Originally posted by Archelon View PostFrom a purely objective, storytelling standpoint, RE4 was no better nor worse than any of the previous games. Each of the previous games in the series had just as many plotholes and contrivances as RE4. It doesn't take a degree in English Literature to realize this. The difference lies in the content of said stories, and that, I believe, is where most fans take issue with RE4.
Anyone who says that the previous games' storylines were better from a narrative perspective is either an idiot or a hopeless fanboy/girl.Originally posted by Archelon View PostAll of the Resident Evil games' plots have been paper-thin, flawed, and cliche-filled. thanks for those scans, this was indeed a very nice read
I actually like that fact that they had a version of the game with zombies as enemies. That shows me they really wanted back to the roots with the game.
Pre RE4 B.O.W.s Hell yes(Hunters, Lickers, Bandersnatch, Ivies, Giant Spiders, G-Type monsters, omg what could it be?)
Hopefully Capcom comes up with an amazing plot for this game *crosses fingers*

Yeah, and if they stick to the original storyline that continues where CVX left off then this will be GREAT, like FROSTED FLAKES..which are more than good, they're great!

I mean, give the old conspiracy story a bit more credit than to downcast it with RE4 which was more or less emulating the traditional RE plot. You could make a similar argument for Shadow of the Colossus which had a paper thin story and little of the details explained but I don't think anyone would leave the game feeling like they just witnessed a sham of a narrative. I know I didn't feel cheated after finishing REmake for the first time.
RE1 - amazing for it's time. A true horror-driven story. A group of police officers stranded in the woods retreat into an eerie, monster-filled mansion. Monsters are the result of a pharmaceutical corporation's experiments to make biological weapons.
RE2 (and RE3) - kind of the same story. Humans attempting to escape a zombified city...which is caused by another outbreak from previously mentioned pharmaceutical company.
RECV - siblings looking for one another stumble across zombified locales, where another set of siblings incestuously pine for one another. Insert more monsters. (starting to see why the series was dying...)
RE4 - government agent goes looking for President's daughter, happens upon nefarious plot of terrorist organization bent on world domination. What's missing? Oh yeah....sprinkle in some monsters, and voila! "Saved it."
I'll stick by my guns that RE4 is the weakest of all entries (storywise). Granted, the others aren't Nobel Prize-worthy, but RE4 - as many others have stated - is just another action game without Leon, Ada, Wesker, or the mention of Umbrella.Last edited by Jill's Boob; 10-02-2008, 03:05 PM.

But I stand by my assessment that the story and characters were the weakest in the RE series.
