  • Nevertheless, even if he knew she was alive, this was the first time he saw her since Raccoon City (aside from in the window), not only that, she just happens to be there, while he's on the mission.
But he's just so cool that nothing phases him. Ashley could've taken off her top and said, "How do you like these?" And Leon would've replied, "They're cool..."

    • Some ultra-super-cool-James-Bond-Solid-Snake-ninja-operative Leon S. Kennedy nuggets of pure unadulterated gold:

      - "I know you boys didn't tag along so we could sing 'Kumbaya' together at a boyscout bonfire. Then again, maybe you did."

      - "Where's everyone going? Bingo?"

      - "Saddler, you're small time!"

      - [After almost falling to his death] "Won't fall for that old trick."

      - "Monsters. I guess after this there will be one less to worry about."

      - [After having a gun pressed to his back by Ada] "Sorry, but following a lady's lead just isn't my style."

        • Sorry...I enjoyed playing RE4, but I despised the characterization of Leon et al.

Playing as Leon actually detracts from my game experience when I replay it - I hate his demeanor that much. Bringing back Ada is fine, but the fact that she spins, flips, and flies through the air like Spider-Man is unintentionally hilarious. The developers tried so hard to make the characters into suave, espionage-action-spies that they lose any sort of appeal. Honestly, the characters in this game all have the same personality. Except for Ashley, she's a nimrod.

The story is weak, but it is serviceable...you just have to remind yourself that it is an RE game.

The villains...Ganados are appropriate cannon fodder. Most creatures are decent; much better than the latter bosses of REUC. Salazar, need I say more? A diminutive little psycho who is...just...very...lame. (Krauser was pretty coo,l though the knife battle is highly ridiculous - using hunting knives like swords? Give me a break.)

Situations: stone dragons that spit lava at you, running from a mobile stone Salazar robot thing, running up walls to backflip over lasers, etc. Honestly, it isn't "cool" if you're cringing at the ridiculousness of it.

I liked the new gameplay. I can accept the changes made: no more static cameras, no more intellect-void zombies, and the other revisions.

But cliche-filled dialogue, characters that defy physics (expected in video games...but not at every turn), and a paper-thin plot seriously ruin a good time.

There are a billion enemies to shoot-up, lots of QTEs, and a plethora of ammo. RE4 just does not feel like RE. They made the necessary changes to prolong the life of a near-dead franchise...but they didn't get the formula right.

I don't care how many awards the game won, or how many new gamers it brought to the franchise. To me it is just an ACTION game with a sprinkling of horror elements.

As for the thread topic: RE5 = RE4...so far, RE5 seems to be building on the framework of RE4. But I get a feeling of grander scope, and a more fulfilling story from the TGS RE5 trailer than I got from 20 hours of RE4. We all know that RE5 does not = RE4, as it is a new game, with new elements, a new story, and other things probably never seen before. But yes, the gameplay will probably be quite similar.

Which is fine, as long as Chris retains his apparent human weaknesses, doesn't issue one-liners that would make John Matrix cringe, and the story has some sort of originality. And there better be some actual horror involved.

          • Those are just my thoughts. I know opinions are divided on RE4. I am in the "don't think it's that great" category. They ruined a character I liked well enough (Leon from RE2) and took a series I rather enjoyed and made it into an action game pretty similar to all the other zillion shooters on the market.

I did have fun the first time I played it. I thought it was a blast (though the cutscenes and dialogue made me nauseous). I even played it again a second time shortly after beating it. And I still have fun firing up "The Mercenaries" on occasion.

I don't hate everything about the game. I just don't think it fits very well into the series. And I do NOT think it is a 9 or 10 (out of 10) like some other people have posted. But, to each their own. I'd personally choose to play REmake over-and-over again rather than RE4.

I do enjoy the new camera system, the new non-tank control scheme, and the QTEs. I also like the presentation, the graphical polish, and especially the way they really tried to tell a story with RE4. Earlier RE games all told stories, but they didn't do the best job with it. Characters were never fleshed out as much as you wanted, and cutscenes were very sparse. Most of the story was usually told through files. RE4 took a step in the right direction, but the main story was very generic and, IMO, on the laughable side of the fence.

Story is #1 to me. That's when I can enjoy a game - when the story is interesting, engrossing. Gameplay and graphics are not as important to me as story. And that is why RE4 fails in my book. The story, (some) situations, and (most) characters are just bad.

No matter how much I tried to remind myself, I still couldn't believe that it was.

It really seems like they were just trying to create a big mash-up of Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry, along with movies like The Hills Have Eyes, Lord of the Rings, The Faculty with just a touch of The OC.

Now, separate, those things might be awesome in their own ways... But together, it felt like they didn't know if they were coming or going. I mean, what's with Leon's high tech binoculars, for every time he used them, only ONCE are you actually allowed to control what you're spying.

The fourth wall... Yes, Metal Gear Solid breaks that fourth wall a lot, but because it's consistent, it worked just fine. Resident Evil has never done it, and once they did, it felt so out of place, and so, "WTF were they thinking!?"
I'm of course talking about when Hunnigan said, "I'm sending you the playing manual."

The radio conversations. Again, Mikami, just because your favorite game is Metal Gear Solid, doesn't mean that you have to rip off all of its ideas. I'm surprised that Leon couldn't hug walls, and that there wasn't an alert phase.

And I found it absolutely hilarious when Leon said, "I don't remember being a part of your crappy script." Because I thought to myself, "Wait... Is he talking about the actual game script?"
