That's optional though, you can either go out on a killing rampage, or you can go sneak and not caught, thats not action, thats sneaking, going out is action, you can pick what tactic you want to pick.
So technicly, it's action and it's sneaking are optional.

    • Don't know what about splinter sell, but as Gradon said every metal gear can be beaten without any alarm, or beaten by killing every breathing creature in your sight, thats only up to you. So in RE4 either in most of situations you can run away from the enemy without fighting it, hell it was possible in all RE games.

      • I'd disagree with that. The older Resident Evil's made ammo a commodity, something you needed to conserve. In RE4 you can find plenty no matter what you do, and you get more the more enemies you kill. In fact you get more of everything the more you kill. And with the great packs of enemies it's a nightmare to dodge your way through or remain unseen.

With even bigger packs of enemies RE5's gonna have the same issues, only more so.

As to the enemies lack of dodging and weaving, I can see the logic to peoples arguments. It does explain a lot. Of course, I never saw a zombie armed with throwing axes and crossbows either, so you could argue they could have gone further, but at least there was some logic behind the decison to make the enemy attack patterns stupid.

        • Well I'am not trying to say that older RE games are not better than RE4, but I've beaten all RE games exept from REmake, RE0 and Outbreaks, and I had enough ammo to kill all the enemys I've encountered. It only was problematicly to make it for me in RECV. I'am just trying to say that it's all dependes from the person that playes the game. For example, my best friend, wile playing RE4, killed so few of enemies and had so few of ammo that he had always ran from danger including fights with all regenerators (he didn't found the i/r optics) a verdugo, the second el gigante and most of the dr. Salvadors not counting most of ganados. But I've killed them all even on hard.

          • I never found ammo was that common in the older ones. I usually had to leave at least some of the zombies alive and dodge around them, but that's my playing experience.

            • But got to admit that in RE2 I was always runing from ivys. And lets dont forget about Nemesis while playing on hard. But as crazy as it may sound I've killed everyone wile playing in RE1 as Chris for the first time.

              • I honestly don't think there's a solution to the "perfect RE game" for newbies and vets alike.

The closest you could get is RECV, which, if you look back at it...is when the series really started to go for a more "action-y" feel. Double-fisting guns, cutscenes with choreographed fights, more enemies. The other stuff still remained - fixed cameras, keys, puzzles.

RECV really started to bridge the gap to RE4. 4 just implemented a new camera for a 3D world. And gave you way too much ammo. And replaced undead foes with mind-controlled Spaniards (with crossbows equipped with flaming bolts).

Speaking of which....in the mercs, did anyone else find Wesker's silencer to be completely useless? I mean yeah it was awesome to have...but in almost every level you're getting charged at from the get go by enemies...there was no need for a silenced handgun.

Even when a friend of mine and I used the Action Replay cheat to use Wesker in the main game, one shot to an enemy would alert everyone, even with an instant kill (and with headshots, you'd have to be careful due to palga outbursts)

                  • Sure the RECV had a lot of action stuff but only in videos. The first Re game that had tons of action in gameplay was RE3, but it still had a lot of puzzles and exploration. I always thought that fans hated that idea in RE3 so the developers changed gameplay so greatly into more RE1 style for code veronica. So I would say that the "perfect RE game" for newbies and vets alike is RE3, but just IMO.

The series got injected with steroids when RE3 came out. It has more action than CV.

RE3 is the best game in the series right now. Despite that Its actually more RE4 than RE4. So in conclusion, A lot of the people that complain about RE4 are hypocrites.

Yeah, I guess you guys are right about RE3. I don't remember the game that well, as I only played through it once, when it came out...which was a long time ago.

And yeah, the series was headed down an "action" path, regardless.

I, for one, can embrace the new direction (as I enjoyed the gameplay in RE4); it'd just be nice to feel a bit more fright. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the "dark areas' in RE5 cause me to feel dread.

                          • Whilst I am in complete agreement with you Weed, my own personal detestation towards Resident Evil as a franchise now, extends way back to the days of Resident Evil 3 and beyond. It's clear to me that since after Resident Evil 2, Capcom, have been getting lazy and just been banging out any old crap with the Resident Evil name on it (RE3 and onwards). Numerous sequels and spinoffs have slaughtered the franchise, this onslaught later amplified with the release of Resident Evil 4 and will now continue with Resident Evil 5. I don't know about you, but I used to like being a Resident Evil fan. Now I'm just ashamed.

                              • I just saw the videos with chainsaw maniac gameplay. Did anyone else notice how he would stand still for several seconds, only run in straight lines and such, like a Pacman ghost? If that's how far they've come on chainsaw guys, hopes are that's how far they've gotten on the regular non-zombies.
Didn't notice that those flying things were BOWs until now either, I just thought they were random mutant bats from Silent Hill 4 or something. Makes me glad they're called BOWs, after playing Resident Evil 4 I'm missing the word. Kinda freaky when they came out of some guys head, though.
Oh, that animation where some guy was shot, fell and rolled around was quite nice even though he rolled into a wall but kept rolling.
