybe check out the DC ones if I can find them later on.

I can't wait to play now, I'm excited!

the differences should be neglegable, just get the versions you can for the cheapest amount of cash.

Sounds like the Dreamcast ports are the ones to choose. I always thought the Gamecube ones were the best, having a higher video frame rate and all...

RE2 for the Dreamcast is the best looking and has the most SF except the EX files.
RE3 for the GC looks the best, and the SP are the same for about every release.
                    Spoiler:

Doesn't the PC port of RE3 contain the high-res backgrounds?

You mean the version that looks like someone threw up all over it, and sounds like it's coming through a shitty cell-phone speaker?

The samples are bit for bit identical to the original PS version. In fact, you can get cleaner audio out of the PS2 Toslink. The DC version however is a clear upgrade audio wise.

A note though, the GC versions have poor encoding on the FMV's. I think they used divx, at a low bit rate because the smudging and artifacting is very apparent.

Rewak, I really hate people who bash things that are almost a miracle. If you can do a better job compressing 1400MB (two CDs worth) into a 64MB cartridge, with the result more than playable and everything is intact with a few special extras, be my guest and go ahead. In the meantime, stop critisizing it.
