• Jill VS Sherry - Their Roles in RE5

Okay, sort of a noob alert here. This is my first post, but I’ve been stalking this site and forum for many, many months, and I finally decided to sign up and post something. I apologize for yet another discussion regarding the Mystery Woman, but I just felt like this needed to be addressed and discussed.

First of all, I love Sherry, and she is, in fact, my favorite character, so when the first hints that she would be in RE5 started sprouting, I was incredibly excited, and like many people, I was under the impression she was the Tube Girl. But, because we only saw one, brief moment of Tube Girl a year ago and haven’t seen anything since, I’m starting to believe Tube Girl may have been completely scrapped from the game. Unless, of course, you’re suspicious of the second TGS trailer where we see some sort of capsule opening up and Chris looks quite distressed over what’s inside.

Then the Mystery Woman (Birdwoman, if you prefer) showed up, and many assumed she, too, might have been Sherry. I thought so myself. THEN… that Girl in Red popped up, and I was like, “Okay, that has to be Sherry, too.” I still think it is, because there’s no evidence proving otherwise. So, that at least clears up one thing for me: Sherry is the Girl in Red, no questions. As for the Mystery Woman… eh…

Like some here, I’m starting to assume that, yeah, Mystery Woman is Jill, and Wesker brainwashed her, and blaaah blaaah blaaaaah. My opinion is very, very low of that scenario. In all honesty, I hate it. Because wasn’t it Sherry whose whereabouts we were supposed to be concerned with? How long ago was it revealed that Sherry was in Wesker’s care? (I know there’s some debate over whether or not Capcom changed that scenario, given that a new edition of the Wesker Report DVD had that last segment cut out, but let’s ignore that for the sake of less theorizing.)

But here’s my point: I feel like, in the end, they’re going to rip Sherry off and give her a pathetic storyline that doesn’t evolve the series at all. Because, to me, I always theorized Sherry would go over to “the dark side” after all she’s been through (shitty parents, dealing with Raccoon City, Claire abandoning her, Leon being a moron and interacting with him alone is traumatizing). To me, it seems completely logical that Sherry would switch sides, and it’s interesting because Sherry was such a young character when we first met her. We’re under the assumption in RE2 that, “Awww, she’s just a helpless little kid! Gotta protect her! Zomg!” but then BAM, she ends up on Wesker’s side and works for him, either willingly or not. And, again, that works, because there’s history in the situation, and it isn’t random.

However, giving Jill that storyline is just… cliché. At least, it is in my opinion. I have no issues with Jill—I like her, she’s a good character, and yay—but the idea she ended up “dead” or whatever and somehow ended up brainwashed by Wesker and doing his dirty work is just silly. That’s my problem here. Giving Jill that storyline is so dull and cliché and ridiculous that I feel it adds almost nothing compared to letting Sherry have that storyline.

So, just for a second, let’s assume Jill is the Mystery Woman. (Ugh.) That means Sherry (obviously) is the Girl in Red, and from what we’ve seen of her in trailers, she’s once again helpless, alone and scared. Gee wiz, that doesn’t ring any bells for fans. And, oh, Jill is “dead” and Chris feels guilty about it, because his beloved partner died, and he doesn’t know if he’s ever going to be able to protect another one of his partners, so watch out, Sheva! But, lo & behold, Jill shows up, brainwashed by Wesker, and Chris can’t seem to wrap his head around such a surprising turn of events. <<< Obviously, from what I’ve concluded regarding the scenes in RE5, there will be many themes about partnership and so forth, and to me, this is a logical conclusion based on the knowledge Jill is “dead” and Sheva has showed up to be Chris’ new “partner.” And, okay, I’ll buy that. It adds for nice emotion in the game, and I’d actually really look forward to that. HOWEVER, why does Jill have to be the Mystery Woman? Why can’t they give her something else and let Sherry have the gosh darn storyline about working with Wesker? Geesh.

Like every other Resident Evil fan, my brain hurts thinking about all the possibilities, but I managed to develop some theories:
A.) Tube Girl has been scrapped from the game. That means it’s only between Mystery Woman and Girl in Red. Thus, Jill is Mystery Woman and Sherry is Girl in Red, meaning Jill has been brainwashed by Wesker, and Sherry is just running around all helpless because that’s what she does best and obviously ten years doesn’t mature a person. /sarcasm
B.) Sherry is Mystery Woman and Girl in Red. For whatever reason, she ends up “de-cloaked” for a moment in the game, and that’s why we see her running around all frantic-like. Oopz. And, maybe, just maybe, Tube Girl is actually Jill, and that’s why Chris looks so distressed in that one trailer where that capsule opens up. (Reason behind this? Uh, Wesker experimented with her or whatever. Why does Tube Girl look like she has blonde hair? Uh, weird lighting, maybe?)
C.) Jill is Mystery Woman and Tube Girl. <<< This doesn’t make much sense to me, because it seems like the Tube Girl shows up LATER in the game, whereas Mystery Woman seems to be around fairly early. So it wouldn’t make sense that she is free and running around in the beginning of the game and then later put in some tube at the end of the game. Just saying.) Oh, and thus, Sherry remains Girl in Red.
D.) Well, gosh darn, maybe Jill really is dead and gone forever, leaving Sherry to be the Mystery Woman and the Girl in Red. That would make me happy for Sherry, but sad for Jill. But I’m bias, so I’d take this scenario and be very very content with it.
E.) NONE OF THE ABOVE! Mystery Woman is Alice in her first-ever game appearance! And, I kill myself, along with the rest of the RE game fandom, and there’s nothing left of the franchise we once held so dear.

My concern basically stems from the fact that while I enjoyed Resident Evil 4, I remain bitter there wasn’t a better storyline in it. (Gameplay = amazing, storyline = lame.) Even to this day, I feel like the storyline should’ve been heavily altered in that game, thus putting Sherry in Ashley place and it having nothing to do with the U.S. Government and the president’s missing daughter. But I’ve ranted about that way too much, so I’ll stop here, because I don’t want this to turn into another anti-RE4 topic.

All I want is for Sherry to be given a GOOD storyline. There’s absolutely no reason why Jill—JILL, THE GIRL WHO SURVIVED NEMESIS—should end up dead and brainwashed when it’s Sherry who fits the mold for that scenario.

Siggghhhh. I spent way too much time on this post, and now I’m repeating myself. But I just wanted to get this out, and I hope there can be a good discussion revolving what I said here.

Welcome to the world of posting.

How can your favorite character be Sherry? Honestly? There's nothing wrong with that, I just don't see how someone could develop such a deep fondness for a small child that really only had a minor role in one RE game.

As for your hopes that there won't be any cliche elements to the story in RE5...um, do you remember RE4? That game is 99.8% cliche: James Bond-esque agent infiltrates foreign country to rescue important hostage and uncovers nefarious plot for world domination.

It's no use to wrack your brain trying to figure out the true identities of Tube Woman / Mystery Woman / Woman in the Red Dress. I mean, though the subtle clues are there...a young blonde girl in distress, a character named "Mystery Woman" who obviously keeps her face hidden for a reason, a tombstone and references to Jill Valentine...

As for Capcom scrapping the tube woman...I still don't understand why people think this. One of the first images that appeared on the internet from RE5 was of the upper torso and head shot of the girl floating in the glass tube. Then, the trailer from last summer showcased the footage of her opening her eyes (as the final, "take home" shot). Just because we've seen nothing since then, doesn't mean her storyline was scrapped. Takeuchi stated in an interview that the story for RE5 was the first thing in place during game development. Surely Capcom isn't going to reveal every little plot point for their game that they've been working on for a LONG time.

Oh and before someone throws out the "you always bash RE4" card, I am merely pointing out that the game is FULL of cliches, since xdeadpan was concerned over the possibilities that RE5 will have cliche plot elements.

As for Jill (possibly) being the "Mystery Woman" over Sherry...well, you have to think of it this way: who does Chris have more of an emotional tie to? Jill. Now, Sherry is an important character and Chris obviously would want to save her for the sake of his sister, but Jill's presence packs more of an emotional wallop.

I don't want to see any cliche plot elements any more than you do, but face it...it's hard to be 100% original anymore. Thus, many things end up being cliche.

Hopefully Sherry is the young blonde girl, and her storyline gets continued and/or resolved in a good way. Her ending up evil would be quite the shocker.

I just really, really like her, and I always have. I don’t know, maybe it’s because instead of seeing Sherry 100% as she was in RE2, I like to see her beyond that, after what she went through in Raccoon City. I felt the same exact way about Ada pre-RE4 (you know, before everyone and their mom started liking her after she reappeared in RE4 with uber-great graphics, thus worthy of fan admiration, zomg!!).

Yeah, I recognize that. But part of what is making me anticipate RE5 is the fact it has to do with Umbrella’s history and Spencer and the things most RE fans care about. I would gladly change around a thousand things in RE5, but Capcom doesn’t want to go back pre-RE4, unfortunately, and so I can take what I can get.

I don’t doubt RE5 will be full of cliché and cheesy moments (obviously there will be... I mean, those infected dudes on motorcycles, wtf?), but you know, both TGS trailers managed to reveal quite a bit that looked GOOD and not quite as cringe-worthy as RE4. Or maybe I’m just a sucker for that emotional music they used in the first TGS trailer, d’awwww.

You're right, there isn't, but identity debate/discussion aside, like I said, I just really want Sherry to have a good storyline, and I feel Jill may be the one getting the better one, one that seems faaaar more logical for Sherry.

True. I’m not 100% behind the idea Tube Girl has been scrapped from the story, but simply given what we’ve seen, sometimes it does seem like she is missing from the picture. But, actually, I kind of do want the Tube Girl to still be around, because that opens the possibility she might be Jill. (I know, I know, there’s the blonde hair to consider, but it actually really might have to do with the lighting).

Exactly. And that’s why I’ve started to believe Mystery Woman is Jill. I mean, maybe Sherry doesn’t have a huge tie into the RE5 storyline and they are simply reintroducing her as the Girl in Red so she can continue to appear in another game, maybe one with Claire.

I guess that would make more sense, considering it would help to have Claire around if Sherry’s going to have a large part of anything. I mean, you can’t finish Wesker’s story without Chris, just like you can’t finish Ada’s without Leon. So, maybe it’s only logical to say you can’t finish Sherry’s without Claire?

Well, if Jill is Mystery Woman or Tube Woman, it’s fair to say her chances of starring in RE6 would be slim, which some people originally believed she would be the lead character in. If Jill and Chris get some sort of conclusion in RE5, then that leaves RE6 to Claire, and like I said above, if you have Claire, you probably have Sherry. (At least at this point in the series. CODE: Veronica was too soon for any sort of wrap-up for any characters.)

I wonder if you are right about Claire possibly getting a shot at the lead role in RE6?

Maybe some people are right...there has been some speculation that Sherry could end up as Wesker's successor. I wonder...

So much speculation right now. It's all a lot to process. Capcom has done a good job of really confusing the fan base. Hopefully it all turns out better than RE4. I know when I first saw the official trailers for that game, my mind was askew at the possibilities for the plot and characters. And then I actually played the game. Needless to say, I had fun, but the story was a serious downer.

And you are so right about the infected dudes on dirtbikes. It just looks dumb, and when you think about it...it IS dumb. *sigh* Of course, I was already disappointed when I realized that I would again have to face infected villagers shooting flaming crossbow bolts at me. I've seen "Lord of War." I know that there're plenty of AK-47's in Africa...

Frankly, if they want to continue the RE series and bump off Wesker as the main villain (meaning, he'll die in RE5, oops), then it would be much more realistic to have a pre-existing character take over as the main villain than some new one.

Needless to say, I think it would be amazing if ended up being Sherry, and not just because I like her so much, but because it would be so twisted, considering how "innocent" she was in RE2.

There are still some people who are convinced Steve is stored away somewhere, via Wesker's apparent uber-revival skills, and if that ended up being true, it would totally mindfuck Claire to have both Sherry AND Steve "against" her. I mean, come on: regardless how fans feel about Sherry (and Steve), that really would be quite the story for RE6, if Claire lead that game. Ahh, but alas, I do not think that will be the case.

You know who'd be an AWESOME main-antagonist for the series? You know, an antagonist that's very smart and motivated, works behind the scenes, pulls strings, has knowledge of Umbrella and the T- and G-Viruses...you know who'd be AWESOME?!

William Birk -- !

....

...oh. Damn it.

Look at it this way: in Degeneration, it's already been 10 years and Claire has not once (that we know of) gone back for Sherry where ever she may be. Is Claire that heartless that she would loose track of her and not try to find her? After all, both Leon and Claire are directly responsible for the death of her parents (in the sense that without their interactions, at the very least, Sherry would still have Annette and she could have a somewhat normal life). I wonder if Sherry came up at all in that movie...

Anyway, if Claire is not all worried about her (Sherry would be about 22 now) then Sherry is probably OK. Or atleast ok up a bit before Degeneration starts/ends. Being a legal adult now, she's allowed her freedom and what not, but I'm sure she'd still keep in touch.

Given the second scenario; there's a good chance Sherry would want to join the anti-umbrella group so she'd be closer to her only remaining family and to perhaps exact her revenge on the company which caused all of the Raccoon City incident to happen in the first place? That could explain any martial arts she knows as she and the rest of the anti-umbrella movement would probably offer that as a part of a self defence class. If she was recently captured, then it would make sense to keep her in a comatose state. This could have gone on for days/weeks/months.

This could mean that Sherry is Tube Girl and also the Girl in the Red Dress. After she's released by Chris and Sheva, she could be taken to a safe place and dressed up in the only clean garment around, a red gown. She regains consciousness in the shanty room and freaks out and tries to escape! Given that she's been a comatose state for an extended period of time, this could have led to some atrophy of her muscles which would explain the way she moved in that trailer we saw. Then she see's a familar face in Chris from the anti-Umbrella group and calms down and goes back into the room (this could be the scene with Chris hold the girl in the red dress)...

Question really is, why was she taken in the first place. Was it for the a possible dormant g-virus/g-larva that is inside of her or for the anti-bodies she developed to the g-virus? If they needed to keep her alive, then chances are it was for the anti-bodies her body was able to produce...

If you think about it, if Claire really has not tried looking for Sherry and just doesnt care for her anymore, then Sherry could feel somewhat betrayed and has grown up to be a cold, non caring person herself. Which would explain the possibility of her being the next villain.

I think this is the most logical idea. The only thing that made me, and probably most of us, think that Sherry was Tube Girl/Red Dress girl, was the line in Wesker's Report, "There's something about this girl...", but now apparently it's been taken back? I don't remember, I read it somewhere around here. So if that's not true any longer, I don't know what the hell to think.

Tube Girl must be Sherry Birkin, it fits with the story plot. I don't really care if it is another character. I really hope Tube Girl and Birdwoman are the same person.

That was I was thinking, too. I mean, I definitely see Project Omega's point, but it seems to me that if Claire never even bothered to be concerned about what happened to Sherry (and Leon, too), Sherry would ultimately become quite the bitter person. She loved and adored Claire, and both Sherry and Claire's RE3 epilogues make a point to convey just how heartbroken Sherry is over Claire leaving.

And, like Project Omega wonder, I, too, am curious whether she is mentioned in Degeneration. But, I'm trying everything in my power to avoid all spoilers of the movie.

I have no idea why they would omit that. So many fans speculated over that single line for years, and while I can understand changing the story a little bit, it's almost ridiculous they would want to disregard that completely. But, I'm convinced it was just an editing mistake or something, because obviously Sherry has to have some sort of connection to Wesker if she's wandering around in RE5.

I know. I'm so very very alone in my love for Sherry. Then again, I was alone in my love for Ada a few years ago, but she gained massive popularity after appearing in RE4. The same will probably happen with Sherry, heh.

Ada's massive popularity seemed overrated and it is still weird for me nowadays.
