  • More Resident Evil 5 racism remarks..

This time from famed internet gaming columnist N'Gai Croal, whose first reaction was 'wow clearly no one black worked on this game'.

With the recent English release of the Famitsu interview, it has been confirmed that the game's setting is Africa, this could escalate into something big by the time the game is near release.

    Read the full report here.

Moved this over to the Umbrella Labs. IMO its not really news worthy for the main page, just more stupidness.

Out of all meaningless rants (particularly the very first one), Croal does make a sound argument and I'd expect no less from him.

I think, again, the point is not that Capcom can’t or shouldn’t make a zombie game set in what appears to be an impoverished country where the majority of residents are black. I’m not saying that. But what I am saying is that if I was Capcom, I wouldn’t have suggested to put out that trailer. I would have said, “You know what, this has tremendous capacity for being misunderstood, and we want to signal that this is not what you might think it is” — and they didn’t do that. That’s what I’m saying.
We've seen an early dose of mixed reactions from a mere trailer, so try to imagine a taste of things to come if you will. Granted, the game will have more content that's likely done tastefully that will rid the whole issue but based on the trailer, it can and has been easily misunderstood.

Almost makes Iron Sheik's rants sound sane.
If he had a brain, he'd be dangerous.

I think anyone who brings up the 'RE5 is racist' topic is racist themselves for thinking about it. It's stupid, because everyone wants black and white people to be treated equally, and now that we've had the chance to blow white zombies away, now why not black zombies to make it equal? Hmm? I find the whole thing totally stupid, anyway.

It’s like they’re all dangerous; they all need to be killed. It’s not even like one cute African — or Haitian or Caribbean — child could be saved. They’re all dangerous men, women and children. They all have to be killed.
I love how this guy judges the entire game based on less than 3 minutes of footage. (When were there children in the trailer, exactly? Scratch that. I doubt the guy sat through more than 30 seconds of the trailer).

The exact same thing can be said about RE4. The earliest trailer of the current build didn't even feature Luis or the two spanish cops. They just jumped straight into the villagers attacking you for absolutely no reason at all. At least in the RE5 trailer you can see their life before the infection and you can see them clearly get infected.

Who knows, the controversy may help the game.About a year ago, people were complaining about a Tin Tin comic made in the early 20th century (i think) which contained racism. That week it made record sales.

Pure nonsense - It truely goes to show that people have nothing better to do with their time.

However, I do agree that people who consider BioHazard 5 to be "racist" are racist themselves... Only a racist would even think of horseshit like that.

You didn't hear "white" people get in an uproar when we were blowing their digital limbs off in previous BioHazard titles, and you sure as fuck didn't hear any Female Activists complain that female zombies/ganados barely appeared in BioHazard titles.

Hell, in the opening intro of BioHazard 3, both African-American and Caucasion police officers (both male and female) get mauled by zombies. Oh. and let's not forget the obese zombies in BioHazard 3, and having to shoot Marvin in Bio2, an African-American Police Officer that happens to get infected and turns into a zombie.

Oh and another, do these shitbags even investigate previous BioHazard titles? Obviously not, because two of the main protaginists in the Outbreak series are African-American.

So, why all the ignorant racist/prejudice bullshit now? Simply because some ignorant, uneducated people out there want to throw the "race" term into everything nowadays. They're the fucking racists themselves.

So to anyone reading this that thinks BioHazard 5 is about racism - fuck you. You don't know a damn thing about the BioHazard series - IT'S NOT ABOUT RACE, it's about spontaneous Bio Hazard outbreaks.

EDIT - I apologize for the cursing, but racists and racism in general infuriates me. What makes me even more irate is that people are making a huge deal about "race" now because the upcoming US Presidential election. We're all human beings, not categorized minorities.

As I posted on GameFaqs when someone was complaining about the games racism:

""OHNOEZ, RESIDENT EVIL GAIDEN IS RACEST, I'M GREEN AND I'M OFFENDED BY BARRY KILLING GREEN ZOMBIES!!!"

Seriously, if you're going to complain, give a good reason.
The first time I seen the Resident Evil CV trailer, I was like "Awesome!!"
When I saw the Resident Evil 4 trailer I was like "Awesome!!"
When I saw the Silent Hill 5 trailer I was like "Awesome!!"
And when I saw the Resident Evil 5 trailer I was like "Awesome!!"

                          Why?
Because the gameplay and the way the game looked got me saying that, not because of some fake racial bull, the way the game was and had nothing to do with the people whatsoever.

Okay, so if you say this is racist, these must be:
RE1 is sexist for no females
RE2 is homophobe for no LGBT people
Gaiden is racist for Yellow/Green/Blue/Red people
                          And so on.
And I'm gonna be honest, I'm homosexual, I've seen no homosexuality in any film, game or any other thing. Am I offended? No!

Get over yourself; you never complained when Leon was blowing Spaniards heads off did you? DIdn't think so, so shut up. ^^"

EDIT: Also, good points, Mark, and the others contributing about the fact the games no racist! > : (

I was going to post a long winded reply, but MarkGrass pretty much got all the points I would have added in there.
Besides, 99% of the time I disagree with what N'Gai Croal says, giving his ethnicity and the first quoted quip of his reaction to the trailer, any opinion he might put forward would clearly not be objective anyway.

I do think the trailer was in bad taste if you want to look at race, however it was really just to showcase the opening scenes of RE5, I wish people'd remove the Politicially Correct sticks from their arses already.
Its bad enough living in nations which cower under the banner of politicial correctness, its a pity that that same politicial BS is seeping into videogames now too.

I won't go into a HUGE rant, because I believe the trailer has been viewed WAY out of context (ie. With the games full story in place), but I will comment on this.

Croal:I looked at the “Resident Evil 5″ trailer and I was like, “Wow, clearly no one black worked on this game.” Because I wonder, and I haven’t sort of really dug into it that much, but I wonder what sort of advice Capcom gave them. The point isn’t that you can’t have black zombies. There was a lot of imagery in that trailer that dovetailed with classic racist imagery. What was not funny, but sort of interesting, was that there were so many gamers who could not at all see it. Like literally couldn’t see it.
Sorry if I am confused, but isn't this a good thing? More and more younger generations unaware of racial under tones? Is the message getting across?

I think it's important to make younger generations aware of what happened, but to bring to their attention racist imagery that they otherwise might not interpret? I'm old enough and sensible enough to ignore your bullshit, but the very kids you may want to be teaching a history lesson to may just be impressionable enough to swallow some of it. Perpetuating your race war inadvertently.

C'mon Croal. Do you REALLY think a game will come out in this day and age, outright demonizing black people?! Use your fucking head. And when it does. I'll be right behind you in the picket lines
