RE4 did get alot of attention, im not sure if it was intended, but it became one of the greatest games of all time according to some people. Resident Evil is more popular than Silent Hill, which is true. More people like Resident Evil than they do Silent Hill, because Resident Evil started to change, while Silent Hill stayed the same. RE's change got attention from gamers that never even played RE or any other survival horror games. That is why its more popular and that was a smart move for Capcom because now there are so many new fans of the series. Its gotten to the point now were I am just a fan of the series no matter what. See, I disagree. I think that once you're a devoted fan, you should start caring more about what the developers do to the series. That's the thing, I didn't care, and just wanted to see what they'll come up with next, and this was when I was a casual fan of the series (even if I thought myself a hardcore fan at the time). But then I said, "Wait a second. It's not a good thing that they did this, and that. This doesn't belong in my series. No, no, no, I won't stand for this!"
That's the difference, I think. It's like religion. Are you more devout to your faith if you follow it blindly? Or if you question it? Many people I've talked to think that if you question your faith and contemplate it, you're more devout then. Because otherwise, you're just blindly following, which is what's happening with all these Final Fantasy fanboys and fangirls who are refusing to admit that Dirge of Cerberus was a terrible game, and all the Final Fantasy 7 spinoffs are blasphemy to its storyline. That's another one, Square-Enix. I was a fan of the biggest franchises for both those companies. But I didn't just blindly accept everything they threw at me, not caring about what they did. I questioned their decisions, and both companies ended up severely disappointing me.
It really doesn't make me less of a fan if I do that. I have standards to what Resident Evil should be.
And none of this "They had to change to bring in more audience" makes a difference. I don't care about a bigger audience, I care about the product itself, about what Resident Evil means to me. The series should've ended with the fall of Umbrella.

Well, if your gonna refer to anyone who still likes this series as blind fanboys, then your gonna find alot of them here. I disagree with you there. If im still enjoying the series, which I am, then im not just a blindly devoted fan. I dont question the series for what its become, and I have no problem with what its become. Things change, nothing ever stays the same and I have no problem with it.
And changing the game does make a difference, it makes a dramatic difference money wise according to Capcom. It doesnt matter to them what you want, it matters how much dinero they make off of your wallet. And the more gamers they draw in the happier they become, thats just how it works.
In your opinion the series should have ended with the fall of Umbrella, but to many of us who still love the series, I dont think so.

I completely agree with BH Ex. I have nothing more to add, except that RE4 should have been Gaiden 2, and zombies should always be in the canon REs.

"RE should have" this, and "RE should have" that.

I should have a bigger penis. Is anyone listening? Nay.

Well you don't think so, but that's my opinion. And the fact that I've given up on the series and you still love it, doesn't make my opinion any less valid than yours.
To me, RE ended with Code Veronica. Simple as that. As far as I'm concerned, aside from Survivor, the only games I consider Canon can be found in Resident Evil Umbrella Archives book.
RE has become what it is, and I'm not interested in it. But like I said, that doesn't make me any less of a fan to Resident Evil.

I do see a lot of hypocrisy in people's words though.
Like, you'd say, "I don't care what happens to the series. Why should Capcom care what fans think, Capcom should worry about money, and good for them."
So then why does the same not apply to the movies? People always complain that Paul Anderson doesn't care about RE's fans, and bash on his movies, saying they're not true to Resident Evil. But as far as I see it, his movies are more true to RE than what Capcom is doing right now. And RE has been more and more successful in the box office with each sequel, so obviously it's bringing in decent money. So why is Paul Anderson hated, then, when Capcom is praised for doing exactly the same thing to "Resident Evil," as Anderson is doing? Only in a different direction.

Now, I don't know if this had been brought up already in this thread (i've read the first 10 posts or so). If it has, then I'm reinforcing the point.

I don't understand why alot of people bash on how RE5 is like RE4, when I doubt that they bashed on the entire RE series for being like RE1. Every RE game is almost exactly the same. RE2 is RE1 in a city. RE3 is RE2 with a dodge feature. RE0 is RE1 with the AI helping you. RE4 comes along, some people love it, others despise it. It brought something new to the table. RE5 comes along, follows the footsteps of the entire series, and is immediatley smacked in the face with criticisim. Just my 2 pennies.

I don't bash on RE5 being the same as 4. I bash on it making some of the same mistakes when they have the oppurtunity, the resources and excuse to fix those mistakes and, of course, the new mistakes it's making.

The Ganados need changing. So far no one, supporter of RE4 and 5 or not, has said, 'Well actually, those ganados were awesome. I loved how they waited patiently to get killed.' Zombies may not be the answer for Re5 but ganados aren't, either. Given that these ones aren't the same as the Spanish beasties either it makes no sense that they still do the same, very stupid, tactic there predecesors used.

And secondly, Sheva's AI. If she's nothing but an item stealing gun platform that gets herself killed then, really, I'd rather not have her. Which isn't a choice. If Sheva is more of a hinderance to have with you than a pleasure then the game will fail. It's as simple as that. It's like enjoying running and being made to run with a big rock tied to your leg, and having no choice but to have it chained on every time you go for a run. what do you do instead? Not run.

Of course, if you like two player, another person can control her but, personally, I don't. So if the Ai is as poor as Enrico suggested I seriously doubt I'll gain much enjoyment playing the game.

I was just as mad as everyone else when Resident Evil 4 came out with an all new plot, controls, etc...then we had sit back and wacth the whole gaming world( some of which we're the same people who had previously had nothing but complaints about resident evil for it's "same old" plot, zombies and camera angles)jump on the bandwagon. I was a bit frustrated, but at the same time I was glad to see resident evil back on it's feet and getting the attention it deserves.
Now, don't get me wrong I don't want to see resident evil gain new fans and become a huge deal at the exspense of it's original fans and the original story of the game. As you can seehttp://www.the-horror.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2695.The biggest reason I'm excited for RE5 is because it's the big finale to the chris/wesker fued that we've wanted since CV, and I don't care how much it's like RE 4, nothing could keep me from enjoying this game.

Not even a little bit? It's a video game, not pickled pigs feet.

RE4 isn't so bad. It's a fun, mindless shooter. Plus, the story and characters are also mindless. Neo (main game) & Trinity (Separate Ways) pull off some uber-awesome, ulta-cool ninja moves.

cool concept cover! Im so diehard RE Fan, that I accept every RE series in the game, even though Outbreak isnt my fancy of gameplay, but it has bad ass environments and a great story. That is my argument!

Thats exactly what i've been trying to get across. If your a die hard fan of the series, then you accept every game no matter what.
Even if it no longer has nothing to do with survival horror, you just like the series for what it is, or has become

Well, considering I picked video game development as my career, I think it's safe to say, video games are a somewhat big part of my life.

EDIT: And no matter what the person above me thinks, I don't need to accept every single game to prove that I'm a die hard fan. Like I said, as far as I'm concerned, REAL Resident Evil has 3 basic things: T-Virus, Zombies and Umbrella.
