  • Resi Evil White Labels

Is $120-$130 AUD/USD a bit much to part with for the RE1 and RE2 White Label games both together? I'm a bit torn between getting them and not at the moment. Please help me!

(P.S: Is there any difference from the retail releases?)

White label is literally just that, an authentic copy of software pressed onto a regular blank CD/DVD (without any cover design, a proper case, etc.) and, most of the time, labeled with a permanent marker (like what you see in the pics Dot50 posts).

Anyway, as for it's contents... try asking the seller? If it's just the retail copy then I don't really think it's worth it, unless you want a sample of the game developers' sweat and fingerprints.

So it's basically the "master" disk, before it's been reproduced and had the artwork done?

If its a DC white label, it is almost always (bar one or two) a pressed GD of the final game. And I highly doubt any developer ever even touched it, the disks were pressed, not burnt.

And no, a master disk is entirely different. The White Label is usually sent to the press and such, and really the lack of artwork helps deter selling them (or did at the time)

I don't think that's what he means. My copy of Resident Evil on Playstation is a White Label. It's nothing special - completely identical to the original release. Virgin published the game here and "The White Label" was just a brand name they used. There were several copies and other non-RE games with "The White Label" too.

Not sure if the terminology is different outside of Australia, but if they are aussie copies of the game you are kinda getting ripped off - there's nothing unique or different about them besides the front cover.

Nah, the PC edition "White Labels". Pic:

                The top-left two. I think they're Virgin.

Unless you don't already have the PC editions of 1 and 2 then it's not likely worth it.

White labels have been around since the old vinyl days.

They are usually a test pressing, to check everything is A-OK before mass production begins.

Quite deceptive to name a line of games after it. I assumed that's what Helegad was refering to the whole time.

Just to follow up what Nemesis said, Virgin released RE1 and RE2 to "White Label" on PS1 and PC after Capcom dropped them as their distributer to new titles. The PS1 edition of RE1's had so many "labels" attached to it by Virgin I've lost track (IIRC aside from the original, the game was given the brands "White," "Value," put in a charity support box set with one or two other games, and of course Sony's Platinium label).

Yeah, I was referring to the "white label" RE games in the pic the whole time.

A PS1 White Label edition with a cover like the white label PC version? Never seen it. Interesting...

Value Series and White label seems to be the same release:
