I hate RE4 Leon (what a surprise, right?) beyond what's healthy.
When I played through RE4 the first time, I was amazed at how fun it was (though a little mindless). But the overwhelming thought in my mind was that it was the first time I played a game where I absolutely hated the character that I was controlling.
RE2 Leon was probably the better of the two. RE4 Leon had far too many quips and pithy comebacks that would even put James Bond to shame. Then theres all those stupid Action Hero dodges and Jumps. What ever happened to just opening the window and stepping through? A senior moment perhaps?
Ok i'm sticking with old school r.e 2 Leon, apart from the clothes Leon wears in r.e 4, i'm not a fan of r.e 4 Leon. My reason for picking Leon from R.E 2 is because I prefer the police uniform and his attitude during the game.
I also like how he kicked birkins arse and nearly saved the girl, so hes not so super human like, unlike r.e 4, where he was able to kill loads of bad guys and save the girl on none other then a jet ski.
Don't laugh but I view Leon from R.E 2, as the same as I see Snake from MGS 1, he's a hero but at the same time isn't because if like me on your first go, you end up killing meryl (ada) and just escape the missle strike (lab being blown up), NOW THATS A MAIN CHARACTER I WANT TO PLAY.
I thought about it quite a while since Leon is my fav character from RE (closely followed by Billy Coen). Hell even took half of my nickname from him...
Well I liked him in RE4, but as people said his role lacked some kind of emotion. Nevertheless I loved his smartass comments
Well after some thinking i remembered Leon gets fucking shot in RE2 and the only thing he worries about is the girl (Ada), gotta love it
Still I needa cast my vote on the 'both' option...

If you mentioned Snake as he was in MetalGear, then maybe I would agree with you. Unfortunately, he's something of a grizzled veteran at the time of MGS1. What I like about Leon in RE2 is that he was just a rookie cop, first day on the job, totally unprepared for what awaits him at Raccoon City. He was vulnerable, yet headstrong and resolute. As time has gone on, Leon's gradually developed into a stronger personality, though on the flip side he's also become rather overconfident and cocky. He has the skills, he has the training, it's just a shame that it's gone to his head. I'm hoping that as the series progresses, Leon will eventually start to become a little tired, or jaded. He's been through a lot, seen some horrific things, and all of that can take a toll on anyone's psyche. Regardless of how confident they may be in themselves.
Chris, on the other hand, he needs to have some heroic and noble death in an act of self-sacrifice, exchanging his own life to save the many in a kind of Spock-esque demise at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Kills Wesker, but at the expense of his own life. OR wait, maybe that's how Barry should croak it. He's slowly dying from radiation poisoning, and he holds his hand up against the glass and says weakly to Chris, "I... I have been... and always shall be... your friend." - Before passing away with such dignity, that even the smallest Burton fan will have tears in their eyes.
Then in the true spirit of RE borrowing liberally from MGS, we'll cut to "Here's To You" from the ending of MGS4.
Mr. Spencer, that was a great words, totally agree with you. If Capcom will make something like this in re5 I would stop saying anything bad about them, because it would be amazing. But it's Capcom so not likely...

I like Resident Evil 2's Leon. I love the bit where Ada walks off (as she always does) and Claire's just hung up on him when he was still trying to talk to her. ''Why doesn't anyone ever listen to me!?''
