It'd also allow for some interesting chracter development, such as Leon going a little loopy over what's real or whats not, or a friend and ally appearing as an enemy and getting shot. But knowing Capcom that would never happen.
There is another theory where everything happening is real, and the progenator Virus is animating the creatures we see and that they do exist. Personally I disagree but that's just me.

Well, personally, I think this version actually looks more interesting. The enemies are a lot creepier and the game looks much closer to the old RE's in terms of horror and puzzles while using the new controller scheme and making it more fun to play. In other words, the best of both worlds. Plus I think the story was more interesting and origional than combining the kidnapped the president's over endowerd daughter and the evil cult cliche plot lines. The blurring of reality could have shown Leon vulnerable and suffering...in other words, character development.
It does, however, look more complicated and too Silent Hill. Which is no doubt why it was scrapped in the end.

Anyway, I would have preferred RE3.5 to have been released. It looked a lot scarier than RE4, and thus a lot more of a Resident Evil. Screw RE4 Leon.
