Plagiarism to be more exact. Even if the articles did become public knowledge once he put them up on the site, he worked hard on researching, scanning pictures/articles (not to mention tracking down the books/magazines in which they came from), and typing up the stuff they contain.

Man, yeah.... before Wesker posted the Trevor's Letters thing the only thing most people knew releated to it was the bloody lettering on the wall image that had come from some magazines back in the day and the rumors of these Letter's existing. Within months most sites had the thing copied all over the place. I tried my best when I was still operating communication with a large number of the sites to try and get it removed or properly credited... some worked with me, others against me.

LOL.... I also remember over at The Dark Legacy, when this stealing of the English version happened, Dan Birlew came out and tried to state you can't hold copyright over a translated copy of other peoples work... which you can, because the translation is as accurate as that persons interpretation and is classed as a seperate piece of work. We can't copyright our websites, but we can fight for the right over the original written content in it if we want.

I don't remember this specific problem with Birlew but I know that the infamous sentence "you don't own anything about RE, Capcom does, so just shut up" (and don't forget it's close friend "this is Internet, everything is free on internet so stop crying") came several times.
This sentence is the parasites' motto. It helps them sit on their asses and wait for someone else to do all the hard work so they can steal it and take credit for it.

My way of thinking is different. I think that every kind of work deserve a kind of payment. In my case, credits (which are free, by the way :p ). You can of course disagree with me but then, don't use my informations.

you don't own anything about RE, Capcom does
Well, that statement is really 100% accurate. For example, if I were to rip backgrounds from BioHazard 2, post them online and claim that they are "mine", I would be commiting plagiarism in the first degree. If I translated Wesker's commentary found at Survivhor and claimed it was "mine", then I would be commiting plagiarism against Wesker.

Wesker's work is 100% his own (excluding CAPCOM's Artwork(s) from various BioHazard titles). Wesker is the soul individual who wrote the reviews and insights found at Survivhor - they are his, and noone else's. All that has been said already, but I don't think this has - I personally feel that Survivhor is fine the way it is. I respect the idea of a "French Bio-Portal", and especially respect Wesker's views and insights into the BioHazard series.

Alot of people are forgetting that while it isn't mandatory to learn the French Language in the USA, it is respectable to do so because France's involvment building the USA (same with Spain and learning the Spanish Language) - hence why just about everything sold in the USA has not only English, but French and Spanish description aswell. And a few people here might not realize this because of their young age, but once you get into High School, it is sometimes mandatory to learn either French or Spanish to get enough credits to pass High School.

^ Totally off subject, I know, but it all boils down to respect. If Wesker feels threatened that his work will be stolen, it is his prerogative NOT to translate. And while some people will hate to hear this, alot of citizens in the USA are horrible when it comes to online plagiarism. I can't blame Wesker for keeping Survivhor in French...

Even more off topic but, In some states you can take Computer Education instead of a foreign language.

Im doing this because I find foreign language classes in public schools largely ineffective. Most of their classes boil down to "watching foreign movies or watching a movie with a different language selected."
Most kids I know who take French or Spanish can't speak it worth a damn.

When I learn a foreign language its going to be through personal study and private lessons.

Well yeah, that's what I was referring to.

The translation is considered an original piece of work under the basis that it is a new translation of an exisiting item, but has it's own coverage. No one quite got that over at the DL.

A lot of this extends beyond pre-exisiting copyright law in most countries, so much so that current Harry Potter law suit making the news is an exact example.... the publishers are trying to claim you're not allowed to publish a Encyclopedic-based book about someone elses copyright, something that's never been shown true as of yet. Even in the judge in the case is asking both parties to settle outside of court because it's far too untested and will see the case drag.

As far as I'm concerned it obviously isn't, because there are a large number of unauthorised guides in this style for movies, TV shows, video games, etc. out there doing just that.

                Wesker - No prob

Most of it happened between Hunk and Birlew. It was a big laugh to me too, and I gave Dan a lot of crap about it in the staff forum. If Umon reads this topic he may recall it as well because he was there at the time having his own battles with Birlew.

                  Off topic again.
I've been taking French for the past 3 years (Compulsory in the UK, or you take Spanish? I don't know how it works for other schools), and I can't remember a damn thing because of how poorly I've been tought, all I can say are common things like:
"Bonjour! J'ai voyage Espagne! C'etait super!"
                  And that's not even right...>_>

                  Oh well, BACK ON TOPIC!
I believe that anything you right belongs to you, be it personal or on the net; no-one should steal it.
No-one steals blogs, or someone's journal and claim it as their own, so why this?
If Wesker personally wrote it, it could be considered his online journal about the BioHazard games, no-one has the right to steal it, at all, and claim it as their own.
                  It's just rude and inconsiderate.

Thanks for the show of support guys, I really appreciate it

Anyway, there won't be an English version of SurvivHor (I don't have the skills and the will to translate 700+ pages). As stated before in this topic, you can watch a few English videos in my Youtube account, summarizing my French files.
Later this year, with Dot50cal help, I am planning to remake my RE1 and RE1.5 walktrough videos, with Dot doing the narrative - as he did for the Dominion's videos.

Since I created SvH in 1999, I wished several times that an other webmaster created a RE beta-only website. Sadly, this never happened. It would have been fun to compete with him/her, tough :p
Except for Inflames with Bioflames (but he's focusing on 1.5 only, so it's kinda different purpose) it seems that no one want to dig into the RE betas. ATM, Dot is the only webmaster doing some extensive research in the RE betas, and that's why I am visiting his website/forum on a regular basis

I was thinking of starting a site that can be publicly contributed to (the suggestions would have to go past me first, though), and all the recognizable figures in the RE beta community would be official collaborators (Dot50Cal, imacwesker, etc). However, I need to practise with website design first

                        Would anyone be interested?

No such luck, Dark Legacy went offline a couple of years ago. The only thing close I've found a copy of an admin thread I saved where I defended Hunk and Umon's position on something else just after the aforementioned incident, but I found that last year on a DVD I'd burnt a few years back. If I find it again, I'll post it.

Just to clarify what Wesker said, and I agree, the quotes he gave were examples of what people would say if you asked them to remove the letters, and not something Dan said. What Dan did say however, in summary, was that basically due to his knowledge of working on guidebooks to that point there was no justification in the US to anyone being able claim otherwise. I disagreed on two points, firstly - at the time - Wesker and the others involved in translation weren't in the US, and secondly, the exact thing I mentioned above.

On that point I'll tell Umon to check this thread if I see him online and share some other Birlew related stories if he can... they used to get into arguments often over @ the DL, which would usually end up with Dan using his moderation powers to just close the topic (and basically thus sweep it under the rug).

To be fair though outside of a couple of heated DL admin discussions I actually get on fine with Dan myself, have basically done since the days of Evil Online, and I still stick my head in over at his forums now and then. It's actually been interesting to hear some of his stories now he's gone completely freelance, because he's been able to talk about how much game publishers would throw their toys over what went in the guidebooks and what couldn't.

                                @ imacwesker :

Do you have the old "english" files ?

I can't read french and you site is so big and full of stuff that I don't know and cant read.......

But maybe if you have the english files anywhere you could share it with us (only the community here) or only the translated text ?
